“What a great hotel.”
Reviewed 22 August 2012

I took my wife and two children (10 &12) on a 12 day vacation to Maui.. we had previously stayed in Kehei but decided to try the Kaanapali strip instead on this trip... here's our thoughts on the hotel..

The location is excellent.. as you can tell from photos posted by other people who have stayed at the hotel it is literally right on the beach.. there is a walk way between the hotel and beach that runs the full length of the Kaanapoli strip.. you can walk to Whalers Village in about 5 mins (shops and restaurants) and for the coffee lovers there is a Starbucks about a 15min walk down the strip also but prices are very high at this location thought.. be warned.. but there is free wifi there if you need it. (there is a Starbucks about a 5 min drive from the hotel that also has free wifi and is more reasonably priced.. ask for directions to Liahana Cannery Mall.

The hotel is definately one of the older properties but we found it to be clean and well looked after.. the pool is average size and was mostly filled with kids when we were there.. there is a small tiki grill and bar where you can charge food/drinks to your room... there is also nightly music and an Hawaiin show on the weekends.. very good and all free..

There is a restaurant on site but we did not try it out.. it was closed when we wanted to go for a late lunch.. there is ample parking at the hotel (self park is $9/day and valey is $12/day).. we opted for self park.. the parking lot has 3 floors so great for loading and unloading luggage if you are on the 1st,2nd or 3rd floor of any of the blocks..

Reception area is smaller than most hotels but has a traditional Hawaiin feel.... there is a couple of shops in the foyer (jewellery and small convenience store).

We stayed at the rear of the Kauai wing (second floor) and had a very good view of the beach from our room..

The only complaints were minor.. the dead bolt on our door did not work and the walls are very thin.. i.e. you can hear pretty much everything in the rooms either side of you..

We would definately stay in this hotel again. the staff were very pleasant and always eager to help and when we left we even got a lay for each of us and the kids.. this is one of the few hotels who still has this tradition..

All in all well worth the money.. the location is excellent.. if you are looking for a 4 or 5 star unit this is not your hotel but if you are looking for a clean,, well maintained unit with friendly staff then this is the best bet on the Kannapoli stip.

Room Tip: If you stay in the Kauai wing pick an odd numbered room on any floor above x73.. 273, 373 etc.. this...

The hotel was nice and well kept, but it is probably the most touristic area on Maui. The beach is wonderful and the sunsets spectacular. The hotel offers Hawaiian classes such as lei making, ukulele playing and the art of pineapple cutting or hula dancing which we found very entertaining. There is also live hula music from 6.00 - 9.00 pm every day. The breakfast is ok. On your first day you are invited to a presentation where they show you a powerpoint presentation with a lot of interesting information what you can do on Maui. Our kids loved the beach and did not want to leave. On the day of your departure you can participate in a farewell ceremony where you get to know a Hawaiian song and you receive a candlenut lei.

The title says it all. Stayed August 9th thru the 16th. The location of this hotel was excellent for going to the beach, walking to Whalers VIllage or snorkeling over at blackrock. Had a ocean front room (sunsets were breath taking). The hotel was reasonable priced (best value) and the staff was helpful. The going home ceremony was an extra touch that was fun and educational. I would definitely recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: Pay the extra for ocean front. Well worth it

This was our first trip to Hawai'i and we're ready to go again. We were celebrating two anniversaries and a 70th birthday. Our family of six, including two teenage boys, now feel we have extended "ohana" in Maui and hope to be able to visit them often. (Our experience of the beautiful culture included enough Hawai'ian language that we know "ohana" means family.) We visited other resorts nearby but felt they were too artificial (like Las Vegas?) and KBH had much more Aloha spirit and was better located. Our rooms were lovely, clean and spacious. The staff took excellent care of us and of the hotel without ever being intrusive. On arrival in our rooms we were greeted with champagne since someone had asked about the birthday and anniversary, towels for the beach were always available at the beach-side hut, meals and snacks were good and convenient, and the nightly entertainment always added warmth to the beautiful evenings.

Ill start with we enjoyed our stay and the staff were all friendly EXCEPT the old guy at the tiki bar during the day. He needs to be working in the back somewhere. Everyday this guy is a grump.

The rooms were okay. We were in 486. Ocean front. Worth the extra cost. The rooms were not very clean. At quick glance they were OK but not after you looked closer.

My 6 yr old loved the whale shaped pool. The ocean was too much for her there.

Food was not that good. My experience was mediocre at best. I would recommend the breakfast buffet deal because I'm not sure where else you would go without a lot of hassle.

Tiki grill was good food but very slow.

I would probably not stay here again. But that's mostly because. Been there done that.

Great hotel, very friendly staff. Have been here twice and enjoyed it both times.snorkeling at Blackrock is great. Rooms do need to be updated, but were always clean. With the bar and Blackrock close by it was a great value for what we paid. We will be back!

I enjoyed staying here as I loved the grounds. The grass and all of the different plants and trees made is so relaxing to stay outside even when not on the beach. The hotel was peaceful and the nightly free shows were great. Stay for this luau and you will see the a good show.

The rooms, as is the lobby, are a bit outdated and need a good cleaning too. The rooms have a weird smell. The lobby is scary when you first get there.
Also they charge for a room safe (not much) which is ridiculous especially since you need a place to keep your items secure. Most hotels offer this as an service and they should as well. Also, local calls cost .75 cents. Time to get updated with the times and update the rooms and service and I think it will go a long way to get a better overall rating.

Room Tip: make sure you like it before you stay the whole time.
