“You're not likely to be disappointed with choosing this property”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 January 2014

The only way you're likely to be disappointed with this property is if you crave the mega action resort type of trip. If you've been to and prefer Lahaina and the likes of the mega hotels and condos, with the associated zoo like atmosphere, then don't choose this property. Otherwise if you want a laid back and more traditional Hawaiian atmosphere where the units are very good, the views incredible, the location great, the staff very helpful and the fellow travelers very friendly, then book one of the Maalaea Surf Resort condos. Each condo is different, we stayed in G8 for 1 week. The only negatives of the unit are it is a little dated and could use a refresh, particularly in the bathrooms. While the staff do a very good job keeping everything very clean, the unit probably hasn't been refreshed for a good 20 years or so. I typically like modern units (granite, stainless steel etc) but still found this unit "good enough" considering all the other very large positives of the MSR property. It's very easy to see why people come back to these condos over and over again through the years and decades. As much as I prefer trying new places, it's going to be hard to not choose MSR again when on Maui.
Pros:
Really well stocked kitchen
Boogie boards and beach stuff for the kids
Cleanliness
Location (on the beach), location (central in Kihei) location (small but great farmers market and other shops)
Pools, tennis courts, shuffleboard
Very helpful staff - new linens/towels and cleaning every 2 days during the week
Community feel - very easy to get to know the fellow guests, come on out for the sunset conch blowing celebration!
Cons:
G8 is due for a refresh, particularly the bathrooms. If this is a big deal for you, choose one of the other units that have recently been remodeled. Each are individually owned but most are managed by the owner's association.

Room Tip: Book early because the really good units go fast.

We just had our second stay at the Maalaea Surf Resort and I don't think that we will stay any where else on Maui from now on. It is the perfect central location to get to other parts of the island. We've stayed in Kaanapali many times and liked it but you can't beat a beach or oceanfront condo at the Maalaea Surf. It has a real feeling of old Hawaii with the Tahitian style condos, lots of lawn and palm trees, beautiful landscaping and beautifully appointed condos. Even if you stay in the ocean front condos, you get a very close feeling to the ocean. The beachfront are right within steps of the beach where as the ocean front are back but still facing the ocean. The beach is not crowded and you can walk in either direction for miles. Within a 5 minute walk, there is a small ABC store, Hawaiian Shave Ice, a delicious bakery with freshly baked quiches, muffins, etc., a small boutique with wonderful things to take home and a little farmer's market. We will be back next year!

Room Tip: From what we could see from walking around, they are all good. It just depends on how close you wan...

Aloha!
We've been coming to the Maalaea Surf Resort since 1987 and it is a timeless spot that has never disappointed nor changed it's blissful environment. Whatever happens, as the decades have passed, nothing has lost its charm or beauty. The units can be very different depending on each owner, as they reflect the taste of the owner. Generally you will notice the rooms are taken very good care of and seem to have been renovated over the past few years. Generally as a tip, the lanai units are beautiful and if you can squeeze into these lower units directly by the ocean with 3 people to save costs on an extra bedroom, they are absolutely worth the extra price you pay for the view. Works great with small children. If you need more space for 4-5 people the upper floors are ideal with bedrooms on 2 floors and a balcony.

Tip: If you book directly with the resort you will get very well taken care of units and the maid service is very friendly. If you have issues, the staff at the reception is very attentive. If you book with other agents not related to the resort, you will be disappointed. Although prices may be lower, rooms are not renovated, there is no maid service and generally the agents will not offer to help other than charging your credit cards. Your stay will come with disappointments, and there is nothing the reception can do to help, as these units are not run by the resort.

My personal favorite is the D-building and H-buildling. You will not be disappointed if you stay here. Whoever you meet at the resort, you can be sure that they either return year after year or if they are first timers, they'll be making arrangements to return to the beautiful island of Maui at some point in the future.

The island has many things to offer. Kihei is great for food, surfing, shopping, and catching a trip out to Molokini for snorkeling. Lahaina is great for a special night out with dinner while the sun sets. Catch a luau at Lahaina for a very nice Hawaiian experience. If you like to Mini Golf - close by Maalaea harbour you'll find a little place with a sculpted volcano - that's it! Fun course for kids and adults. Of course the real golf courses are available too all over the island. Wailea is great to catch a 18 hole course. Locals get great discounts, so make friends with the locals and they can show you some great spots. The Road to Hana is a wonderful day trip - a long 8 hour car ride - but totally worth it, as the pools are breathtaking to swim in. Make sure you grab the CD guide along the road to Hana at a local kiosk!

There are much more places to explore. It's difficult to write down all. If you get the chance to come to Maui you will not regret it. Maalaea Surf has been more than a home away from home! :)

Room Tip: The D-building is the best stay we've had directly set by the ocean. Definitely romantic for cou...

One of the best places we have ever stayed! We are repeat guests in G10. It has an amazing view of the pool and the ocean. The setting is beautiful, inside there a flat screen TV and beautiful furniture. My wife and our three boys come here every year!

H2 is on the ground floor - nowhere in Maui have we experienced the ability to walk out on the lanai to grass - sand - and then ocean. Spectacular setting and a wonderful unit. Very well appointed (if you enjoy eating in, you'll find the kitchen has every gadget you can think of) The bed is very comfortable and the shower/half-bath was appreciated. Extremely private and relaxing, we loved everything offered at the Maalaea Surf. View, accommodation, location, all 5 stars! A fabulous spot.

Usually when you stay at a condo, the first thing you need to do is a shopping list. There are rarely spices, paper products, garbage bags, etc. This condo was perfectly outfitted. I mean everything! Including sharp knives. The bed was delicious. Even the sleeper sofa was very comfortable for our teenage daughter. Plenty of linens, paper products, beach towels. There was a closet stocked with beach gear: chairs, umbrella, boogie boards, even sand toys for a little one. Refrigerator with an ice maker.

The condo had been recently remodeled with nice floors, great furniture, even a large, flat screen TV. Great internet service both wireless and connected.

The outdoor furniture was very comfortable. I think this unit has the nicest lounge chairs covered with thick cushions.

If there is a downside, this condo faces the small pool. It was a child magnet all day long. We did not enjoy hang around time outdoors because of it. In fact, we would walk to the big pool and lounge around there just for peace and quiet. I simply don't understand going all the way to Hawaii to hang around a tiny pool (can you say beach day, parents?) But we were rarely at the condo by day because there is so much to do on Maui.

The grounds are beautiful, and I understand from talking with the new property manager, they will get even better. Very nice, well maintained barbeques.

Each building has a laundry room. I used the one in building C three times; it was clean and functional.

Loved the location, too. Easy, short drive from the airport. About 1/4 mile down the street is an excellent farmer's market, ABC store, and the best shave ice I've ever enjoyed, Ululani's.

I wish I were still there. I plan to return!

Room Tip: Some of the condos have not been upgraded recently and that will affect your stay. Be sure to ask f...

Stayed 2 weeks over Christmas and New Years in a beach front unit on the lower level. The unit itself is dated but it is clean and the beds are comfortable. We have all the comforts of home and a million dollar view. The kids have grass to run around on and the beach is steps away. We have seen turtle and whales plus the most amazing sunsets from our lanai. After visiting some of the resorts up in kaanapali which are busy and loud and crowded we love coming back to our quiet little resort. Never hard to find space on the beach or a deck chair at the pool. Walking distance to a farmers market and the Kiehi canoe club. Both are worth a visit. When booking, pay close attention to the lanai furniture. The more comfortable the better...you'll be spending a lot of time there! I can handle the dated interior of the condo when you consider what this resort has to offer! Donuts offered poolside on Friday mornings and a pupu party on New Year's Eve.
