I have to admit, I was initially discouraged on the night we arrived. At first glance, the stained carpets, somewhat beatup bathroom cabinets, and 70's style countertops and faucets made me feel we had rented a substandard unit. To top it off, the unit is at the front of the Kihei Akahi property, which meant we were right on the main road through Kihei. And when we arrived, the restaurant next door was busy. I was dismayed - what had I booked us into for the next two weeks? BUT! This condo turned out to be our haven and I quickly came to realise that despite the carpet stains, it was very clean. And the important things, like the appliances, had all been updated and worked well. The fans and air con were good and the place was well lit. The restaurant was fine. They didn't play loud music and they were really quiet after 10:30 (their required quiet time). We soon felt right at home in "our" condo. Yes, it's on a busy road, but all that activity felt fun and the beach was a stone's throw from our door. We had a view of the sunset every evening, and could check out the waves by looking out the window. Plus, it was a short and flat walk to the local health food grocery store, wine shop, good sandwich and shave ice places, and Snorkel Bob's. (There is some snorkel gear in the condo, but it is pretty old.) The rustic nature of the condo soon felt comfortable and relaxed and the full kitchen was great for cooking. I would recommend it to anyone who isn't caught up in granite countertops and all that. Think of it as a wonderful family beach house! The only thing is that the back bedroom (not the master) has only a ceiling fan and no air con. It got pretty warm up there in July, but otherwise I would think it might be okay. Our teenagers were warm but basically fine most nights with the window open and the fan on, though the birds woke them at dawn. Oh, and the king-sized bed was fine on the window side, but sagged on the other side. I just moved into the middle where it was firmer. I saw another review about the mess on the balcony from the Banyan tree. That's true, so we just used the lanai rather than the balcony. It did not have the same mess. Also, the owner is very nice to chat with on the telephone, but slow responding to emails. Next time we book, I'll just call him.
