“Overpriced, average food”
Reviewed 26 March 2014 via mobile

The food here is very expensive, even by DC standards so it's really overpriced for a small place like Hana - $48 for a fish entree. Add a salad, wine and dessert and a meal here will make a big dent in your pocketbook. Now, I don't mind paying for really good food, but the food at this place doesn't come close. Both my husband and I had the local fish, which was well-cooked, but it was combined with mismatched accompaniments. The fish was plated over bok choy and a brown rice, but was topped with an avocado, olive salsa. The parts didn't seem to go together. Also, the rice was not fully cooked. Parts of the rice were fine, and other parts were crunchy and raw. How hard is it to cook rice - for $48 you would think they would make sure the rice was cooked correctly. Definitely not worth the price. We had more satisfying, less expensive meals at the smaller places in the area.

“Quite a shocker”
Reviewed 6 March 2014

When booking Valentine's Dinner, no mention was made of the dinner being fixed course & price. Imagine our surprise to learn the meal would cost $100 per person (not including tax & gratuity). We had already opened a bottle of wine in the bar b/4 dinner & with reservations impossible to make elsewhere in Hana, so late, were rather stuck with our reservation. Compounding that, the first coarse was raw seafood, which we didn't eat. When the bill came, gratuity was already added (18%) and our bill came to $280.00!!
Just think it was rather sneaky not to let us know of the fixed course/price at the time of booking!

“Good Food, Overpriced as Expected”
Reviewed 3 March 2014

We were staying at the Hana Kai, but decided to try out Travaasa's restaurant. The food was good and the ambiance was nice. Portions were small and prices were high - but we expected that going in. The highlight of the meal was sitting at the table next to Steven Tyler, not the food. Service was on the slow side.

“Good But Should be Better, Especially for the Price.”
Reviewed 2 March 2014

Our party decided to venture out for a special dining experience during our last night staying in gorgeous Kipahulu so we booked the dining room at the new Travaasa Hotel Hana. In the end we were a bit disappointed. The chef and cuisine are on the right track, but the execution was a bit lacking. The staff is not well enough trained or otherwise up for the task of high end dining, although they try their best and have the best intentions. The menu prices are stratospheric, the food is good but by no means worth the high prices. The waiter was sweet and helpful but way overworked and the kitchen wasn't up to the task of serving only a 1/2 full restaurant. My Caesar Salad arrived without a single anchovy even though I asked for extra. The waiter went back to the kitchen only to learn for the first time that they were out of anchovies. All he could do was politely apologize. Some of our dishes were quite good and others were just mediocre. I understand that Hana is way off the beaten path but hopefully they can improve over time and raise the bar at this restaurant or at least lower their prices.

“Poor quality and over priced”
Reviewed 2 March 2014 via mobile

How can a place make such a bad burger? First, when you see a burger is $20, it better be damn good. When it came out, the patty was a good 30% smaller than the bun. Red flag. It was flavorless and lousy, as was the small portion of fries. I wanted to send it back, but we were traveling through the area and wanted to get moving. My girl friends tacos were equally disappointing. Bar food is far superior to this. If you just need something in your stomach because you are starving, stop here. Otherwise, keep driving.
