Came here for dinner on Dec. 19 upon a recommendation. The restaurant was busy and we didn't have a reservation so we didn't complain about the lousy table and the lackluster service. Our table was near the sushi bar and we were entertained by the sushi chef, who was definitely strung out on something, trying to keep it together.

The food was another matter. I ordered a salad, and the plate that was placed in front of me 30 minutes after ordering looked like something I'd throw in my compost pile at home -- wilted greens edged with brown. Totally unappetizing and really no excuse for this in Maui, where salad greens are grown. Our entrees were lukewarm and under seasoned. When we relayed our experience to the person who recommended it he was surprised as he felt it was consistently good. However, based on the meal we had, I'd say go somewhere else if you can.

The food was good and service was excellent. Make a reservation if you want to eat post-sunset. We went on a Thursday and were disappointed that the raw bar was not open but we had good sushi. We went again on a Sunday when the raw bar was open (but there were no oysters available!) and the sushi bar was closed. I guess to get both sushi and ceviche/oysters you have to go on Friday or Saturday. It would have helped if that information was more clear.

Our first attempt without a reservation was unsuccessful so we booked for NY Eve -got a 5:30 time slot ehich suited us as we had a toddler in our group. Service was very efficient, staff pleasant, food good, price quite reasonable. The vegetable appetiser was delicious - I should have had ths for myself as a main. As a vegetarian there was limited choices but that is not uncommon in most restaurants. Everyone else in our group enjoyed their meals. it was very busy and maybe felt a little rushed - so not what I'd call a romantic or quiet setting if that's what you are looking for. However it was NY so generally a busy time anywhere.

Our large group tumbled into Cafe O'lei on Christmas Eve, with a late reservation, as the restaurant was starting to wind down. Even though the staff had a big day under their belts, they rose to the occasion and delivered a fun and festive night that we all enjoyed.

The layout of the restaurant has an open and community like feel to it. The bar commands the middle of the space and there is a separate sushi bar/counter in the back.

The menu had the full range of seafood options, along with local fare, and then the separate sushi menu. They run two kitchens there, the regular one and sushi, and they did a great job coordinating the two. The wine list was solid, the seafood fantastic. Drinks were on time and the service was very attentive.

We are big fans of Mama's Fish House, Nick's Fishmarket, etc, but those places charge nearly 3x what dinner at Cafe O'lei cost us, and the difference wasn't nearly that large. This is a great place to change it up a bit if you want to get out of the mega resorts.

The night capped off with the staff juding our Hawaiian shirt contest and sharing a laugh with us as we wrapped up Christmas Eve. A great night!

Very very noisy restaurant located on the 2nd floor of a run down shopping center. The food was decent, but just way too much noise with no elbow room. Not our taste and would not return.
