“I would come back!”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

We enjoyed our stay at the palms, and would definately come back! We found this part of Wailea to be more low key and made for 'living' and less 'resort' style than west maui! The best quiet beach is a 10 min walk from the palms. You definately need a rental car to get to safeway for groceries and to tour the island.
Our one bedroom suite was incredibly spacious and had a huge lanai. It could be slightly updated in decor- but that doesnt effect anything for comfort. The unit could have provided items such as coolers for the beach or zip loc bags for packing snacks etc. I recommend packing spices etc if you plan to do your own cooking.
I believe the 100$ cleaning fee should be included in the room rate instead of an additional charge at the end.

The only major complaint i have was customer service. While everyone was friendly, they could have been more accomodating for people with late flights. We just spent thousands to stay there.. I think you can forfeit a room so we could shower before our 11 pm flight. Charging us an entire room fee for a 30 min use is fairly greedy- considering how much we just spent. Our room was being used that day so just find somewhere else instead of telling me to shower - in public- at the pool.

Aloha JD. Mahalo for taking the time to provide your review of our property. I appreciated your observation that our vacation rental condos are comfortable accommodations for those who want space as well as value being able to take care of themselves. I'm pleased to hear that you will be back.
I'm glad that you brought up the new policy about checkout cleaning charges as we want guests to know about this and I'm confident that you will find that this fee is going to become the new norm for vacation rentals.
I'm regards to a late checkout and/or a hospitality suite, please understand that many of the mainland flights from Hawaii are 'red-eye' flights and we certainly understand your interest in being comfortable while enjoying your valuable time on Maui. The challenge for management is that the condos are individually owned and we have a responsibility to be fair to the owner whose unit cannot be cleaned and then used for a possible arrival. We enjoy being accommodating and friendly and to do as much as we can, but we are a small property and are not able to have cleaning staff on property into the evening.
Mahalo for your understanding. Matt Swartz

This is more of a question, not a review. I have been looking for a review for the ocean view room villa. My family and I will be checking in on the 19th and would like information on these villas. After many years of planning this trip I'm excited to now be able to provide the experience to my family I did 20 years ago. Has anyone stayed in the ocean view units? How are the views, units (updated?), are the upstairs units better for views and the breeze?

Aloha dvslra. It is fun to hear your enthusiasm for your upcoming trip and we trust that it will be as memorable as the last time. Our Ocean View units are popular and it does look like we are sold out for your arrival date in both one and two bedroom units. However, in regards to your questions, I can add that the beauty of condominiums is that they are all different and I am confident that we will have something that you will enjoy. Not only are they decorated differently, the location on the property is a factor for sun/shade and breezes. We trust that you will be pleased with the unit that you were assigned to, but if it isn’t the right fit for you, the good thing about renting with us is that we will have options for you to consider. We look forward to your arrival and if you have any other questions, fell free to give us a call at 808-879-5800. Mahalo. Matt Swartz

At the end of a busy day, this was the perfect place to quiet the mind and rest the body. The pool and hot tub (could be hotter) were relaxing, the atmosphere was serene, the neighbors were all quiet and respectful. Only the frogs were noisy!

Room Tip: We were fortunate to be upgraded. We were 3 adults in 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. It worked out well.

Aloha Barbara.
I like your the title to your review as ‘retreat’ is a good word to summarize an experience here at the Palms at Wailea. I have also heard ‘oasis’ and that too communicates our hopes for the visitors to our lovely resort. I also enjoyed hearing that we were able to upgrade you as it does give us pleasure when we are able to exceed someone’s expectations. Thank you for your review. Matt Swartz

Our family of 5 spent a week at the Outrigger Palms at Wailea from April 22-29, 2014. We stayed in unit 2302 - a 2 BR 2 Bath Deluxe Garden Villa. We loved every minute of our stay there. The condo was spacious and very comfortable for 5 adults. The kitchen was very nice. It had almost everything we needed. I agree with a previous reviewer that it needed a few quality sharp knives in the kitchen though. We had a nice big living room and dining room. We kept the windows open all the time and enjoyed the ocean breezes and bright sun. The master bedroom was very large with a king-size bed and big windows - it was very bright and breezy. The second bedroom is pretty small, but adequate. That is really the only room that might have needed to use the air conditioning at this time of year. The sectional couch in the living room was very large and provided a nice queen size sofa bed. The lanai was quite large. Part of it is in the sun and part is shaded and it had a big dining set and gas grill. We ate all of our meals out there. The garden view surrounding the lanai was lovely, and we could see the ocean and the mountains over the tree tops. The owner provided beach chairs and boogie boards - which we enjoyed every day. The complimentary high speed wireless internet was very useful, as one of my sons was able to do a video conference call presentation from there.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. MK, the concierge, was great to work with. She booked excursions for us and always managed to find discounted prices for us. She also made dinner reservations for us and was full of suggestions on where to go and what to see.

We tried different beaches and enjoyed all of them. Makena State Park (Big Beach) was great. Poolenalena Beach was small, but lovely. There were 2 weddings there while we were there. Polo Beach was very nice too, as was Kamala Park and the Kamaole Beaches. The closest beach to the condo is Keawakapu and is within walking distance. The entrance to the beach is easy to miss, but it is a lovely beach with showers.

Each unit is individually owned so they can have different furnishings. This unit was very nice. It had a Japanese decor which was a bit dated, but everything was in good condition. This unit sits in an area away from the road, so we could leave the windows open all the time and not have to deal with noise. We had a great stay here and would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: Ask for a unit that does not sit along the main roads. I like the second floor units - better breez...

Aloha to Anne from Michigan.
I was pleased to hear that you enjoyed your time here and that you were happy with your unit. All of the condos are individually owned and to that degree are all different. The owners of this unit will be pleased with your review and will also take some sort of pleasure knowing that you were so appreciative of their choices. Additionally, it is also always nice to hear comments about service from the staff as we do offer more than accommodations. Mahalo for your thorough review of our property as I’m sure the interested Tripadvisor readers will benefit from all of your knowledge and tips.
Mahalo.

Our family of 8 stayed here for 8 nights April 19 to 27. Three generations of family including two young children 6 and 4 yrs. We had two of the two bedroom-two bath garden view villas (units 103 and 104) which were one on the ground floor and one on the second floor above. We loved the view and especially the sunsets! The resort grounds were immaculate and very beautiful. It was a couple of blocks from the beach and a quick drive to restaurants and shopping.

The units were very large. Airconditioning in the master bedroom and good fans elsewhere. The second bedroom had twin beds with a sliding door as a wall - this can be a little noisy if you want a sleep-in as this opens onto the main living room. One bathroom had a full tub-shower and the other bathroom had only a shower. The patios were large and we used the BBQ several times. It was nice not to have to eat out every day. We also appreciated the stackable washer and dryer with a couple of packets of detergent.

We all enjoyed the pool especially the kids. It was not too deep (3 to 4 feet) and we spent many hours there. No trouble getting lounge chairs. The hot tub was a little too warm for our liking.

MK the concierge was extremely helpful and gave us great advice on tours. We booked a deep sea fishing trip, a luau at the Grand Wailea and a snorkelling trip to Molokini and Lanai.

Overall a terrific place to stay. Yes, some of the appliances and bathroom fixtures could be upgraded but we thought overall it was good value.

The Palms was a very quiet and relaxing place. All the staff were excellent, desk and concierge [Monica and Chica, great!, also maintenance man]. Booked as disabled but lots of steps without rails inside, bathroom dangerous, toilet too low, pool dangerous with all the steps, getting from car to inside was difficult.
Unit 1207 is a bit tired, broken beach chairs left, broken fan cords,no reading lamp or table beside bed.
Friendly birds, wonderful garden.
Couldn't sleep in second bedroom NO AC [can't believe that in Hawaii]. Furniture and kitchen contents need upgrading
Had a great time with friends.

Room Tip: Ask for a plan to locate your unit. Ask about view.

Mahalo for providing comments about your experience here. I was pleased to hear that Chica and Monica were able to assist you and make your stay more enjoyable. Additionally, the Tripadvisor readers will also appreciate your notation about some of the limitations on the physical nature of our property as it was not designed very well to accommodate guest with special needs. For example, although some units may not have any steps to get to the unit, all units have 2 steps down inside the unit. Please know that we are happy to do all we can to assist and information is usually the most helpful.

We stayed in unit 2302 from April 12-20. This unit is overlooking the trees and the ocean. Great view! The unit itself is spacious, a two bedroom "Garden Villa Deluxe". Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, full kitchen.
Overall we were very happy with the unit. This property is definitely a little older and in need of some updating though. Carpets need to be cleaned, but overall a very pleasant experience.
The concierge, Chica, was fantastic. Helpful and knowledgeable. I encourage anyone staying here to seek her out before booking your tours. She saved us money and pointed us to better tours than we might have picked.

A suggestion for the owners: better kitchen utensils. Seems like a small thing, but when you are doing a lot of cooking in the unit, this unit had very limited sharp knives for cooking and no tongs for the barbecue.
Also, the beds seem old. Time to update the mattresses.

Would I stay here again? Absolutely.

Room Tip: Garden Villa Deluxe. Pay the $20 for the air conditioning.

Aloha Chris.
I would like to thank you for your candid review of our property and your experience here at the Palms of Wailea. I was pleased to hear that you were happy with your unit but also heard your nudges in regards to the care of the unit. We do struggle with lighter carpet and need to stay on top of this one. In regards to kitchen and BBQ utensils, the readers can know that we do have additional supplies on property and we are happy to provide them if this was over-looked in our inspection process. I was also pleased to hear that Chica was able to compliment our beautiful island by identifying some prized activities as well as assist with cost savings. I know that Chica and MK enjoy what they do and guests will benefit from their knowledge.
Mahalo for your feedback and we look forward to your next visit. Matt Swartz
