We spent a few nights at the 'Hideaway' suite a few weeks ago. I agree, the suite was a little too close to the road...very noisy at times, and the hot water situation was pretty bad. We were lucky to even have 1 min of hot water each morning! Besides all this though, fairly cosy room and no trouble with bugs. Owner was very nice.

My wife and I spent four days there during our honeymoon, amongst some of the other Hawaiian islands, and we were sorely disappointed.

So here's the scoop. The east island rains constantly, whereas the west (around Lahaina) remains almost too warm, but sunny nonetheless. The rain is a constant blight: bugs abound, and because there's no air conditioning in this hotel, despite charging $400+ a night, you'll get eaten every day.

The staff service is variable, the beaches are very rough, and we found ourselves driving long distances on unmade roads every day just to find something to do where it wasn't raining.

Overall, if we were to stay again in Hawaii, we would have a longer trip in Kauai and leave Maui for the tourists. If you're not here on your honeymoon, then maybe the west coast would be great fun - Key-West style - for a few days.

I stayed in the Hana Accomadations and Plantation Houses "Hideaway" room. The room itself was ok but quite dusty with lots of cobwebs. The worst thing about this place was that we had literally 3 minutes of hot water each day. We were forced to take sponge baths with water heated in the coffee maker. Their web site said it had a full bath- which it does except that the tub cannot be stopped up so it's really just a shower. There was never anyone in the office when we tried to tell them about the problem. The hot tub has sooo much chlorine in it that it was unpleasant- especially since we couldn't wash it off afetrwards without freezing. The owners warn you about mosquitoes, but when you lock the door to the unit (using a padlock!) there is a large 1" wide crack where the screen cannot close. The web site said the unit had a queen size bed, but it was a full size mattress on a queensize platform. There was suposed to be a binder in the room with information about restauants and other things to do and see in the area. When we couldn't find it the person in the office (we only saw them once when we arrived and they left shorty afterwards) just shrugged her shoulders and told us it must be in the room - no help what so ever. There was no phone in the room and there is barely any cell phone service on that side of the island so it was impossible to get any information without driving into town and finding someone to ask. I felt like she didn't like tourists and wanted to make our stay as unpleasant as possible- not good when you are renting out accomadations to people.

The first thing we noticed is the banana tree in our front yard! We immediately knew this was a place of relaxation. Across the street is a path & beautiful rocks & ocean which was great. If you truly want to 'get away from it all' - this is definitely the place to go!

We stayed in a 3 bedroom house on the property just outside of Hana for 2 nights. You can't beat the rates! The property is directly across the street from the Venus Pool, a beautiful stream fed pool that leads to the ocean. The host is friendly and helpful and left us to our own devices for our stay. The house could use some updating in the way of living room furniture, but the bedrooms and beds were quite nice. Night time brought many geckos inside to catch flies which was fun to watch!
I would recommend spending at least one night in Hana mainly because there are many sights you can see first thing in the morning before the parade of cars arrive from the other side of the island. Also, I think it would be difficult to find a more beautiful sunrise in Maui or a more quiet evening. Make an effort to see Hamoa beach, the Pools at Oheo and the Red Sand Beach (unforgettable, but a difficult and precarious path). Keep in mind that Hana is on the wet side of Maui, though our stay was sunny and perfect.

Sat in the hot tub at night star gazing! Very nice relaxing atmosphere.
WOuld highly recomend staying the night in Hana to anyone going to Maui....you can then be the first to the sacred pools and have them all to yourselves before everyone else taking the road to hana!

For someone like me that leads a busy life -- a stay at the Hana Plantation Houses was what I needed. There's nothing here, except a well-appointed house and a spa. Close to the ocean, and all the privacy you need. The staff was quite friendly and very hospitable. There's no real 'services' to speak of, and that's the charm, it's a make-it-yourself vacation. Trust me, if you're busy, then you need to go to Hana.
