“Unit A101”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 August 2014

I have to admit, I was initially discouraged on the night we arrived. At first glance, the stained carpets, somewhat beatup bathroom cabinets, and 70's style countertops and faucets made me feel we had rented a substandard unit. To top it off, the unit is at the front of the Kihei Akahi property, which meant we were right on the main road through Kihei. And when we arrived, the restaurant next door was busy. I was dismayed - what had I booked us into for the next two weeks? BUT! This condo turned out to be our haven and I quickly came to realise that despite the carpet stains, it was very clean. And the important things, like the appliances, had all been updated and worked well. The fans and air con were good and the place was well lit. The restaurant was fine. They didn't play loud music and they were really quiet after 10:30 (their required quiet time). We soon felt right at home in "our" condo. Yes, it's on a busy road, but all that activity felt fun and the beach was a stone's throw from our door. We had a view of the sunset every evening, and could check out the waves by looking out the window. Plus, it was a short and flat walk to the local health food grocery store, wine shop, good sandwich and shave ice places, and Snorkel Bob's. (There is some snorkel gear in the condo, but it is pretty old.) The rustic nature of the condo soon felt comfortable and relaxed and the full kitchen was great for cooking. I would recommend it to anyone who isn't caught up in granite countertops and all that. Think of it as a wonderful family beach house! The only thing is that the back bedroom (not the master) has only a ceiling fan and no air con. It got pretty warm up there in July, but otherwise I would think it might be okay. Our teenagers were warm but basically fine most nights with the window open and the fan on, though the birds woke them at dawn. Oh, and the king-sized bed was fine on the window side, but sagged on the other side. I just moved into the middle where it was firmer. I saw another review about the mess on the balcony from the Banyan tree. That's true, so we just used the lanai rather than the balcony. It did not have the same mess. Also, the owner is very nice to chat with on the telephone, but slow responding to emails. Next time we book, I'll just call him.

Room Tip: This unit is an end unit. While there is a restaurant next door, it was not too noisy and I think t...

We've been staying at Kihei Akai since the mid 70's when my Grandparents bought their first condo. This is definitely the only place to stay where everything is in walking distance. Best beach, best restaurant (Fred's Taco's!) and only a few minutes drive to anything else you might need. We stay in A or C building now (D building too far away) and the beach is 50 feet one way and the poop 20 feet the other. Grounds are always amazing, the staff is amazing, the grilling area is always super clean. Love everything about Kihei Akahi!

Mahalo for taking the time to write your review of the Kihei Akahi. I am pleased to hear you have been coming to visit for so many years - you must have seen so many changes over that time.

One of the wonderful aspects of the Akahi is that the four buildings are unique and are positioned differently on the grounds so that different guests preferences can be accomodated.

I hope you keep coming back and, personally, I would enjoy hearing your stories about the visits you have made over the years.

Third stay at Palekaiko at the Kihei Akahi. This place is absolutely amazing. It is very clean and has all the necessities for a wonderful stay. The location is fantastic. Close to shopping, restaurants, convenience stores and of course sublime beaches. A very special thanks to D. We look forward to our return.

Many rules of engagement for this functional, efficiency condo, but none for how inexpensive the owner can go. Internetly speaking the property is beautiful and it is, ah! but, D601, well that's a different story. There is a darkness about the property, which comes from the interior sidewalks, which aren't exactly clean, dark doors and screen doors. Our unit was in the back building, where the exterior was brighter.

The window air conditioner wasn't enough to cool this studio apartment and the filter needed changing, we changed it ourselves. It was the absolute dirtiest filter I have even seen in life. Almost like dust bunnies on hardwood floors. We did request a fan and it was delivered. The bed was an absolute horror, we sank deeply into each other. Good thing I was with my husband. The mattress was hard rimmed with a soft middle.

According to the rules of engagement, rooms are cleaned thoroughly after each guest. We're not so sure about that: strands of hair and dirt was in the shower and on the basin rim. Curtain smelled stale, but no mildew. Bed linen smelled strongly of sweetness. I changed the pillow cases, but suffered through the linen (I've travel Tibet). Dish drainer filthy. Refrigerator had spilled OJ or some other colored stains on the floor of the door. I gave in on the last day and cleaned it myself. The coffee maker has tomato juice on the handle, probably from another guest's pizza. Bathroom mirror dirty and stayed that way. Maybe they only had time to furnish the rooms with clean towels.

The room was cheaply furnished. I imagine that goes without saying. We got through it without slipping on whatever had been spilled on the kitchen floor. One window was broken and wouldn't close and the iron wouldn't heat. I called extension #3, but there wasn't an answer, so this wasn't reported.

The Staff was nice. They waved, said aloha. A plus was the washer/dryer which worked. Microwave, stove and cutlery.

Thank you for your review of the Kihei Akahi, and condo D601, which our vacation rental company manages. It sounds like your two main concerns were the cleanliness and bed (mattress/linens). Each of our condos are professionally cleaned by different on-island cleaning companies. We will be sure to report your claims to the cleaning company for this condo and inspect the work before future guests arrive to assure high standards are met. We will inspect the mattress and advise the owner to purchase a new mattress should we find similar results.
We hope you were still able to have an enjoyable stay on Maui and hope to see you back at the Kihei Akahi!

The condo was great for our family of 3! We have a 3 year old that loves to run and explore and this was perfect for him. I won't say this was comparable to a 5 star resort, because it isn't. It's a functional and comfortable space for your family and everything you need is available (i.e. sheets, towels, kitchenware, some beach toys, etc). There is shag carpet with stains, but it was clean of debris and still soft. The kitchen isn't chef quality, but it works. The furniture in the bedrooms and living room are not brand new, but they are functional and clean. The balcony furniture is sturdy. There are a few things that need repair (and we left them on the comment card). The bathrooms have been completely remodeled and look gorgeous!!! There is only one air condition in the unit but if you leave the windows open and turn on the fans that's all you need. Overall the unit was comfortable and functional.

There is a curfew at Kihei Akahi and they are very strict about it. If you like to party loud till 1am, then this would not be a good place for that. Personally we don't mind since one of the allures is sitting on the balcony drinking wine at 10pm and listening to the waves from the ocean one block away. Security is constantly monitoring the area and are responsive to people calling in "disruptive neighbors". We had no problems or issues with noise.

The area itself is great for families, there is a beach across the street and if you keep walking over there is a small swing set available for the kids. There are limited shops and eateries available in the surrounding area that are walkable. You will need a car to get to other attractions but Kihei Akahi is a great home base. We would definitely return and if this unit was available we would rent again.

This condo was great for our family of 4 (mom, dad and 2 daughters 18 and 20). The location is excellent--just a block away from a fabulous beach with great swimming and snorkeling and a nice atmosphere for both locals and tourists. The condo is clean, quiet, and pleasant. The air conditioning worked great in the evening when we needed it. We appreciated the beach towels and beach chairs and other sundry water items. The ground floor is wonderful for ease of access and also because the four of us could sit on the deck/lawn to enjoy breakfast. The owner was available when we had a question and responded quickly in setting up the accommodation. We definitely recommend this place. We also highly recommend the S&Q coffee/smoothie place just down the street for breakfast.

We stayed in D109 - back building. There is a disregard for the actual accommodations for this unit, there is a small air conditioner - on a 6 hour timer - in the living room. There is no air in the bedroom or elsewhere - thus making is horrendous to sleep because it is over 80 degrees in the unit. Two ceiling fans do not make one breeze. We moved the bed in the living room in order to sleep! The kitchen, bathroom and closets are still original 1980 fashioned - rusted, old looking, yuck. Yes, new sofa & chair but grossly cheap.

Laundry in unit is great. Nice refrigerator. Designated parking space. That's it.

Lots of noise from neighbors at all hours despite designated "quiet hours". Perfect to walk to beach, unit supplies chairs, umbrella, mat for use.

But honestly, the convenience to beach doesn't make up for cheap, cheap, cheap. Great for students or those on budget.

Aloha and thank you for taking the time to comment on your experience.

Each condo is individually owned and managed and as a result, the furnishings, decor and contents of the units within the Kihei Akahi vary.

We have passed along your comments to the owner and manager of this unit so that they can address the issues raised.

We have also passed along your comments about the noise to our on-site team. The Board of Directors at the Kihei Akahi works hard to ensure that the common area experience is kep to a high standard and that includes keeping noise levels down during quiet hours.

We hope you enjoyed your trip to Maui and that we will see you again.
