“Well done”
Reviewed 13 June 2014

This attraction is basically a boardwalk over the pond/refuge, with lots of educational signs explaining what is going on. I went with friends, and we all enjoyed it. They actually went back a second time the next day while I was at work. It would be suitable for kids, and adults that like to learn.

“Interesting little spot”
Reviewed 3 April 2014

Lots of shorebirds, nice boardwalk, and great white sand beach, worth a stop for walk, picnic but on windy days the sand blows across the road and it can get hot mid day.

“Beautiful vistas”
Reviewed 19 March 2014 via mobile

The Kealia refuge is a wonderful expanse of an unspoiled beach and a vast, protected wetland. Those of us who live on Maui are grateful for the unspoiled views from both the beach walk as well as from the refuge. Some visitors may expect more birds, but you have to put things in perspective. The Hawaiian Islands are thousands of miles from other land masses and we don't have an enormous amount of migratory birds.
That being said, visiting Kealia is a worthwhile glimpse into how birds have adapted to Hawaii. We were fortunate to have Malcolm welcome us to the visitor center where he shared his passion for this gem of a national wildlife refuge.

“Not much to see”
Reviewed 18 March 2014

Perhaps it was the time of year, but we did not see much except for the stilts and the coots. The information center was not staffed, so we just wandered around before heading out to the observation area. As mentioned, we saw some stilts and coots, but not much else. More "hands on" information about the wildlife would have enhanced the trip.
