“Happy at Kihei Bay Surf”

I stayed in room 137 with three other guys on a surfing trip. We knew it would be snug but it wasn't so bad with a murphy bed and a fold out couch that we could fold up during the day leaving us lots of living space. The room was clean and well maintained. The unit was away from the road so it was quiet at night. We went on our trip to see Maui not to hang out in our room. The location was great because we didn't have to travel all the way through Kihei to get to the main road to go to Lahaina or to head off to Hana and the upcountry. We used the kitchen and the BBQ area. Good value for the money, we would stay there again. Oh yeah there is a great beach right across the street right next to the Marine Mammal Center.

We had a Great Time on our first visit to the state of Hawaii. Chose Maui because it looked like a do-able island for the 10 days we had to see it. We have just returned from staying 8 days at the Kihei Bay Surf, #228. The owner was very helpful, both in phone contacts and emails that were quickly answered. The condo was bright and sunny and very clean. We had a full kitchen, a comfortable bed, a great TV. We didn't use the VHS or CD player, but they were present. There was actually a view of the ocean through the palm trees from our lanai. We used the condo simply as a base from which we would drive to different destinations, such as Hana, the West Maui Mountains, etc. But it was nice to be able to cook meals at the condo and not have to spend a lot of money on meals out. There is a BarBQ in the common area of the condo, which we made good use of. The only reason I didn't give the condo an Excellent was that the screen was missing off the entry door. It would have been really nice to have been able to open the door wide to allow the breezes to go through and cool the place in the evening, but biting bugs like me too well to chance that. Everything worked well and we would definitely return to this condo, if we were to go back to Maui. All in all, a great visit to a beautiful island, with a nice little condo as our home away from home.

Stayed in studio unit at Kihei Bay Surf for one week in Feb/05. Nice layout, good for two people. However, upon our arrival this unit had a pile of dirt under the bed, insect(ants?) infestation in kitchen and bath, headboard not attached to bed or wall(so it smacked my husband on the head) and required maintenance to repair hole in the wall where apparently the doorknob smashed into wall.

Has potential, but needs some TLC and exterminator. Not worth what we paid for it.

Saw other units in complex that were very clean and well maintained, so buyer beware.

I rented a second floor condo with a murphy bed (unit 207). The unit was clean, nicely remodeled and did provide limited ocean view. The kitchen counter space is pretty limited since its a studio so cooking is a constant exercise in space management. There is no dishwasher in this unit. The noise from Kihei road is quite loud and audible even over the AC. The complex is mostly occupied by long-term residents who appear to be have mixed feelings for short-term tourists. The manager is a strange character who lounges shirtless on his stoop all day. There is no reserved parking and the laundry room closes very early so get your laundry done early. The manager rudely refused to let me use the laundry even though there was 1/2 hr left till closing. There is a pool and hottub which looked OK the one time I used them. There was a tree trimming crew that started up with their chainsaws at 8 am and would continue the deafening racket till 2 pm. Not good if you are trying to sleep in. I guess it does show they are trying to take care of the property. If you are going to use this place mostly to crash at night then its OK, otherwise avoid it for noise (or get a unit away from the road) and the slightly seedy atmosphere. Also be aware that beaches in Kihei are not as nice in this general area (lots of seaweed and smell) but it suited us fine since we drove to much nicer beaches elsewhere in Wilea Makena etc. or were otherwise busy exploring the island. For an excellent guidebook get Maui Revealed-the ultimte guidebook which details the good and bad beaches.
