We stayed at the KBH for 9 days after looking into quite a few different hotels. There is construction at the 2 hotels I initially wanted to book. I agree with most comments about the bad and the good reviews. The hotel is tired and really needs a renovation. The food is good but not great. There is a strange smell intermittently in the room. The guests tend to be older. The pool is small and simple.
But after saying that, We enjoyed our stay. The ahi burger and mahi sandwich at the Tiki grill were very good. I will say after visiting many hotels for happy hour, we preferred Tom's Mai Tai's to any we had on the island. The staff was friendly and helpful. The grounds are large and beautiful, very relaxing. The nightly free shows are really good. On our last night, there was a family performing that was so talented, the host had a fabulous voice and sang many traditional Hawaiian songs. The entire family performed different traditional dances, even the little ones (so cute).
The fact that the pool is small and simple means there are less children and more older people, which results in a more quiet and less hectic hotel environment.
The location is Fantasic. You can walk to black rock for snorkeling with turtles. The entire shoreline has a walk from end to end, which we did walk quite often. Our observation was that there are many hotels to choose from, and it depends on what you are looking for in amenities and the price you want to spend. We saw some hotels that catered to families with large pools surrounded by slides, and bounce houses on the lawn. We saw hotels crowded with teens and young adults partying. We saw luxury condos with BBQs out front and luxury hotels with massage huts. There is truly something for everyone.
There is a great deal of construction on several hotels which seemed very disruptive to a nice vacation, so I am glad I did not book at those hotels.
I will always compare hotels for price, luxury, and amenities, but would consider staying again.
