We stayed on the second floor in building C and we could see the ocean from our balcony. Our place was updated but it did not have AC. This is something that all units should have. The wind was not blowing the entire 10 days we were there and we were dying of heat. It made the drives in the car enjoyable since that was our only way of getting AC. We have 2 kids and didn't experience the yelling at the kids or bad looks like other families. We did spend most of our time at the beach and not at the pool. We did go to the pool several times and no one was ever there. The office staff were very nice and the property overall is very nice. It is a short walking distance to cafes, ice cream, gelato, markets, and the beach. We enjoyed our time here but next time we will stay somewhere on the beach where you get the ocean breeze and a place that has ac.

Thank you for your review of the Kihei Akahi. As you mention, the location is great for walking across the street to a beautiful beach, or walking to nearby restaurants, ice cream, shops, etc. I am sorry that your condo did not have air conditioning. I believe this is somewhat rare at Kihei Akahi, as all 40+ vacation rentals that our condo management company manages at this property have air conditioning. I encourage you to give Kihei Akahi another shot on your return visit, as it sounds like the A/C was your only drawback.

We spent two days at the Kihei Akahi. The location was just great! Right across from the beaches in Kihei, and close to a number of decent restaurants. We spent most of one day at the beach. The soft sand, gentle waves really great for young children. For comparison, we like the Kihei/Kama'ole beaches MUCH more than the beaches near Kapalua. With young children, it was unpleasant to be on the more rocky beach full of pebbles on the West Side.

The condo is dated on the outside - the old metal door was a bit of a turn off. However, the interior is updated (we were in C413), with good lighting and spacious kitchen with all the necessary cooking utensils and spices for our simple meals. The markets are nearby, so easy to get what we need. The condo we stayed in had boogie boards and beach umbrellas - very convenient.

The pools were decent, but small, with depth from 3 to 8 feet. Good for the first day, and for playing around after the beach, but not to spend much time at.

All in all, location is the best thing about the Kihei Akahi.

Mahalo for your review of the Kihei Akahi and condo C413, which our vacation rental company manages. We are glad you found the condo updated and supplied with everything you needed for your vacation on Maui. All of our condos we manage must possess a list of over 100 items which we find visitors are expecting.
We agree that Kihei Akahi's amazing location across the street from Kamaole Beach Park II is very convenient for guests. You can be at a calm white sand beach that has life guards in seconds! We hope you also got to enjoy the nearby restaurants like Fred's Mexican Cantina or the 808 Deli.
See you again at the Kihei Akahi!

First off let's say that this property is in a great location. Across the street from the beach and a short walk to all amenities. It was very nice to walk for groceries or go for ice cream without having to get in the car. Our unit C-505 was well equipped with everything we needed for beach fun and had all the comforts of home.

I think it's time for the strata to re brand the Kihei Akahi to an over 65 building. No kids allowed. There seems to be two sets of rules, one for short-term guests and another for long term resident owners. While it is okay for the longterm residents to blow their conchs and chant from their balconies every evening as the sun sets it is not okay for a group of 8 & 10 year olds to sit in a circle out front of their lanai and do puzzles....

At the pool, you cannot do anything that resembles fun. You will get dirty looks and even be told to settle down by the "regulars". Just a thought, if you don't want to get wet don't sit near the edge of the pool, especially at spring break.

I could go on and on but my advice is that if you are a family or like to socialize in a small group (2 couples), stay elsewhere.

Room Tip: building "C" higher has nice views. Unit C-505 was great

Aloha and thank you for your review of Kihei Akahi. Our vacation rental management company manages many condos at the Kihei Akahi. I am glad you enjoyed the location across the street from Kamaole Beach Park II, which is a great family beach that is lifeguarded. It is also great that you can walk to restaurants, ice cream, and other fun options. We host many families year after year and have not heard too many complaints about property rules being strict on children but I have passed on your comments to the property board of directors so that your voice may be heard and they can discuss your observations.

Wow! This condo is fabulous. CLEAN and COMFORTABLE. It had everything we needed for a perfect vacation. The kitchen was fully stocked - a cupboard full of spices to cook with plus every kitchen convenience including a coffee grinder, pineapple slicer, rice cooker and 2 blenders +++ There were also beach chairs, boogie boards, binoculars, coolers and ice packs. Our mornings were spent having coffee on the lanai watching the sun come up over the mountain and enjoying the birds in the garden. After a day at the beach we loved the giant shower. It is within walking distance to shops, restaurants, icecream and a general store. We will definitely book here again.

Room Tip: Building C has lovely afternoon cool breeze.

EXCELLENT VALUE CONDO! Very Central Kihei, Maui location on the sun belt side of the island, best area for sunsets on Island. Close to everything but now right it the busy side of stuff- the pricey Beverly Hills type resorts are just down the road at Wailea. These condos are approx. 40 yrs old so check your unit since they been updated in different times and upgrades vary inside but also keep that in mind when comparing to a 4-5 Star New Resorts be reasonable to compare the prices and you will find tremendous value here. 4 Unit complexes 228 units the D Building farthest back one on the hill has best views and most quiet. This place has local Hawaiian feel. 2 Pools/Tennis Court little dated and totally usable but best is the Public Beach is just a few steps across the road. Tropically landscaped though out and well groomed. Great Bar & Cantina Like Restaurant adjacent to entry of property with fun happy hour and nightly local entertainment , big plus! Lots of places within a short walk. For the price this the best find on the island for the full flavor of Maui. Reviewers should be fair this is a Condo experience not a new resort hotel, if you want that book a room. I use to live there and worked at the executive office in the Five Star Grand Wailea Resort so I have been to all other condos around and for the money this is the place I send my family to stay. Aloha!

Room Tip: Awesome Condo Setting! A Building up front by Street - B and C - nestled in the trees and D Buildin...

The Complex: It is nicely located at Kam2 beach with 2 restaurants & 1 deli just steps from the door.
Grounds are well maintained including 2 pools, 4 BBQ's & a tennis court.

Units are individually owned with a varying level of updates/upgrades for each unit.
We have been visiting Hawaii every couple of years since 1995 with some condo's reviewed here.
The condo unit we rented rates as one of our least desirable stays over the years.

The Unit: We booked D313. I would describe our unit as a "by the numbers" revenue property where the owner probably never visits to see its deficiencies. While none of these deficiencies are what I would call vacation ruining, I know from personal experience that there are many better units to choose from on the Islands for similar dollars.

Some of the things substandard in this unit would include:
1. Multiple 'tired/loose' electric outlets that can't support the weight of an iPhone charger/adapter.
The fridge became disconnected when we plugged the coffee maker into the same outlet by the counter. Lucky for us, nothing had spoiled as we hadn't done our grocery shop yet.

2. There's an eclectic collection of dishes clearly acquired from garage sales as almost nothing matches.
The kitchen was well equipped for preparing bowls of cereal. MacGyver skills were needed for other food prep with a pie slice server used for flipping at the BBQ until the local rep kindly dropped off a set of BBQ tongs.

3. The oven wasn't working.

4. For the first time ever, we had to empty a drip tray/tub (about 6 gal) located under the AC unit every couple of days. (see pix)

(hint: Hale Kamaole condo window AC boxes have a PVC tube drain system that couldn't be that expensive for the complex to install). This was not convenient.

5. There was no room safe in the unit.

6. We wondered if the door to the unit was secure. It looked like the door had been repaired, not replaced after obvoiusly being kicked in at some point in the past. (comforting, eh?). The door had cracks in the wood around the door knob/lock and was not tight when closed.

7. Most units in this complex have Jalousie windows. You get the pro's of high airflow when they're opened & the cons of whistling wind and noise when they're shut during a storm.
Since these windows were frosted, we were unable to see the beautiful view of the water when they were closed.
Depends on what you like....

8. A bathroom reno had been recently done. The original taps, light fixture & outlet plug were not replaced and this in my opinion shows that it was done by an owner who does only what's minimally needed to maintain the revenue.

Upon passing along suggestions to the local support rep for this unit, we learned that more updates are planned for D313 in May, 2014.

So I'd say book elsewhere until next fall.

Next year it might be worth staying in this condo, but for now, stay at another unit in this complex (good location), or choose one of many other nice units which can be had just to the south of this complex towards Kam3 which will currently give you a much better bang for your buck.

Thank your for your review of Kihei Akahi. It sounds like you enjoyed the grounds, location, and amenities (pools, BBQs, etc.), but had some issues with your exact condo. Unfortunately our condo management company does not manage that particular condo so we cannot speak to the matter, but we encourage you to return to the Kihei Akahi again for a future vacation. There are many ways to view specific condos at the Kihei Akahi and put in requests to stay in those units, so you know exactly what to expect when you arrive. We hope you give the Kihei Akahi another try!

When we first arrived late on Jan.9th ( like after midnite) we had trouble with the security code to let us in to the condo after numerous phone calls and going through 2 different codes we were finally allowed access to our unit. The condo was nice...newly upgraded living area and kitchen. The bedroom was okay ...needs an update and the bathroom does need some work.....clean up the corners and clean the baseboards....needs a serious update. No safe, no free wifi and no a/c. We continued to have trouble with the security code until they explained to us the first one we got was just temporary, but we were never told that, also every week it changes. When we booked through our travel agent in June/13 we requested...ocean view, safe, king size bed....not one request was met. But, all in all it was a wonderful holiday and we hope to return some day.

Mahalo for your review of Kihei Akahi. Our condo rental agency does not manage unit C-207, but it sounds like besides some communication issues (key code and requested features), you enjoyed the property and plan to return. We hope to see you at the Kihei Akahi again in the future!
