“Not much to see for $20”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

If you are short on time on the road to Hanna I would save the time and money. It has an ancient temple ruin which is cool and a native thatch hut but the views are just as good for free on the beaches during the drive

“off the road to Hana...”
Reviewed 20 June 2014

Nice little find off of the road to Hana. Not a long side trip, maybe 2 miles off the main road but well worth the trip. We have been through many of the caves in the eastern part of the country, especially here in Pa., but have never been handed a flashlight and turned loose by the attendant. A definate plus!! Not a strenuous walk but the rocks do get slippery so be prepared. Family members with walking or balance issues probably want to stay behind because the floor of the tube is very uneven and the roof does slope in places. Lots of fun.

Aloha, this review is for the Lava Cave Tour, not Kahanu Garden. We have no caves at Kahanu Garden.

“Hostile staff”
Reviewed 20 June 2014

Breadfruit is a intriguing food crop with a fascinating history (read about the Mutiny on the Bounty, for example) so we were excited to visit the world's largest repository of breadfruit varieties, but somehow on the day were were there the place was closed... ok well we'll just look around and not bother anyone - but a lady in a van was parked there for hours with nothing to do except tell people to leave or she'd call the police. (If she really had to be there anyway, she couldn't have shown people around and collected entrance fees?)

She then proceeded to tell us that you can't bring breadfruit trees back to the US mainland (they have to be properly prepared and inspected, but you certainly can), that there are no breadfruit trees anywhere on the island except on private property (excuse me, the road past Hana is littered with them) and basically tried to turn our interest into negativity. Too bad, I was hoping to make a significant donation to the Gardens... well that's not going to happen. Hopefully others can visit when the Dragon Lady isn't there.

Thank you for your review. Sorry we were not open on the day of your visit. I am sure the woman you had the misfortune of meeting at our gate was not on our staff. Our three visitor program assistants are trained to share the history of the area and information of our many plant collections with aloha to our many visitors. Our breadfruit collection is one of the largest in the world, with over 127 different varieties and over 250 trees, some of them 25 years old and 30' - 40' tall. Our Breadfruit Institute has shipped over 40,000 young trees to 27 different countries as part of our "help feed the world" program. We hope you will be able to visit our beautiful Garden again when we are open.

“Not our Fave”
Reviewed 4 June 2014

With all the options on the road to Hana, this was, well, OK. Always happy to support but to pay $10 to see not nearly as cool of sites as many of the free options, well, again, not our fave. The grounds are nice and if you go toward the beach and to the right there are some cool sites.
