“Big disappointment!”
Reviewed 12 February 2014

Have wanted to stay at Kula Lodge for quite some time now. Last year, the lodge was sold out for the dates we wanted, so this year, we made sure our reservation was made well in advance. Upon arrival, we asked the bartender where to check in, was told to wait at the podium and the manager approached to check us in. There was no greeting of hello or welcome, no smile, no sense of hospitality or spirit of aloha. We were asked our name, asked if we were previous guests, signed our credit card receipt, then told to follow the manager to our cabin. The room was dark, all the curtains were drawn, he explained the heater and humidifier, gave us our key, and left. Rustic is an apt description, maybe you can stretch that to cozy. This was the smallest cabin and least expensive, which we knew, but the location was near the parking lot of the Marketplace store and backside of the kitchen, so we heard the car traffic and in the morning, the delivery trucks woke us up. Kula is lovely, the view from the dining room and garden is wonderful, the fireplace in the restaurant is really nice, but the manager did not give a good example of hospitality, which would make you less critical of the room's shortcomings.

Room Tip: Don't reserve "chalet" 5--has no view and it's right next to the parking lot and d...

We stayed at Kula Lodge for one night in January. Chalet #4 is a cute rustic cabin. Comfortable except that Hawaii was going through an unusual cold spell and we were cold all night despite wearing our jeans to bed and using all the blankets.

The Lodge is a very convenient place to stay if you want to visit Haleakala for a couple of days. We flew in to Maui, dropped our bags in our cabin, and drove under an hour to the summit to see the sunset. The next day, after we checked out, the staff kindly agreed to hold our bags while we hiked Haleakala.

Meals at the Lodge are hearty and served by friendly staff.

Would recommend the Lodge if you want to visit Haleakala for several days. Also recommend figuring out how to keep warm at night (e.g. more blankets, more layers) and bringing to Kula food and water for the hikes.

We almost didn't stop here because of the mediocre reviews. So glad we did. It is a great spot, with good service and fresh local food. It was a chilly morning and we walked into to a lobby with a fire going, so were immeditaley cozier. As others have noted, the view is great, we really wanted to come back for wood oven pizza on the patio later, as it looked kinda perfect, but could not fit it in.

Our breakfast was well prepared and obviously made from local ingredients. I love homemade corned beef hash, so I was a happy girl. The prices were very reasonable, so not sure why others were saying they were high...but maybe we were just jaded after paying the prices at the Westin in Ka'anapali. Here's a tip....my kids ordered the silver dollar pancakes off the ala carte menu with a side of fruit and there were five good size small pancakes...very yummy..so plenty of food for a good price. The coconut syrup was AMAZING...I was licking it off my kids plates. My kids still talk about this place.

Overall a great breakfast. My husband had the sunrise breakfast and he was fine with it. My corned beef breakfast was great, and the breads were fabulous. The view was breathtaking, you concede to west shore and the north shore at the same time.

The restaurant has a fantastic location, and the view is well worth it to spend some time here. Eric (our waiter) was very friendly and very helpful. Food was really good and the prices are acceptable.

We stopped here as we were traversing the volcano - and the views are breathtaking. Every table has a fantastic view, and the food was quite good. It sits at around 3,000 feet so they had a fire going as we walked inside -- a nice change from the beach scene. The gardens surrounding the property are beautiful and we saw some plants we've never seen before. We will definitely go back.

So my room was clean, but old. I stayed here for easy access to the crater, which I got.

No air- the room was unapproachable during the day, like sitting in an oven. It cooled off really well at night and was almost chilly in the morning, but don't expect to be in your room before sundown.

No view - I'm 3500 feet above sea level and all I can see is a parking lot and trees?! Come on!

Pricey food, and they are a monopoly - They've got the only restaurant for 25 minutes out. Expect to lose weight, either in your tummy or your back pocket.

I wish I would have booked at a B&b in Haiku or Makawao. More food, better scene, still close to the crater (about 20 min from Kula lodge.)
