I'm going to preface my following very harsh words by saying the remedy for the situation at hand was not anything that would have been a challenge to solve, but the greed of the management agency over the captive island and contract bound rental management agencies is what has ruined my vacation.
What can I say, I paid for a two room condo and effectively received a one bedroom and a couch i return. This is not to say that the condo does not have two rooms and two king size beds. However unless you come from the little latitudes of the equator, there is no way anyone could use the back bedroom for anything other than luggage storage.
First off, it is well known that HI is having a heat wave, it was known that it was coming. It was known that the trade winds had shut off killing the "cooling breezes" that are so often touted as the reason for no A/C in the greater HI condo market. However was anything done to mitigate these well known conditions. No.
Upon arrival, the unit was completely sealed, shades up, and not a fan or A/C unit running. I would conservatively estimate that the interior of the until was well in the upper 90's Fahrenheit. My first disappointment! That someone could not take the time to at least come into the unit and prepare it for the arrival of guests in such conditions is unconscionable.
From there we turn on the two A/C floor units. (one in master, one in living room) These should have been able to cool down the master bedroom and the living room to an extent that the back bedroom would be livable with the overhead fan running. Sadly no. These units were OLD and barely kicked out cool. Furthermore, they were incredibly undersized for the size of the unit.
I however gave the situation the benefit of the doubt and let the AC units run full blast, shades drawn, windows shut for a complete day and a half. At the end of that time, the back bedroom, still in the 90's with the living room in the mid to upper eighties and the master bedroom in the low to mid eighties. Furthermore, the ceiling fan in that back bedroom does very little for the situation as it barely moves enough air to feel a breeze while laying on the bed.
This all ended with having to sleep on a couch in front of an air conditioner for the four days of my stay.
NOW THE TRULY UPSETTING SITUATION.
After this first day I sent an email and left a voicemail message for the rental agency at Rentals Maui. Not only were these complaints NOT remedied, they didn't even acknowledge them with a response. Absolutely nothing, no phone call, no email, no agent stopping by to check out the situation.
Listen people, this unit has potential as its been nicely remodeled. The location is nice. its clear from the materials provided that the owners care and want to provide a quality rental. The kitchen would have been a great place to cook an amazing meal to enjoy at sunset on your balcony, yet there is no WAY we would have even thought about adding any unnecessary head into the condo unit
If you are expecting to get a livable unit that you can enjoy any kind of open windows while you are here (yes you could NEVER open them as if you did you'd spend 36 hours trying to get the place back to 85 degrees), you will be sorely disappointed. Admittedly if you're renting in the cooler months, its probably not a problem.
We as the general renting public however have to make a stand.
At least three of the owners I met there had ZERO interest in doing anything about the situation (read... greed). But it is not just this unit or complex. It is everywhere in Maui. The vast majority of the condo units are marginally air conditioned at best. and they are happy to let you sweat and not sleep and smirk and say .. "ya know.. nobody has A/C and its hot this time of year" ... read, we know we're stealing your money and don't care.
Until we demand better, they will continue to shrug their shoulders at you as they march to the bank with your precious hard earned money and you will leave with the disappointment and the loss of your even more precious vacation time.
I would welcome remedy from the owners and/or the rental agency at this point still (I'm reasonable) and I will return and update should that happen. However I have to say at this point my hopes are extremely low
