We stayed at Maui Kai booking through Donna Bender. We had only been to Hawaii previously on our 30th wedding anniversary and wanted to go again on our 40th. This time we wanted to go during whale season. We could not have stayed in a better place for the view that we had for seeing the whales! We constantly would easily see the whales from our condo. It was amazing. Also, Donna was very helpful in giving us places to eat, places to shop, good souvenir ideas, just to mention a few. I highly recommend staying at Maui Kai for a reasonable place to stay.

I'm so glad you enjoyed your 40th wedding anniversary celebration at Maui Kai! Yes, the whale-watching is spectacular from Maui Kai as you can see in the fabulous photos you posted. It's difficult to leave Maui Kai when the whales are constantly putting on a wonderful show! I'm happy I was able to help arrange your stay and provide you with my favorite places to eat and shop. Let me know when you're ready to come back for another anniversary celebration! Mahalo nui loa, Donna Bender

You can believe all of the positive reviews you read about the Maui Kai! We booked our stay through Art and Sophie Nickel and couldn't have been happier with our choice. We are a couple in our sixties so we appreciated the peaceful and hassle-free atmosphere that this location has to offer. The views are spectacular, the beach is clean and uncrowded, the staff is very friendly and helpful and the barbeque in the pool area was so handy. Our studio unit had everything we needed...comfort and cleanliness being the most important things for us.

If you are looking for nightlife, noise, crowds and confusion this place is not for you, but if you want that it is right down the beach! We found the Maui Kai a perfect place to stay and explore the beautiful island of Maui...we would definitely choose the Maui Kai again.

Room Tip: Choose a room higher than the 3rd floor for the best views, especially of the turtles. Read reviews...

We stayed at the Maui Kai in November for our honeymoon. The photos do not lie - the building itself could not be closer to the water, and at high tide the waves sometimes hit the seawall of the deck in front of the lobby. This makes for incredible, unobscured views that you would pay through the nose for at any of the surrounding, newer resorts. The Maui Kai is right in the middle of resort-ville, but stands almost like an apartment building amid more traditional, expansive resort complexes - it is very different from a traditional resort or hotel in Maui.

First of all - we booked through Art and Sophie Nickels, and they were very friendly, easy to deal with, and made reserving the room very simple. We arranged the reservation over the phone and through email (I think they are based in California?) and the process was seamless. They own a unit in the building and so are invested in your experience a good one.

We stayed in a one bedroom unit on the 5th floor. I will echo other reviews: the building and the unit itself are old and have not been updated in quite some time. Having this expectation will go a long way - we were expecting something more modern, but once we got over that, we had a great time. The Maui Kai seems to have some permanent residents or maybe some very frequent renters, as we noticed little groups would gather on the patio each evening. We were definitely among the youngest people there.

The building and unit, while old, were very clean and we were given new towels frequently by the maid service. The unit had a safe, full kitchen, stereo system, TV, and way more space than a typical hotel room. The beach is RIGHT THERE, and the snorkeling right in front of the Maui Kai was amazing - no need to go down to the more crowded Black Rock, we saw turtles, beautiful fish, and gorgeous coral formations without having to go anywhere.

Overall: if you are looking for a condo-style vacation and are okay having older, outdated accommodations, you can't beat the Maui Kai for the price.

Aloha Theresa,
I'm glad you enjoyed your honeymoon stay and the amazing ocean views. Maui Kai units are individually owned so decor does vary from unit to unit and styles range from traditional to modern. Although our unit was already booked up for your dates, I hope we can get you into 806 on your next visit as it sounds like contemporary Tommy Bahama styling would be perfect for you. Keep us in mind for an anniversary visit as we'd love to have you back to the Maui Kai!
Mahalo,
Art and Sophie Nickel

Wanting something different from the hustle and bustle of a large hotel, we came upon the "Maui Kai" and I'm glad we did. A beautiful studio condo right on the beach and I mean right on the beach!

The condo had everything we needed. Styled with kind of a 70's theme, we felt right at home. Big screen TV, iPod player, blender, Toaster, etc. Everything was there to make our stay enjoyable.

Right across the street is a very nice market so we could stock up and enjoy breakfast and lunch on the fantastic balcony. Everyday besides being treated to a awesome sunset, we were able to watch some absolutely first class surfers riding some good size waves.

There are plenty of nice places to eat. We enjoyed the short walk down to "Dukes" for Mai Tai's and dinner. Everybody is so friendly at the "Maui Kai" the front office and housekeeping was very helpful.

We hope to be back again soon as we feel like we now have our "Go To" place in Maui. We booked through "Maui Kai 806" and the owners Art and Sophie made it a very simple process.

We just returned from Maui with very mixed feelings about our stay at Maui Kai. We read the recent review of unit number 702 and have to agree with the review regarding the quality of that unit. First of all the building is old but is very clean. That particular unit definitely needs upgrading. The advertisement for 806 looks wonderful. They say that all the units are similar in quality. But I definitely disagree. We were disappointed with 702 and would not return to that unit. Granted the view is absolutely fantastic as it would be from any unit. The staff is very friendly and the grounds are very clean. The reception and lobby area definitely needs an upgrade. It is very unfortunate that these areas have not been upgraded as there is much potential at this place.

Be sure if you stay there that you absolutely insist in seeing pictures of the unit you would be renting. We tried to ask for pictures before but they were not sure which unit we would get. We would never do that again we did feel slightly deceived.

We felt it was important to give a review to let other travelers know heads up on this particular unit.

Room Tip: Do not rent 702 unless you were okay with very old accommodations

Thank you for your thoughtful remarks. Each unit in the Maui Kai Rental Program is well appointed and meets the standards required of them. The units are individually owned, therefore the furnishings and décor will differ accordingly. Although a particular unit may not be to your taste, each unit in our program is well-equipped and sparkly clean. We do take reservations on a room “type” basis, but if you prefer to see the room you will occupy, we offer a selection of units that can be guaranteed to you. On our official website look for the “pick a condo” tab. Better yet, simply call our on-site reservation desk and they will be happy to assist you. Aloha

This was our second visit to Maui and our second stay at the Maui Kai. We rented unit # 604 through the on site rental office. The condo was in excellent condition with everything you could possibly need. The folks in the rental office on site were friendly and helpful in every respect.
The Time Marketplace grocery store across the street in easy walking distance was really a nice place with lots of fresh food options. We usually enjoyed our breakfast and dinner out on the Lanai of the condo watching all the whales breeching and the magnificent sunsets. The Safeway grocery store in Lahaina is another option but it is very difficult to park there and entry and exit to the highway is very crowded with traffic.
The Maui Kai has wonderful views that just cannot be beat. Try and get a condo on the fifth floor or above for the best view. Resorts charging much more cannot even come close to the views the Maui Kai has. All the condos are right on the beach facing the ocean.
Eating out on Maui is an expensive endeavor. For any nice restaurant figure $60 and up for two people for lunch and over a $100 for dinner. This is another reason to shop at the market and enjoy your meals on your Lanai! We did a lot of picnic lunches on the beaches up and down the Kanapalli coast.
The Maui Kai also has a nice pool and cabana area for swimming and sun bathing right on the property. A computer is available for printing your air line boarding passes.
The daily maid service was excellent and having the air conditioning was a real plus on the hot days.
The Maui Kai property is well maintained and has newer elevators.
The Maui Kai is an excellent choice all around. We will stay here whenever we are lucky enough to return to Maui.

Room Tip: Try and rent a condo above the fifth floor for the best views.
