This is our 2nd time staying at Luana Kai and not the last. We stayed in the same unit as last year and also booked 5 additional units for our family (we came from Seattle to get married). All the units we reserved had a/c (specified at time of booking), were clean, fully equipped with kitchens, and comfortable. Most of the units were fully updated, and the ones that were not were pretty nice. The staff was very accommodating and helpful. It's located near lots of beaches, restaurants, and activities, but I'd definitely suggest still renting a car to get to them. The grounds are nicely manicured, the ocean is a short walk across the yard, pool area has several BBQs, and it's pretty low key & quiet (the 2 times we've been anyway). The only downside for me is there is no day spa. We will certainly be back again.

I would definitely come stay here again and highly recommend it to everyone, especially those with young kids. We had a ground floor unit and it wasn't newly updated or anything but it was spotless and everything worked great - no bugs or anything haha. What I loved the most was the big property for the kids to run around on and you don't have to worry about them running out onto the road. It's a beautiful spot and you get a nice breeze off the ocean. Our unit didn't have a/c and it always stayed nice and cool.. I even got cold at night so that was nice. The pool area is very nice as well and lots of barbeques. It would be my first choice when we get to come back! And Leslie was awesome as well!!

We stayed at the Luana Kai in April of 2014 on our 2nd trip to Maui, and we only WISHED we would have known about it the first time! Our condo was 3rd floor overlooking the pool and was very spacious for 2 couples. What I also liked was that there was always ample parking near the stairs to our condo - there's nothing worse than hauling suitcases and groceries from the other end of the parking lot when it's hot out!

The AC was broken in our room when we arrived which we were devastated about, but is not the fault of the hotel itself. Fortunately there was enough of a breeze that we were never uncomfortable.

The hotel is situated on the beach, and no, it's not really a swimming beach. If you want a beach to spend the day at, this may not be it. But, if you're a pool person, you're in the right spot! Great pool, great hot tub, and we didn't have too much trouble getting chairs and shade.

The best part about this pool area is the outdoor kitchen! With a full fridge, sink, stove and 6 BBQ's, you could take your lunch/supper to the pool, store it, and have everything ready to cook without having to make trips back to your room. Although it could get busy there in the evenings, we were never waiting on a BBQ or seating.

At 10 pm, the pool (and basically the entire resort) shuts down. If you want to 'party', it may not be the place for you OR you may just have to go into your condo and tone it down a bit. But on the flip side, it was great knowing we wouldn't be kept awake all night like we are sometimes at all-inclusive's.

There's not much to walk to from Luana Kai (when talking restaurants, stores, etc.) but everything is a short distance by car and I'm sure most people likely have a vehicle to get around the Island anyway.

All in all, great value, great atmosphere, well maintained facility, can't wait to get back!

Luana Kai was an affordable and comfortable base for our Maui stay. Our unit D205 was clean, well furnished, and fully equipped with a wonderful lanai for eating meals outdoors and watching sunsets. The beach out front was wonderful for long walks at low tide or finding a shady place to sit and read, watch the waves or a passing outrigger canoe and even turtles. There is a very large green space between condo buildings and the sand perfect for throwing a ball or a frisbee. We used both the pool and the barbeques. Having the washer/dryer in the unit was also handy. It was a short drive to great snorkel beaches such as Ulua beach, a visit to Wailea/Paia and finding grocery shopping or restaurants. It got a little hot in the late afternoon as the sun was setting since there was no AC.

A great facility with all the right touches. Spacious unit. Gorgeous views on the ocean, well kept grounds, central location, business services if you need them, and the friendliest hosts on Maui! This is the place to stay when visiting Hawaii.

This is a great resort, however the location isn't. My review is on the resort, not the condo we rented.

It is the old "you get what you pay for". Yes, the water is in front of this resort (about 100m away). But, about all you can do is look at it or walk along the beach. It isn't a swimming beach because the fact that the water is so shallow for so long it's nearly impossible to swim in. Subsequently everybody either hangs around the pool or vacates the place for other beaches in the Kihei area of Maui.

The complex is big. 4 groups of units. Probably 100 units total. We happened to be there when a group (46) of Canadians from Vancouver Island were there (I am Canadian also) and this group completely took over the pool area. No chairs, you couldn't get under the kitchen area, or in the hot tub if your life depended on it. They really gave us Canadians a bad name. But, that's not what this want is about - the management didn't utter a word to them.

The grounds are nice, but as someone else has pointed out, I have never seen so many bugs at a condo in Maui, and I have stayed at a few. They were everywhere - outside at the pool, in the condos, yech. I think it is because this area of Kihei is so marshy, and according to our GPS, about 7ft below sea level. It's a wonder it drains after a rain storm.

There's nothing directly around this condo complex to do - everything you would have to drive. You can walk to the strip malls down South Kihei road, but the fact that there's no sidewalks until you hit McDonald's is pretty scary, despite the 50km/h speed limit. Oh, and don't walk at night, as there's absolutely no street lights.

We were in a third floor unit with a loft. WARNING - there's no elevators (not that I need it), but watching some older people lug their suitcases up the stairs was pretty worrisome at times.

The plus to this place was the owner of our condo had recently updated it, so the amenities inside were worth what we paid.

I won't be back to this area of Maui, as it isn't us. Back to Lahaina.

First thing we noticed; The cleaning crew for these condos needs a lesson or two. Every little nook has grunge; under cabinets, light fixtures and appliances!
Second awakening; Dogs everywhere......not a problem with the dogs but owners dont pick up the dogs mess and no one around from this resort does either!
Third thing and the biggest problem; COCKROACHES! We complained to management but felt our complaint went on deaf ears. We have killed about 8 so far but today one jumped out of the bathroom ceiling fan onto my husband while he was in the shower! Needless to say, I'm freaked out to shower now!
This condo is noisy with inconsiderate neighbors, dirty and infested!
