We stayed at the Hana Kai last year for 4nts and decided to stay again this year for 10nts. The condo's are really comfortable, especially the lanai which is very roomy to enjoy the tradewinds. This time around though we noticed that our housekeeping was not that great with the vacuuming and cleaning the floors. When walking around with socks we noticed they would be black and that's not dragging our feet. The staff is very friendly and it's a great location to everything.

This review is for Unit 206, which is owned independently from other condos at the Hana Kai Resort. The condo was clean and nicely decorated and extremely well outfitted with upscale furniture and appliances.

The unit was well stocked. To some extent we had seen that before at other vacation rentals, but never before to the level of detail at Hana Kai 206. There was body wash, shampoo and body lotion in the bath room, salad dressing, condiments and coffee in the fridge, and frosty mugs in the freezer waiting for a refreshing beer to be poured into them.

The resort itself is located in a beautiful bay overlooking the water. We never had any problems with noise or smoke as mentioned in a previous review, but as in the case in many condos in Hawaii, the windows only have shutters (no glass) so they would not close completely and the units are relatively close to each other, so this could be an issue if you had bad neighbors.

If you are looking for a place to stay in Hana - this is it!

Hana Kai 206 is a lovely, cozy condo on the Hana Bay. It was absolutely perfect! Exactly what we were looking for. It was a nice quiet, relaxing change from the hustle and bustle of the resort side of the island. The condo was in wonderful condition, clean, cute, absolutely terrific. I would recommend taking the road to Hana (a must do) and finish end at the condo. It's also very close to the rest of the Hana drive to the 7 Sacred Pools (another must-do).

We especially had a nice evening cooking dinner, drinking wine and playing board games (that are available at the condo). It was the relaxing "get away" I hoped for. I would definitely recommend it to anyone traveling to Maui and would also stay there again in a heartbeat!

We wanted to take the fabled "Road to Hana", but did not want to make the 3 hour drive twice in one day. We found the "Hana Kai 206" through the owner website "http://hanakai206.com". Mark and Shayla of the Hana Kai 206 sent us lots of tips on Hana, including what to bring, local attractions and more.

The Hana kai is a tidy condo with a world class view of a black sands beach where we watched the sun rise. The condo has a very efficient kitchen well equiped for meals, which suited us as we had tired of the (expensive) eating out.

We highly recommend the Hana Kai 206 to anyone who wants to see this lovely part of Maui. Our only regret was that we had but 2 nights there.

We stayed for 3 nights and our visit was ok. Since there is no air conditioning, everyone leaves their windows open so sound really travels from unit to unit. There are some sounds we would rather not hear..... There are house rules, but they do not seem to be enforced. Smoking is NOT prohibited on the lanais. However, we found that the majority of our neighbors ignored the house rules and smoked regardless. Quiet hours are from 8 am until 10 pm (I think), but again, our neighbors did not think this applied to them. We had no choice but to wake up at 6:30 am when the other folks did. Boisterous children made sure of that. The place has a nice view and BBQ area. It's an easy walk to the Hana Hotel which has good entertainment. The Thai roadside stand near the Hana Hotel has fabulous food. You can't go wrong. The roadside stand, owned by the local world class chef was a real disappointment. The food was not edible and we ended up tossing it out. It's on the south end of Hana. The pool was under construction, so there was quite a bit of noise from that in addition to all the other renos. We had gone in hope of a quiet, peaceful getaway, but that didn't quite happen for us. Before booking, check to see what construction activities are occuring and whether or not the non smoking policy applies, if that's important to you.

Thank you for your review. We have since posted no smoking signs on our lanais. All units are non-smoking (Hawaii State law). Our guests are required to sign our rules including quiet times and no smoking policy. There is a designated smoking area on the property and If an employee or resident manager is notified of guests smoking or excessive noise, we will intervene on behalf of our guests.

We ended a month-long Hawaiian vacation with four wonderful nights at Hana Kai 206, a second floor loft unit. The owners, Shayla and Mark, have put a lot of care, attention and love into the renovation and upkeep of this unit and it shows! It was a nice change to come to a rental condo that was clean and tastefully decorated. The reno was thorough and quality materials were used throughout (ex. dual Grohe showerhead, quality bath products & linens, granite countertops, bottom mount fridge, Sleep Number bed, iPod dock, portable DVD player, to name only a few). The kitchen was well-equipped (very important when staying in a remote location like Hana!) with such things as toaster oven, coffee grinder, espresso machine, new plates/cutlery, good knives, BBQ utensils, basic spices, wine & champagne glasses...there were even frosty mugs in the freezer! The dining table was on the nice-sized lanai, and we enjoyed every moment of gazing at Hana Bay.

The Hana area is quite lovely with a nice change from the arid south and west parts of Maui. We had been hiking nearly every day for a month and found our absolute favourite at The Pools of Oheo and Waimoku Falls, located in Haleakala National Park. On the way to Waimoku there were countless tide pools and it seemed like waterfall after waterfall, then a bamboo forest and finally the prize...400ft Waimoku Falls at the end. The north coast lava walks at Waianapanapa State Park were also great...we were treated to 20+ foot swells crashing into a beautiful, rugged coast (take the trail on the far side of the black sand beach), several blow holes & sea arches, a lava tube and caves. Hamoa and Koki beaches are among the best in the world...Koki has an especially beautiful view and is a great place to watch local surfers. Hamoa is shallow and a great place to body surf (watch the undertow, though).

Dealing with Shayla was great...she was efficient, professional and had a wealth of info re: what the area had to offer as well as details on the wonderful plate lunches that were sometimes available (no set business hours in Hana!).

Overall, this was our favourite place and our only regret is that we did not stay for a week!

When you’ve driven the road to Hana, you know you’ve driven somewhere. I’m not talkin’ ridin’ in a tour bus, I mean wrangling the wheel yourself… through literally hundreds of hair pin turns, while waiting your turn to cross a dozen hair raising bridges narrow enough for only one car, one way.

I didn’t know that I’d need a place to rest when I got to the Hana end. But a wise friend of mine did, and she contacted Shayla Middleton, the private owner of the separately rentable Room 206 at the Hana Kai Resort, and made the arrangements for me. Now that I’ve stayed there, I’m ready to make that drive again! Forget the Seven Pools, simply luxuriating in this condo is worth the repeat trip.

The delights are in the details, and Room 206 is rich with attention to design and detail. This isn't a cookie cutter condo... this place is tastefully hand done with a distinct styling that exudes class and is marvelous to look at and touch.

Like the carved natural stone sink in the bathroom... you just want to hug it, as if it was an artifact unearthed from ancient Polynesia. To the left of this sink is a small pile of stones interleaved with face towels. So natural. Huge textured travertine tiles coat the bathroom floor and walls, trimmed with a band of random natural rocks that wraps around the shower, all lit by amazing looking light fixtures.

The river of travertine tiles also flows from the entry into the well-appointed kitchen, that sports every appliance convenience you can think of... from built in automatic dishwasher (in the binder of instructions the owner states that Room 206 is the only condo at the Hana Kai that even has a dishwasher) to espresso maker to toaster oven (mounted on a stone/bamboo countertop extension) to smoothie blender to oven/range/microwave to cooking gadgets only seen on late night TV. If it is made for a kitchen, you will likely find it in one of the cabinets... where every shelf and drawer is fully labeled as to what goes where.

On the subject of gadgets and conveniences, I noticed that there was high speed internet access, cat 5 cabling, cordless telephone, digital answering machine, digital music system, DVD player, along with a library of recent DVD movies. I didn't use any of that stuff... as I was escaping electronic social tethers, but for those that need a fix, this place has got the hook up.

The high tech gee-wizardry continues up the rope-tied, bamboo railed and treaded stairway.. into the bamboo floored and wainscoted bedroom loft... hidden beneath the soft fluffy linens that are tucked between big tubes of bamboo headboard... in the form of a Select Comfort Sleep Number electronically adjustable bed. This bed has two remote controls that finely adjust the firmness/softness of each side of the bed... independently. Instead of hard metal coils for mattress springs, this bed uses individually segregated air chambers designed to relieve back pain while sleeping.

Oh, and did I mention bamboo? The outdoor natural environs of a tropical Hawaiian paradise permeates seamlessly inside of this condo. Real bamboo is everywhere... on the door and window trim, across the vaulted cathedral high ceiling, and even in the artistic and unique furniture pieces that conceal other recurring condo themes of Hawaiian nature as well, like turtles. There is a natural essence to this place… a feeling harkening back to a Polynesian thatched hut… only spotless clean, with all the modern conveniences.

The tropical outdoors is also brought indoors magnificently in the original artwork hanging on the walls. Throughout the condo there are beautiful canvases of Maui waterfalls, geckos, flora, beaches… but the piece d’resistance has to be the humongous (who knows how many feet wide?) canvas of a Hawaiian beach scene that spans the entire living room lengthwise.

Find your way out of this huge canvas, and the eye is greeted to the real thing… the sound of waves and the sights of the black sand beach being lasciviously licked by the ocean… all seen from the comfort of big basket chairs perched on the lanai (the outdoor balcony porch).

The lanai of Room 206 is situated on the second floor of the Hana Kai complex. Being on the second floor not only affords the advantage of higher, airy ceilings inside the condo… it offers much better views outside. I can only assume that the folks who get stuck in first floor condos might try to escape from their lower indoor ceilings by taking refuge out on their lanais, only to be stuck again staring at the wall of the building in front of them. Room 206 can see over the top of that other building, and thus one can directly see the sunrise kiss the sky from behind the horizon without ever leaving the room.

Since Room 206 at the Hana Kai is rented privately, separate from the front desk program, there is an additional layer of personal protection and privacy that I like. You can come and go like you owned the place, and no one there is the wiser. No 9 AM harassment from housekeeping. No itinerant front desk staff perusing the personal information in your check-in records. No guest services calls bugging you to see if "everything is ok." Of course everything is OK. Being ensconced in a beautiful bamboo basket of a condo overlooking the black sand beach of Hana Maui... how could it NOT be OK? With no such threat of visitors, Room 206 is the perfectly private place to enjoy a prolonged, intimate, and varietal course of honeymooner's salad... lettuce alone, without the dressing!

After surviving the road to Hana, get your kicks in Room 206.
