I took my wife and two children (10 &12) on a 12 day vacation to Maui.. we had previously stayed in Kehei but decided to try the Kaanapali strip instead on this trip... here's our thoughts on the hotel..
The location is excellent.. as you can tell from photos posted by other people who have stayed at the hotel it is literally right on the beach.. there is a walk way between the hotel and beach that runs the full length of the Kaanapoli strip.. you can walk to Whalers Village in about 5 mins (shops and restaurants) and for the coffee lovers there is a Starbucks about a 15min walk down the strip also but prices are very high at this location thought.. be warned.. but there is free wifi there if you need it. (there is a Starbucks about a 5 min drive from the hotel that also has free wifi and is more reasonably priced.. ask for directions to Liahana Cannery Mall.
The hotel is definately one of the older properties but we found it to be clean and well looked after.. the pool is average size and was mostly filled with kids when we were there.. there is a small tiki grill and bar where you can charge food/drinks to your room... there is also nightly music and an Hawaiin show on the weekends.. very good and all free..
There is a restaurant on site but we did not try it out.. it was closed when we wanted to go for a late lunch.. there is ample parking at the hotel (self park is $9/day and valey is $12/day).. we opted for self park.. the parking lot has 3 floors so great for loading and unloading luggage if you are on the 1st,2nd or 3rd floor of any of the blocks..
Reception area is smaller than most hotels but has a traditional Hawaiin feel.... there is a couple of shops in the foyer (jewellery and small convenience store).
We stayed at the rear of the Kauai wing (second floor) and had a very good view of the beach from our room..
The only complaints were minor.. the dead bolt on our door did not work and the walls are very thin.. i.e. you can hear pretty much everything in the rooms either side of you..
We would definately stay in this hotel again. the staff were very pleasant and always eager to help and when we left we even got a lay for each of us and the kids.. this is one of the few hotels who still has this tradition..
All in all well worth the money.. the location is excellent.. if you are looking for a 4 or 5 star unit this is not your hotel but if you are looking for a clean,, well maintained unit with friendly staff then this is the best bet on the Kannapoli stip.
