Hana Maui Boatanical Gardens at Kaia Ranch is a very beautiful place. JoLoyce and her late husband purchased 27 acres 30 years ago and built a beautiful Hawaiian botanical garden that is open 24/7 for guests (very close down the road is also the famous National Hawaiian Kahanu Gardens). You can wander the gardens, pick fruit and enjoy the beauty at your leisure. A local named Marco offers informal tours of the garden from a stand at the entrance. He will teach you to open coconuts and how to gather the fruits of the garden. The two units are rustic in a local Hawaiian way. If you want resort accomodations the Hana Maui Resort is much better and $800 or more per night. The units have a gas refridgerator and stove. The electricity comes from solar, batteries and a generator when needed. The units are clean but not perfect in a natural sort of way that requires tolerance of the natural world that many people have lost in our modern world.
JoLoyce and her caretaker Adam are very friendly and knowledgeable about Hana and the true Hawaii. I have travelled to Hawaii over 70 times in 30 years and lived in Kauai for several summers running an eco camp. Your experience here will put you in touch with the real Hawaii. But remember, the natural world mixes extreme beauty and pleasure with inconveniences.
