“Second visit and we'll be back!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 March 2014

This is a large resort and it can get a little crowded around the pool but the beach is rarely busy.
We were upgraded to an ocean view room which was beautiful and we could whale watch from our lanai.

Pros
Comfortable quiet room, beautiful open air lobby, gorgeous gardens with lush tropical plants and birds everywhere including penguins!

Room Tip: Better view on higher floors.

I loved the location and amenities of this resort. The pool is enough to make you not want to leave. The property is filled with great animals (including African Black-Footed Penguins). Make sure to walk up Kaanapali Beach to the Sheraton for good beach snorkeling.

We stayed at this resort in 2012 for the last week of our honeymoon, and it was wonderful! The lobby is open air, and looks directly onto the pool and ocean. Our room was great - we were upgraded to an ocean view with a balcony. It was great to sit out there in the evenings with a glass of champagne! Plus, the bed faced the ocean, and there was nothing like waking up to palm trees and surf. You can't really swim at the beach at the hotel, but the pool was amazing! Complete with swim-up bar, waterfalls, and a 9-ft slide, we were in heaven. Plus, every hour is a different happy hour. (The bloody Mary's were surprisingly good!) We were always able to find a seat at the pool or in a chair facing the ocean. And, the sunsets cannot be beat!!
Two other benefits of the hotel:
- Great location in Kaanapali! You can walk to many restaurants and shops. There's a nice path that will take you to all the restaurants and hotels in that area or there's also a shuttle that runs to each of the hotels.
- We were able to rent a Jeep on site and drive the Road to Hana.

I read a lot of these reviews and take them all with a grain of salt. I don't know what some expect...but I thought I would share my impressions.

The staff...top to bottom, is the best anywhere. I have stayed at hotels all over the world and the staff is second to none.

The grounds are gorgeous. The attention to detail if awesome and their work on the grounds is unobtrusive. The people complaining about construction noise...I have one question? When should they do it? We stayed in the Napili tower, second floor looking right at the construction. We could still see the ocean...we heard them start about 8, but it was never so loud we couldn't lay in bed and take out time getting up and they were gone by 430. Big whoop, that's progress.

We ate at all the restaurants. Liked all of them equally well. The ahi at Japengo was the best I had all week. The ahi sandwich I had at the Umula poolside restaurant was awesome. The breakfast at Swan Court with all the fresh fruits and fresh breads was perfect...the birds, never bothered us and we ate breakfast 7 times there between 8-10. Not sure what some expected. David, the bartender from Colorado was great. He treated us well and even gave my wife a shot for her birthday. Our poolside waitress, Rhoda was awesome too. We had her a few times there during the week, very attentive and helpful. My wife went to the spa for her birthday and was jello when she got out. She loved it and will definitely do it again. Yes, everything in Hawaii as a whole is expensive. But, it is what you can make of it. There are still plenty of places to eat and things to do that are relatively inexpensive

This is the second time we have stayed at this hotel and I am sure we will be there again. We have been to almost all the islands and stayed at all the best the islands have to offer and this is by far our favorite, or as we have tabbed it, our "happy spot".

Take all reviews with a grain of salt. They all tell their story and the truth is somewhere in between.

Room Tip: If you want to hit a decent beach that's closer than black rock, walk down just past the spa. E...

This property is very beautifully located by the Kaanapali beach in Lahaina. The rooms are large, very clean and with nice comfortable bed and generous numbers of pillows. The fitness room is well stocked with machines and yoga and boot camps accessible to all. We had free internet and bottled waters were provided daily. As a conference attendee, the cost of the room was reduced by the resort charge for the day. But they amply made up for the parking charges and daily tax which came to $60+ daily. On top of that they had porterage charges of $18.00 round trip.

The location as mentioned above is beautiful. You can walk along the mile and a half of the beach with you bare feet. There are a lot of walkers and jogger to keep you motivated. Beautiful pools and amenities but all come with a price tag. Maybe, for some $400+ night is not much but it sure adds up for me.

Room Tip: We stayed in the lahaina - north towers and the lectures were there.

My husband and I stayed for four nights at this hotel near the end of January. While the hotel was beautiful and the view from our room gorgeous, like one of the last reviewers, we thought that our stay was overly expensive, more than $100.00 a night more than we paid at the other luxury hotels where we stayed on Oahu, The Island of Hawaii and Kauai. Perhaps how we feel is at least partially due to the fact that it rained three of the four days we stayed on Maui and so we were disappointed. However, we have a super reason to return ... right? Unfortunately, there was nothing that hotel staff and management could do about the weather, but I am sure that, if it were possible, they would have tried!

We are seniors and we found that the hotel was larger than we would have liked. We had a tremendous amount of walking to do to get to our room, to the shopping area, to the beach and to the restaurants. That was complicated by the fact that the hotel is so open that it rained inside the hotel. The floors in many areas were wet during most of our stay. Although the staff tried to keep the water under control with vacuums, the floors were slippery in places. Also, even when the floors were not wet, we found them hard to walk on since they are slate and uneven. It was not only difficult for us to walk but also damaging to the high heeled shoes of a few young women. An older person who has difficulty walking who would like to stay in this hotel would do well to have a cane, a walker or a wheelchair for getting around. In addition, it would be preferable to use the valet service for luggage since it is very hard to roll luggage on the uneven slate floors in most areas and on the thick carpeting in the wings where the rooms are located.

All that being said, we did enjoy ourselves immensely. The grounds are gorgeous and immaculately kept, the food ... especially the breakfast buffet ... was delicious and The Drums of the Pacific Luau was tremendous, even though most of the show had to be held in the Grand Ballroom due to the inclement weather. We also found almost all of the staff very friendly, approachable and helpful.

Unlike one of the last reviewers, we really enjoyed the birds at breakfast. They were delightful and we felt that they were well cared for by the staff. We especially loved the gorgeous white swans and one black swan that we watched swim in the lagoon very close by. The birds added to the ambience and we found them delightful ... even the hungry little ones!

Would we return to this hotel? Absolutely! As long as we are still able to handle all the walking.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 724 ... about three or four rooms from the end of the wing, closest to the ocean...

We got a very good deal to stay at the Hyatt, so we figured what could be worse than staying a week in Maui. We normally keep a pretty active agenda when we visit Hawaii but wanted to relax this time, which, frankly was very difficult here. Some reasons:

Our room, while a very nice ocean front suite, could not cool off enough. The vents were located behind window louvers (REALLY?) and it wasn't until maintenance removed them that the room cooled down.

Every morning at 7:30 -- beep beep beep went the trucks, bang bang bang went the hammers, CRASH went the rocks.

But worst of all, the oasis -- the pool -- was JAM packed. And I mean PACKED. Chairs COMPLETELY line the pool, literally touching. Then there are chairs lining the outskirts of the pool and in some places there are three rows of chairs. And most get filled very earl in the day. People actually run to find open chairs.

Clearly this means the pool area is too small for the number of guests and the 5' strip of beach is far too small for any use at all.

And forget about if you need shade (as one hotel employee told us "you don't come to Maui for the shade). Well, we DO come to sit in the shade, but unless you get up at 6am and snag a chair or are willing to pay $60 for umbrellas, forget about it.

Positives -- VERY pleasant staff -- except for the clown selling the umbrellas -- especially LaPhena at reception. The rooms are clean and functional and the hotel and grounds are very nice.

Room Tip: Do NOT stay in tower next to construction
