“Great Home-Away-From-Home, Right on the Beach!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 August 2014

The Ma'alaea Surf Resort is a beautiful, well maintained set of condo's right on Sugar Beach, in north Kihei. No matter which unit you rent, you'll have a great view, and are only steps from the beach. We truly felt like this was our home during our 12 days on Maui.

We stayed in unit E4, a 2/2 on the first floor. We (family of 6) were overall very happy with this unit. It was very clean and well stocked. The furnishings and decor were very nice & up-to-date, but the kitchen and baths are dated and (in our opinion) in need of an overhaul. The king bed in the master was comfortable. The twins in the second bedroom were about as comfortable as the tile floor. The living room sofa bed was very comfortable - the kids were fighting over it - trading nights on the comfy sofa & stiff twin beds.

The A/C (necessary when staying in Kihei) generally worked well, but was strained in the afternoon, with the sun beaming in unobstructed through the elevated ceiling / windows. We admittedly like it cooler than most, at 72F. The inside temp would rise to 77/78F by about 5pm, cooling back down by about 8pm. The bedrooms would stay cooler, as they're sheltered from the afternoon sun in the back.

Excellent service by housekeeping, provided 3 times per week (note the schedule for us was Mon / Wed / Fri). I believe the housekeeping service depends on your unit, and who you rent through. We rented directly through the resort's website (www.maalaeasurfresort.com). All personnel were professional, courteous, and provided Aloha spirit. Mahalo Jeni!

We were pleasantly surprised with a plethora of beach toys, body boards, even snorkeling gear made available in our unit. It appears many of these are donations left by previous visitors, a nice way to 'pay it forward' for other travelers. We left a beach umbrella behind for the next family.

The grounds are beautiful and expertly maintained. There are two beautiful pools, a fun set of shuffleboards, great gas grills (though not at your lanai), and the beach is right there in front of you. It's a nice, picturesque, narrow walking beach. You'll want to visit the other beaches in South or West Maui for the best beach experiences.

The location is excellent for those who want to enjoy all of Maui, as we did. It's right at the northern tip of Kihei, which puts you in a prime central starting point for the day, no matter which direction you want to go. Amazing beaches in South Maui are 10-15min away. Lahaina and the beautiful West Maui beaches are 30-45min away. The start of the Hana Hwy, or route to Haleakala are ~30min away.

For supplies - groceries & ice are ~5 min away. I recommend using Costco (in Kahului, ~20min away) for your starter bulk food purchases, gas, and local favorites like Maui onion chips, variety fruit juices, Hawaiian Host chocolates, 100% Kona coffee, etc. They also have an awesome variety of fresh poke. The best shave ice in Maui (Ululani's) is just a block down S. Kihei Rd.

Do your research for the unit that fits your needs and budget. I suggest reviewing pic's of the interior, and chose which you like best. There's not a ton of difference in views / convenience between the "Beachfront" vs. "Oceanfront". You can save some money by going with a nice oceanfront unit and walk the extra few steps to the beach.

Also, it appears one or more units are being renovated (July '14), as there were construction crews onsite during the week (we didn't have any problems with their presence - no mess or noise). Nice to see the owners investing for the future - a good sign that this property will continue to be a solid place to call 'home'.

Room Tip: Review pics of the units, and choose which fits your needs. They are all great location, Beachfront...

Unit H5 was nicely stocked. Only real negative was that we were there during the last Olympics and their ancient tubed TV died early in our two week stay. Had to go to a pub to watch Olympic events. Beautiful beach front two bedroom unit with table and chairs on a great balcony overlooking the ocean. Nice to fall asleep listening to sound of the ocean. Lovely well maintained grounds with every other day maid service. You need a car to get around from these units but they were doing renos on the site and parking was sometimes problematic. I expect this was a temporary problem since resolved. The BBQ's were convenient and a nice touch. We enjoyed the sun-downer conch blowing ceremony as it tied in nicely with sun-downer cocktails.

Room Tip: Facing the ocean is ideal.

We stayed at the Maalaea Surf Resort every single spring for years growing up. It's a wonderful spot, great beach, nice families, and a great pool. We've hosted Easter Egg hunts, fish BBQs, and fake water ballet competitions, have read many-a-book by the pool, and have truly come to love this special spot. A great place for a quiet, relaxed vacation, well-situated and close to restaurants and good snorkeling. Many great condos to choose from. I hope you like it as much as we do! We've been more than 10 times. (The secret's out in Bellingham, WA!)

Room Tip: There are really nice units that face directly onto the beach, but really, you can't go wrong wi...

We started coming to this property based on a recommendation of a friend from BC. We have made several trips here since and would not stay anywhere else on Maui. If you are looking for a great condo with all that makes it Hawaii, this is the best. Right on the beach with 2 pools too. We love eating dinners in so the condo is ideal for us but not everyone.

The only way you're likely to be disappointed with this property is if you crave the mega action resort type of trip. If you've been to and prefer Lahaina and the likes of the mega hotels and condos, with the associated zoo like atmosphere, then don't choose this property. Otherwise if you want a laid back and more traditional Hawaiian atmosphere where the units are very good, the views incredible, the location great, the staff very helpful and the fellow travelers very friendly, then book one of the Maalaea Surf Resort condos. Each condo is different, we stayed in G8 for 1 week. The only negatives of the unit are it is a little dated and could use a refresh, particularly in the bathrooms. While the staff do a very good job keeping everything very clean, the unit probably hasn't been refreshed for a good 20 years or so. I typically like modern units (granite, stainless steel etc) but still found this unit "good enough" considering all the other very large positives of the MSR property. It's very easy to see why people come back to these condos over and over again through the years and decades. As much as I prefer trying new places, it's going to be hard to not choose MSR again when on Maui.
Pros:
Really well stocked kitchen
Boogie boards and beach stuff for the kids
Cleanliness
Location (on the beach), location (central in Kihei) location (small but great farmers market and other shops)
Pools, tennis courts, shuffleboard
Very helpful staff - new linens/towels and cleaning every 2 days during the week
Community feel - very easy to get to know the fellow guests, come on out for the sunset conch blowing celebration!
Cons:
G8 is due for a refresh, particularly the bathrooms. If this is a big deal for you, choose one of the other units that have recently been remodeled. Each are individually owned but most are managed by the owner's association.

Room Tip: Book early because the really good units go fast.

We just had our second stay at the Maalaea Surf Resort and I don't think that we will stay any where else on Maui from now on. It is the perfect central location to get to other parts of the island. We've stayed in Kaanapali many times and liked it but you can't beat a beach or oceanfront condo at the Maalaea Surf. It has a real feeling of old Hawaii with the Tahitian style condos, lots of lawn and palm trees, beautiful landscaping and beautifully appointed condos. Even if you stay in the ocean front condos, you get a very close feeling to the ocean. The beachfront are right within steps of the beach where as the ocean front are back but still facing the ocean. The beach is not crowded and you can walk in either direction for miles. Within a 5 minute walk, there is a small ABC store, Hawaiian Shave Ice, a delicious bakery with freshly baked quiches, muffins, etc., a small boutique with wonderful things to take home and a little farmer's market. We will be back next year!

Room Tip: From what we could see from walking around, they are all good. It just depends on how close you wan...

Aloha!
We've been coming to the Maalaea Surf Resort since 1987 and it is a timeless spot that has never disappointed nor changed it's blissful environment. Whatever happens, as the decades have passed, nothing has lost its charm or beauty. The units can be very different depending on each owner, as they reflect the taste of the owner. Generally you will notice the rooms are taken very good care of and seem to have been renovated over the past few years. Generally as a tip, the lanai units are beautiful and if you can squeeze into these lower units directly by the ocean with 3 people to save costs on an extra bedroom, they are absolutely worth the extra price you pay for the view. Works great with small children. If you need more space for 4-5 people the upper floors are ideal with bedrooms on 2 floors and a balcony.

Tip: If you book directly with the resort you will get very well taken care of units and the maid service is very friendly. If you have issues, the staff at the reception is very attentive. If you book with other agents not related to the resort, you will be disappointed. Although prices may be lower, rooms are not renovated, there is no maid service and generally the agents will not offer to help other than charging your credit cards. Your stay will come with disappointments, and there is nothing the reception can do to help, as these units are not run by the resort.

My personal favorite is the D-building and H-buildling. You will not be disappointed if you stay here. Whoever you meet at the resort, you can be sure that they either return year after year or if they are first timers, they'll be making arrangements to return to the beautiful island of Maui at some point in the future.

The island has many things to offer. Kihei is great for food, surfing, shopping, and catching a trip out to Molokini for snorkeling. Lahaina is great for a special night out with dinner while the sun sets. Catch a luau at Lahaina for a very nice Hawaiian experience. If you like to Mini Golf - close by Maalaea harbour you'll find a little place with a sculpted volcano - that's it! Fun course for kids and adults. Of course the real golf courses are available too all over the island. Wailea is great to catch a 18 hole course. Locals get great discounts, so make friends with the locals and they can show you some great spots. The Road to Hana is a wonderful day trip - a long 8 hour car ride - but totally worth it, as the pools are breathtaking to swim in. Make sure you grab the CD guide along the road to Hana at a local kiosk!

There are much more places to explore. It's difficult to write down all. If you get the chance to come to Maui you will not regret it. Maalaea Surf has been more than a home away from home! :)

Room Tip: The D-building is the best stay we've had directly set by the ocean. Definitely romantic for cou...
