We considered taking the road to Hana tour or driving it, read all the reviews we could find and finally decided to take a tour. We chose Valley Isle Tours and they were wonderful. The driver Pu was articulate and entertaining, she gave us many brief history and cultural lessons as we went along during the day. We found the tour both fun and worthwhile since driving yourself would mean one person would not enjoy the scenery. having a local guide also gave us a bit more history. we were never rushed or "herded" as sometimes happens on tours. Lunch was good and the afternoon full of sites to see including a stop to swim at the seven sacred pools. Would recommend this tour.

We didn't do a tour group trip, but rather set out ourselves in our rented Sebring convertible. Even thought the road is only about 60 miles roundtrip from Paia? to Hana, plan to take all day. Great sidetrips along the way and crazy driving (not for the easily car-sick!) Beautiful, beautiful scenery, can't say enough about it. Visit the gallery in Hana before heading back (we ended up with a wonderful painting being shipped back to us....)

Everyone-do yourselves a favor- and ignore any talk that you can't drive a car (even a rental car) around the whole island. DO NOT TURN AROUND AT HANA and endure the pain of having to go back the way you came. The part after Hana is the most beautiful stretch of highway I have ever seen and I am hard to please. ;o). The sunset was so beautiful that you forget how you had to almost run over 2 kids to attempt to see the Blue Pool and how you spit your partially boiled hot dog out in your hand in front of a native cleaning his teeth in Hana.
Drive quickly through the first half of the Hana trip and don't waste your time seeing any of the waterfalls. They are dry and not worth the bug bites. The trails that "Maui Revealed" (written almost 5 years ago) don't exist. The "gems" are now blocked by local signs, angry natives, and kids with sticks. Just drive on through!
Ask me any questions because if I save at least one person the disappointment- my trip would be worth it.

Im sure everyone writes about Road to Hana being a BEAUTIFUL drive. They are right. Just to make it short, Ill give the highlights of the trip
we followed Frommers guide to Road to Hana for most part.
The waterfalls (twin falls and a few ones on the road) were not very impressive for swimming.
The fruit and smoothie stands..........WOW... Be sure to ask them about the absolutely native hawaiian fruits to get the best experience. Many of the small stands also offer tasting..Isnt that amazing (custard apples, rubatans, longans, passion fruits)
Be sure to visit Keane peninsula... It is really very picturesque. If you have packed your lunch. Its a nice place for a tiny personal picnic. Try not to irk the locals though. If there is too much crowd already, just pass by.
We brought really nice pearls from this local lady. We were also grateful to another nice lady for trying to show us Opihe.
Be sure to continue from hana to Oheo gulch. Now thats a perfect swimming place. We continued on the partial unpaved road and got back to Kahului from the other side of Hana. It was the best decision!!!! Its a slightly rocky road in the begining (around 1 hour, and about 6 miles)...But, if you want to experience serenity... This is it!!Spectacular sights. No sounds except the light russle of the waves and wind. There is nothing till as far as you can see. Just barren land and the sea (and a few cows..., so drive safe). We were here around sunset and the memories of that moment will never fade. We just found our happy place on this planet.
