“A Slice of Paradise”
Reviewed 22 October 2016 for a stay in October 2016

The cottage is unique and clean. We felt welcome and comfortable on the property. There is a view of the flora and fowl from the entire cottage. We also enjoyed the skylight that brought light into the common area....quite refreshing as a lot of Hana seems to be rather shady. There is wifi and plenty of reading material. We loved the geckos, but did not see many other critters inside the cottage. We would come back again, no question. We loved it!

“Highly recommend for an escape to Hana”
Reviewed 4 September 2016 for a stay in July 2016

We stayed for 3 nights, in between 5N in Oahu and 6N in Ka'anapali, both at fabulous Marriott timeshare resorts. We wanted to enjoy the natural wonders / beauty on this end of the island. This cottage is a perfect location, 5-15 minutes from Black Sand Beach, Hana, Hamoa Beach, & 40 min from Pipiwai Trail / O'heo Gulch. Appreciated the two twin beds in 2nd bedroom (many rentals had a double or queen, not good with 13 & 15 yr old sons). There was no a/c but nice ceiling fans and generally a breeze. It got a little stuffy for just a few hours one evening and we pulled out the floor fan we found in closet (recommend adding a 2nd one for the other bedroom). Loved the unique, open, octagon floor plan with bedrooms off the side.

Andrew and his lovely wife were very nice and easy to communicate with during the booking process and in person. The grounds were very private and incredibly lush. We will definitely stay here again if we return to Hana. Wish we had stayed on more night.

The only reason for the 4 stars was the ants - they were out of control in the kitchen. You had to be really careful about setting things down. I put a stick of marg on the counter to get ready to butter btm of fry pan, while I made pancake batter, and when I turned back around a bit later the stick was covered in ants and I had to toss it. I didn't notice the book on the table with info from owners til 3rd day and it did say put all food in frig, even stuff that doesn't need to be. They should probably make that clear up front. I figured it out the hard way.

Oh, one other comment, Hana closes up really early so plan well or you might not eat! General/grocery stores closed at 7/7:30, most food stands mid afternoon, & 1 of the only restaurants was closed while we were there,..

War with ants is a permanent feature of living in Hana. Fortunately most tribes are tiny and don't bite, and we manage to keep most of the pesky things out. But in wet periods and cyclically at a few times of the year more sometimes get through our defences. This guest is right that it helps a lot if all food is put away, in the fridge is best even if it doesn't need refrigerating, as the ants' scouts can detect something they might like at a great distance (for an ant). The battle continues...

“Perfect Retreat ”
Reviewed 24 July 2016 for a stay in July 2016

After five days in the crowds of West Maui my family and I were ready for some rest and relaxation in the rainforest. We certainly found it at Kolea Cottage. The house is surrounded by an abundance of fruit trees and jungle vegetation that give you a sense of real isolation, even though it is only a few minutes drive to Hana town. We were grateful to find a washer and dryer with detergent as well as a fully furnished kitchen after days of being crammed in a hotel. My kids were enchanted by the geckos that gather on the window screens in the evening, and which occasionally chirp. The beds were cozy and soft, the perfect place to fall asleep after a day of hiking or swimming in East Maui. This house is very convenient to the Black Sand Beach, Pipiwai Trail, Hamoa Beach, Hana Bay, etc... Owners provided perfect directions as well as advice on shopping and dining. This place is heavenly!

“Clean comfortable place with a great center room”
Reviewed 17 July 2016 for a stay in June 2016

This is a single family residence that is set out on a side road outside of Hana. We arrived at the start time to occupy(3:00?, which I thought was sort of late since it's not a hotel with a lot of rooms to clean). Upon entering the property, much to my surprise considering the hour, we saw a guy up on the roof using a power blower, obviously blowing "stuff" off the roof, some of which fell on the stairway leading up to the front door. I received assurance from this fellow (not the owner) that he would remove the debris from the stairway so we would not track it into the house. I was a little annoyed that there was no soap or shampoo available. The place is pretty removed from other homes on the side street. So, it was nice and quiet It is quite dark to the entry of the property at night. Just be careful. The beds and chairs were all comfortable. It is basic and the $368 charge was high in my opinion for what we got. Get it at a cheaper price, and you will be more satisfied.

Liked best: the center room so my family members could all gather together comfortably
Liked least: I thought the price charged was rather steep esp when I saw it upon our return for $100 less

John was here for a single night, which is regrettably more expensive than a longer stay for us as well as guests. In fact most of the rentals in East Maui seem not to accept single night guests at all.
Apologies that a guy was just finishing up his work blowing stuff off the roof when John arrived sharp at 3.00. We have to maintain the outside of the house when the weather allows. As demanded, he did of course clear up before he left.
Not being a hotel, as John notes, we do not provide shampoo, conditioner, bath caps and the other clutter of modern hotel bathrooms. We do however provide liquid soap on two sinks and on the bath tub. I don't believe that these were missing, but perhaps John was looking for cakes of soap.
If guests advise us they may arrive late, and often even if they don't, we make sure to leave welcoming lights on. Guests who go out for dinner are advised to leave lights on to light their way on returning.
Sorry, John that you were so unhappy as to grant us just three out of five. We try very hard to make everything nice for our guests, and we feel it does seem a bit mean on the basis of the reasons given. Incidentally, we regularly check that our prices are reasonable relative to the market. Sadly Hana is not a cheap place to run a business, as anyone filling up with gas at our local station will readily understand.

“Fantastic!”
Reviewed 6 July 2016 for a stay in June 2016

Unique home that is really well designed, comfortable, and private. Great room (kitchen, dining, living area and 2 desks) was really comfortable and a fantastic community area for our family. Hosts thought of nearly everything. Really appreciated the nice pans and kitchen tools, laundry detergent and more. They were honest about the bugs - but it was fun to watch the geckos. Only things missing - BBQ and air conditioning. The fruit left for us was really tasty. This was a perfect vacation get away.

“Peaceful Hana charm”

Had a wonderful stay in Hana. My 4 year old loved walking the grounds and playing on the large porch. the cottage was a bit stuffy when we arrived at 3pm, but soon cooled down and the breezes made it very pleasant overnight. I liked how beach towels and other basic amenities provided. The privacy makes you feel right at home! My son especially liked watching the small geckos looking for bugs on the porch at dusk. Mosquitos were surprisingly few (maybe because of our outdoor gecko friends). Inside was spacious. The owner came by and checked in around the end of our stay. Very nice people. We hate that we had to cancel a tour of the fruit trees that Andrew agreed to give my son. Andrew, I enjoyed your travel book immensely!. Mahalo! We definitely recommend this place to lucky Hana travelers. Our stay was only 2 nights, but Hana has enough sites for twice that if you so choose. We visited several beaches, lava tubes, botanical gardens and the wonderful folks at Hana Health when my son fell on the stairs of Hamoa Beach. 2 nights was perfect for us.

“The perfect place to stay in Hana”

What a specrtaular place to stay. We arrived weary from the drive and a day full,of exploring. The house is beautiful and well equipped . Coffe on the porch the next morning watching the sun rise was a great start to the day. I wish we had discovered the orchard behind the house before we were leaving..

No need to do the Hana trip in one day when you could stay here.
