Attraction details
Owner description: Located in Kihei on the south shore of Maui, the visitor center is an ideal spot to learn about the marine environment and even see humpback whales breaching. This scenic beachfront location at the foot of Haleakala has views of Kaho'olawe, Lana'i and West Maui looking across the waters of the sanctuary. Visitors to the new center inKihei will be able to learn about the efforts by NOAA, the State of Hawaii, and others to protect humpback whales, monk seals, sea turtles, and coral reefs.

“Great Education on Whales and Marine Life”

Like a lot of the review already out there, I agree the federal funding is disappointing at this facility. I think we need to start paying more attention to nature and our oceans and after seeing this center it's obvious the government is still not there yet. The volunteers are extremely informative and friendly. We missed the lecture on Tues/Thurs but next year when in Maui I will make an effort to see one. Worth stopping by, especially if you have children.

“Great Information”
Reviewed 11 February 2014

The Federal funding for this Visitor Center is pathetic but the volunteers are knowledgeable and friendly. There is a public one hour presentation every Tuesday and Thursday at 11:00 and the information is very worthwhile if you are interested in the sea life on the Islands.

“Great Education”
Reviewed 24 January 2014

Was driving by on Kihei Rd. We decided we needed to check this place out. Lots to see on the grounds if you have a look around. Building opens at 10 am Monday through Friday, might want to get there a bit early parking lot is busy. This attraction is free. Michael is a volunteer as well as our guide and was very knowledgable about the turtles, whales, seals. What this foundation does to help whales and other sea animals that are caught up in fishing lines, as well what damage is caused to the animal if not freed from the lines or hooks. There are binoculars that you can use to look out to see whales in the ocean. Due to what this museum is all about and is run by volunteers we bought a T-shirt to show our support. Well worth your time to check this place out.

“Good education on whales”

Allow at least 1 1/2 hours for the lecture at 11am on Tues and Thurs. Very nice facility and docents. View from the ocean side deck is great. A must if you are at all interested in the humpback whales.

“Educational”
Reviewed 19 January 2014

Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:00 is their free hour long talk and slide show about whales. I am very glad that we went. I learned so many things about Humpback whales. The staff is nice and it is a volunteer based site. Buy a shirt to support them. I did.
