My new husband and I were extremely happy with our choice of Nona Lani Cottages for our honeymoon in Maui. We arrived late at night, but we had received detailed instructions on where to find our cottage assignment and key. The cottage itself was well-appointed, very clean, and very comfortable. The air conditioner worked well, but wasn't necessary; with our windows open and the ceiling fan on, we were able to hear the surf crashing at night and the birds singing in the morning. (Closing the windows shut out a great deal of that sound, though.) There was some road noise, but it died down at night.

The cottages are directly across the street from the beach, and although I was afraid there would be big ugly condos or something else right there that was not shown in the photographs, I was wrong: the beach is beautiful, wide open, and was sparsely used. We saw a sea turtle right there on our last day and wished we'd spent more time snorkeling there.

The grounds and gardens are stunning; the photos on the web site really don't do them justice. The plants, trees, and flowers are obviously meticulously maintained. We feared we wouldn't be able to cook outdoors without a flashlight, but the owners have thought of that; there's great lighting at the BBQs.

The staff was friendly and knowledgable about the area, but not intrusive, which was perfect for us.

This location was perfect: close to Kihei (try breakfast at the Kihei Caffe, but get there EARLY!) and further-south snorkeling, not too far from Laheina and Kahului and points beyond. Also, very easy to get to.

Our only complaints are very small ones: We wished we'd discovered earlier that there were softer pillows in the closet, because the first night's sleep wasn't very pleasant, but as soon as we found the other pillows we were much better. And, I wish the kitchen had had a roll of paper towels or napkins as well as a couple of additional drinking glasses--my choices for a wine container were a 3-ounce cordial glass or a 16-ounce beer glass. However, these nit-picks were not troublesome to us.

Overall we were simply thrilled with Nona Lani Cottages and would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: If road noise bothers you, choose a garden view cottage; they are slightly more removed from the roa...

Aloha Heidi,

We at Nona Lani Cottages were thrilled to hear that we helped make your honeymoon a wonderful event, and one that will remain a beautiful memory of Maui as well as the aloha from folks here, including us.

Whew, I was happy that you did not find "hidden" condos blocking the beautiful view of the ocean. Yes, we purposely do not do "flashy" photos as we try to under-promise and over-deliver.

We just did a new set of photos of the grounds as well as the interior yesterday so we will be certain that these will be uploaded very soon to our website.

We also made a video with one of our New Zealand guest interviewing Nona the proprietor (my mother). We'll be posting this to a new You Tube channel that will be up and running on Nov. 1st. This will answer the questions Nona gets asked all the time about the history of Nona Lani Cottages and one that our repeat guests want to show their friends when they return home. Though Nona is a bit shy, she looks wonderful and very relaxed "talking story" with her guest.

You and your husband make Nona Lani Cottages worth coming to work for and so we thank you!
Mahalo for gracing our property with your presence!

Sincerely,

Cherlyn Kong

We stayed here during part of our honeymoon. The grounds were beautiful, the beach is right across the street and the location is pretty good (not a far drive to other spots in Kihei or Wailea). We had originally requested one of the ocean view cottages, but once we got there, we discovered that those cottages were right up next to the road. We requested one of the garden view cottages that are set back a bit and they were wonderful and let us move. They have extra towels and beach chairs for the guests to use (request at the office). Overall, we really liked this rental, the cottages were a little dated, but still had a great time staying here.

Aloha Hannah,

Mahalo for taking the time to do a review of Nona Lani Cottages. We see that you are a seasoned traveler and thank you for choosing to stay with us and letting us add special memories for your special time – your honeymoon.

Yes, Nona Lani Cottages grounds are beautiful and we are so glad that we were able to change your reservation to a Garden View cottage. We apologize that we did not emphasize the features of the Garden versus the Ocean View cottage settings. Our office staff is great about making sure we let you know about the two (2) lane scenic road (S. Kihei Rd.) being so close, along with offering an amazing view of the ocean. We may have missed this if you made an online booking and we did not have the opportunity or need to follow up with you by telephone for any added questions.

I take responsibility for you not knowing the Ocean View cottages are close to the scenic roadway and will update our website as well as our email responses to point this feature of the Ocean View cottages out more prominently for our potential guests.

Mind you, some of our guests just love the Ocean View cottage only and others a Garden View. Our goal at Nona Lani Cottages is to make sure we meet your expectations for rest and relaxation, and then some.

We do wish you great travels and again, we appreciate your time to let others know of your experience with Nona Lani Cottages on beautiful Maui!

Sincerely,

Cherlyn Kong, Manager

This is my second time staying at the Nona Lani Cottages, recently and 20 years ago. The grounds are beautiful, the people friendly and gracious. The cottages are a throwback to simpler days and are very nice. I love this place.

Aloha Peggy,

We so appreciate the time you took to review our property. We loved reading that the cottages allowed you to experience beauty, grace and friendliness. That is a real compliment!

It is so nice to know people take the time to "unwind" when they vacation. Though doing tourist sights and activities are great, one of the real beauties of Nona Lani Cottages is that it is peaceful, accessible to a great walking, swimming, and sunset viewing beach, and simply relaxing.

We are so thankful for guests who come back over and over again. We look forward to another of your returns in the near future.

Sincerely,

Cherlyn Kong

First of all, it was quiet and you could hear the ocean at night. You felt like you were out in the country with the birds singing as we had breakfast and coffee on the deck.
Along with a great location and the ocean across the street what more could you ask.
Yes, and the staff was excellent.

Room Tip: Our cottage was in the back and really quiet.

What a great stay! Such a great price, a steal really for your own little paradise! Just a quick few steps across the road to the beach, outdoor shower to wash the sand out from between your toes, and clean cottages equipped with everything you need! Will definitely be back! Slept so well each night, even with the cottages right near the road (beach view) the road noise does not keep you awake at night, all you hear is ocean waves :)

I was not able to make the trip to Maui this time with my daughters, they called me and told me they were in Kihei and asked if I would look for a place for them to stay (05/18/2013) I searched around and found Nona's site on Yelp. I called spoke to Catherine to find out availability and found that she had something for the girls and would give them a reduced rate!!

My daughter Meghan contacted me, said that the place was beautiful and the owner was awesome, the owner said that she was going to help my daughter to make a lei to put in the ocean for her Dad, we lost him 2yrs ago our last trip to Hawaii he took us to Oahu for a week he passed away 4 months later. I cried when Meghan told me that the owner would do this for her (us), it means so much to us that Meghan is able to honor her father this way, he loved the Islands and took us back every year while he was alive.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, I know that when all of us are able to go as a family we will be staying at Nona's.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth Malley and Family

Aloha Elizabeth Malley & Family,

We are so grateful for your Trip Advisor review. We most especially want to say thank you for letting us help in the celebrating of your loved ones life. It is a personal moment, and though with mixed emotions of joy and tears, your daughters allowed my mother to be a small part of it. As humans, we all have the same wants (to be recognized, appreciated and treasured by others, even if a stranger) and needs.

My mother, the owner, is the person your daughters met. She too lost her husband David Sr. about 2 years ago (Nov. 2011). Your special occasion reminded her of the blessing her business is and gives and creates more joy to share. It is a wonderful legacy of the business she & my father built together.

And we are so glad we had an opening in one of our suites that we could offer you a special rate. We usually do for persons arriving that same day.

We look forward to hearing from you in the near future. If you bring your whole family along, we can have a luau or at least a BBQ together!

I want to wish you and your family "Mahalo & Aloha" from the David & Winona Kong Family.

Sincerely,

Cherlyn Kong

We loved our stay at these cottages. We are not luxury type people. We love simple, friendly, feels like home places and this fit the bill beautifully. The owner, Nona and her family are welcoming and helpful. The other guests were friendly and we got great travel tips from some who stay here regularly. We loved making our own breakfast and enjoying it on the deck. Great to walk the beach in the morning. We never turned on the A/C as the night breezes cooled off the cottage and we were able to hear the waves at night and the birds in the morning. There is a fair amount of traffic on the road during the day but it quiets down at night. We were close to Kihei which made shopping and food purchase easy. We had to go to a lovely alcove bynthemoffice to get free wifi, but that meant we met more people. The gardens are spectacular. We wish we had had more time to enjoy this wonderful place. We will be back

Aloha Su-etravel48,

We so enjoyed reading your review of wanting a simple and friendly home atmosphere and found it in Nona Lani Cottages!

Yes we do agree that our mother Nona, is so very welcoming, helpful & kind, along with all the other staff and vendors that make Nona Lani Cottages a wonderful place to vacation at. They keep the grounds beautiful, the buildings in tact and cleaning of units in tip top shape and our office staff and everyone else does a great job of welcoming our guests and keeping them happy. All of this makes Nona Lani Cottages the very special and unique property and experience a "local" one.

We are happy to hear you met some new folks, & our return guests (we call them "our groupies") as they also make Nona Lani Cottages a place to feel like you are home, having fun & enjoying your day. I mentioned in a previous response that one of the things that makes traveling a great experience is to meet other travelers, as well as the locals and their foods.

The cottages and grounds offer so much for those who want to wander, as well as having Kong's Cove Beach to enjoy especially at sunset. Glad you were comfortable at our guest waiting area that offers free wi-fi. We decided that having an outdoor "waiting room" surrounded by plants and seating was a nicer touch and other guests have complimented on this as well.

We are grateful that we have done our job well enough that you plan on returning to Nona Lani Cottages. Hopefully that will be in the very near future!

Sincerely,
Cherlyn Kong, Mgr.
