“Decor Seems Outdated, No A/C which equals musty smell and damp sheets!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 March 2012

I recently stayed in Room #001 Waikaloa which is a 1 bedroom in the building closest to the ocean. I would say the room does look like the pictures online so I did know about the decor. I would book again if it was just the decor but there were some other issues. First impression is musty smell. It is likely due to the fact there is no AC so too much moisture in the unit. There doesn't seem to be any sort of dehumidifier either. I opened all the windows and the smell either got better or we got used to it. However when I went to get into bed the sheets felt little damp which I think is gross. The unit does have a postcard view though. Plus the kitchen did have all that was needed. I am not sure there is much better in Hana but I would def. look around next time. Another issue that could be critical is that the tile on the outdoor patio is super slippery. I can't imagine why they haven't changed this.... it is such a hazzard right now. What if someone falls and breaks a hip? The room looked clean to me. I didn't notice any issues with that. I did hear noises from the people above us. Luckily I don't think they were loud... just thin walls/ceilings. Overall it's average place to stay and if I couldn't find better.... and I wanted to be in Hana... I would stay again. It would be nice if owners had boogie boards, CD player/radio, more entertainment things. I understand no TV but just seemed they could provide more.

Room Tip: Get room in building closest to ocean. Rooms do look like pics so pic accordingly. Top floor proba...

We spent two nights in room 105. As has been said in previous reviews, walls/ceilings are thin enough to hear other guest. The view is OK. Yes you can see the ocean and awesome black beach, however there is a giant green roof directly in front of the unit.

The bed is a foam mattress, which did nnot provide a comfortable nights sleep due to overheating by around 2 am.

When we pulled the sheets back the first night there was a pubic hair and small black seed in the middle of the bed. As well, there was a single cockroach hanging out on the ceiling. Didn't see any of his friends but I'm sure they're around. The bathtub wasn't cleaned.

The kitchen was absolutely beautiful. Nice stainless steel appliances, great stove, quartzstone countertop, 30" single basin sink. Well equipped, with tinfoil, saran wrap. If you leave food on the counter small ants will find it.

The room is quite dim at night.

Parking is kinda tough.

Be aware there is no TV.

Overall, it was overpriced for what you got.

Room Tip: If you decide to stay here, I would suggest you get one of the oceanfront rooms.

We visited just after they re-opened the Hana Highway in early March 2012.

We stayed in the "worst" condo in the place, and loved it! The partial ocean view was great, we had a perfect view of the sunrise both mornings. We had people all around us, and couldn't hear them at all.

Just before we left for Hawaii, the Hana Highway was closed. I called them, and they were busy just after a power failure. The lady on the line was honest. She told me that she didn't know if the road would re-open in time, but she would be in touch. She also gave me the number for the latest road information. If the road were still closed, they would have also refunded our deposit.

Well, a few hours later, the road re-opened, they called us to let us know.

We arrived, and the studio was great, full size appliances, plates, etc., everything we needed. It had one of those auxilliary fans that kept the temp perfect at night (we hate excessive heat and keep the AC below 70 at home -- but the ocean breeze and the fan was perfect. But of course, we were in the middle of paradise!)

Once we arrived, she told us what she knew, who was open, etc. We were soooo glad when we checked out -- she told us that Pranee, the lady who runs the Thai restaurant under the tent, was opening that morning. While the food at the nearby resort was very good, Pranee is a master chef.

Stayed just one night with another couple, our friends who live in Kihea. Our condo was comfortable, and gave us a good night rest and a great breakfast (if I do say so myself!) before we headed down to the Kipahulu area of Haleakala National Park, for a hike on the Pipiwai trail, through the bamboo forest to the beautiful waterfall.

The staff was helpful and efficient, and our condo was comfortable enough. For 2 couples splitting the cost, it was reasonably priced too.

We left a lovely peaceful condo in Lahaina in Maui to visit the other side of the Island and we stayed at the Hana Kai. We could have rented a cottage for $135, but thought we would pay the extra $255/nt in hopes of quality. We booked before we left Canada with our email address that was attached to our blackberry. They had flash floods and when we tried to access the Hana Kai we could not as the road was closed. We went back to town and had to ask around if there was an alternative route, luckily there was. Upon check in we asked why we had not been notified that the road was closed.......the response was ...."oh well we tried to email people, did you not get an email?" No we did not - holding up our blackberry -- our room was clean except there was mold in the ceiling in the bathroom. And this was our worst experience regarding accommodation for us for noise. They facility has reasonable quiet time (10pm-8am) but it really does not matter the walls and ceilings between the units are paper thin and you can hear everything that goes on above/beside you -- we were in unit 102 -- the people above us started dragging their chairs, back and forth, and walking back and forth at around 5:30am. That was just the start, then the housekeeping staff started talking right outside our door around 8am (the front door is a screened door with shutters on it)....not very quiet.

We did mention all of the above to the Manager and she said "Oh I am really sorry to hear that". But yet they have a journal in the bedroom and every 2nd or 3rd page says exactly what we have stated here.

This was a disappointment for the amount of money they charge.

They might be wise to invest in some insulation.

Every condo here is different, but the view from #4 is spectacular. This one-bedroom is on the corner of the front building, and it has a panoramic view of the crescent-shaped bay. We spent the day on the private balcony with a bottle of wine and snacks.

We visited a couple beaches around Hana, but we agreed none of them was a pretty as the view from our room.

So we stayed another night, moving to room #2. Another stunning view and plenty of privacy.

It's expensive here, naturally, but remember you are paying for the view. That said, make sure to book one of the oceanfront rooms, not one of those in the second building.

We took an overnight trip to Hana and its surrounds from Kapalua (6 hour drive each way with a few stops), and stayed at the Hana Kai Maui condos rather than the extremely expensive Travaasa resort. The service was good; accommodation comfortable; but condo furnishings were old and tired. At $250/night for a 1-bedroom unit, it seemed a little pricy.
