“First time - hopefully not last”
Reviewed 27 April 2014

Stayed for a week on our first trip to Hawaii. Tastefully decorated and clean ocean view unit with everything including board games, books and beach chairs. The grounds were immaculate and the barbeque grills (which we used every day) were well kept. We love to walk and found that we could walk to the nearby shopping area by using the back roads, thereby avoiding traffic. A wonderful Farmers Market is just up the road, providing reasonably priced produce. I agree that this is not a place for loud and boisterous children, although in the evening the "older folks" can get a bit loud playing cards. After 10pm all is quiet. We used a mangement company (AMR) to rent from and would surely used them again.

We had not been to Maui for a while and this was booked by my wife in Kihei. This property is mostly privately owned and occupied by retired folks, so your rental could be really nice or really bad. The front desk does nothing but hand you keys. The management company provides other services. The grounds are nice. Units are smallish and amenities vary. The staff near the pool are concerned with selling you trips and services and little else. Early breakfast is a joke. Book on the internet. Their prices are nothing special. There is a blond woman who actually told our kids they could not play Marco Polo in the pool. She also insisted we return all of their substandard play equipment to the locker at 530 because it was the rule (posted nowhere…) No one at this desk has any conception of customer service or gives a flip if you ever come back again. However after 530, no one is there to tell anyone not to bring their dogs, tell the old folks not to yell around the pool. The beach is thin and full of rock. Be prepared to drive for a quality beach experience. In all you might be happy here if you are happy with minimal service, small rooms, and a neat lawn. My guess is you could do better somewhere else.

Room Tip: An OK place if you don't plan to spend too much time in the room, are not claustrophobic, are ge...

Aloha Brent, I'm glad you found our central location and grounds nice. The Maui Sunset is one of the very few condos right on the water in central Kihei. Just want to clarify a couple of your points. The one bedroom two bath condos are considered very large for Maui at 700 sq feet plus private lanai view deck of 112 sq ft. There is no free daily breakfast however an island orientation is offered daily for newly arrived guests and they provide a simple snack of local fruit, baked treats, and coffee. Its true Maui Sunset is a limited service condominium property. The front desk offers key service only, versus a hotel where you will find lots of attendants and lots of $$$ spent on extra's. Marco Polo or other loud games are disruptive to other guests, there are many other games to play in the pool.
I do hope you return to Maui Sunset and investigate the many options available you won't find a better value for the dollar in central Kihei.

LOCATION: Maui Sunset is located on the oceanfront in central part of Kihei (though when speking of Kihei, "central" has only geographical meaning). Between the hotel and the ocean lies Waipuilani Park - a nice place with tennis courts. Hotel's lawn is beautifully manicured and literally asks to take off one's shoes and walk barefoot. There is not much of shopping in walking distance, but several shopping plazas, one with Safeway supermarket is a few minutes drive away. For more serious shopping, like Walmart or Costco, one has to drive to Kahului. Parking at the hotel was never full, but parking spots are rather small.

ROOMS: Maui Sunset is a condo community, so each unit is as good as its owner wants it to be. Numbers on each floor run from 1 to 23, with 1 being farthest from the ocean and 18-23 offering prime oceanview. Ground level units offer additional benefit of stepping out directly to the lawn. Units have either 1 or 2 bedroom, and while sufficient, they are not very spacious by today's standards. Units have only wall/window air conditioners (but I personally don't think A/C is really needed there).

SEA/BEACH: The strip of sand in front of hotel is very nice to walk to and spend some time there. Unfortunately this beach is not good for swimming - water is shallow and bottom is rocky. There are no good swimming beaches in walking distance either. On the other hand, beautiful beaches of South Kihei (like Kamaole I, II, III) are 5 minutes away by car. Hotel also has a pool and hot tub, but unfortunately I never visited them.

FOOD: Hotel's pool has a poolside bar, which I never visited and can not comment on it. At a condo community like this, people are expected to buy groceries and cook at home. And having breakfast on room's lanai is priceless!

STAFF: We never had to contact staff or property management during our stay. But I think groundskeepers do an excellent job.

Overall, this hotel offered very nice and relaxed feeling. We also stayed at Honua Kai in West Maui, and while that hotel is in a different league (and did not disappoint us in any way), we'd rather return back to Maui Sunset.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms (1XX) are very convenient for kids (and adults too).

Aloha! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at Maui Sunset. Its great to see you found the value in our ocean front walking beach location. Yes! Next time skip the expensive hotel and maybe spend those saved dollars at on a convertible.

Our stay in march was 12 great days, we were celebrating our 25th anniversary, wanted something different than Mexico. The condo B211 we were in was very nice and comfortable but could of been cleaner and updated, the grounds were beautiful as was the view of the ocean and sunsets. Once we got our bearings of Kihei this property is a great location close to all the amenities, Long Drug Store and Safeway. We found the best restaurant for us as seniors was Ruby Tuesday awesome food and salad bar, Robert as a server was amazing, besides giving us awesome service he told us about some of the history of Maui, I can not comment on the pool was never there, to many other place to check out in Maui.

Aloha! Hope its not your last trip to Maui! Congrats on the anniversary. I've had your condo inspected and we've made some changes to make it cleaner on arrival, also some recommendations to the owner for future updates.
Mahalo and hope to have you back soon.

Stayed at the Maui Sunset for 10 days in December. For location and care of grounds, this place can't be beat. Landscaping and pool area are pristine. Every evening we sat by the beach and watched the sunset with others staying at the condos. The beach on the other hand is disappointing. There is a small strip of beach, but you can't go out and swim in the surf because of water clarity and rocky sea floor. Also there are many year round residents, and a few in particular where actually rude to the weekly condo renters. The room was nothing great. Furniture, carpet and drapes were worn and outdated. This condo is 2 bedrooms with 2 baths and was pretty large in size, with updated bathrooms. View from the lanai was beautiful with a great ocean view. If your looking for a place to call home base, to explore the island and to come back and take a swim or hot tub, this is a good place. If your looking for a beach property with swimming and beach activities, then you will have to look elsewhere.

Aloha! Thank you for taking the to posting a review. Its great that you enjoyed our location and the care our property takes on the grounds. Our beach is best for walking and wading, mostly sand with bits of coral as you go out. If it were as nice as Wailea they prices for condos would be triple and most likely over developed. I have taken steps to address the items inside the condo, including a full and deep professional cleaning of carpet and furniture and new drapes. On your next trip please be sure to let us know so we can take immediate action if our staff missed anything.
Hope to have you back soon to enjoy the views and central location to all of Maui's best.

This was my 4th time going to Maui and I have to say Maui Sunset was awesome. Quiet, clean beautiful grounds. I highly recommend it! We will definitely stay again! The location was great not to close to downtown but not to far.

Aloha! Looks like you found the Aloha in Maui Sunset. Thank you for sharing how our condo resort has the best grounds in Kihei. We may not have the beach of the Grand Wailea, but our lawns and premium condos give it a run for the money.
Hope to see you back again soon.

I would rate Maui Sunset at 4 stars. The building is about 40 years old but the grounds, pool area and location are excellent.

We stayed in room B220, a privately owned, 2 bedroom 2 bathroom unit that I would rate as 2 stars, but mostly for the great sunsets.

First the good; Air conditioners work well, ice maker in fridge makes plenty of ice for small cooler, and the view from the lanai is beautiful.

The not so good; Most of the inside looks to be the original from the 70's. Kitchen needs new cupboards and countertops. The furnishings are old and outdated. The queen bed mattress should have been replaced 10 years ago, if you need back support to get a good sleep, you aren't going to get it. When we pulled the pillow cases off to wash the bedding, the pillows are disgusting. The ensuite is also in need of a complete renovation.

The quality of the little bit of work that has been done is laughable at best. paint slopped over door casings, towel bar, shower curtain rod, switch plates.... a $2.00 roll of masking tape would have been a good investment.

It's too bad some owners do not keep their condos up to at least a minimum standard. Make sure you check out the units as much as possible before renting from a private owner at the Maui Sunset. Some of the condos are in excellent condition and totally renovated, while other owners have done little if anything to their units.

I would stay at the Maui Sunset again but I'll do a little more homework next time.

Aloha! Thank you for taking the time to respond, I do hope you contacted the owner or their island contact regarding the condition of the room. At least the view was great!? The Maui Sunset does have the best kept secret in Kihei, the grounds. Grass like a putting green, and flower's blooming all year.
With the large condos having 2 bathrooms, and a full kitchen its more difficult to maintain and tougher to keep clean. A professionally cleaned and outfitted condo may be the best option for a return trip.
