“When can we go back!?!?”
Reviewed 19 June 2014

My boyfriend and I had a magical stay at the Maui Kai (606). We actually came away from the trip engaged!! Wonderful facilities (beach access, DVD rentals, pool, hot tub, grill) and we loved our little condo. We spent a lot of time eating and relaxing on the lanai. Beautiful sunsets and views of the islands from the condo. The condo was located in a great area, as well (close to grocery store, downtown Lahaina, snorkeling). We will most certainly be back. Thank you Art and Sophie for a wonderful stay!

-Alexis & Mike

Room Tip: Open Lanai!

Aloha Alexis and Mike,
I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and that Sophie and I were able to help arrange accommodation in one of our ocean front partner units. As you said, you really can't beat the direct oceanfront location and all the amenities. Let Sophie or I know when you are ready for a return visit and we'll get you organized for your next stay!

We usually stay at a resort, but decided to try a condo this time. The reviews on TripAdvisor had rated this as one of the best liked place to stay. The room was clean, well-equipped, and also had a nice kitchen area with just about any utensil you could think of using. The location was excellent. The pool was nice and clean. The staff was willing to help with just about request that was made. Donna Bender was one we contacted about renting the room (we rented 302) and she was able to provide all of the information we needed. She was quick to respond to any questions that we had, and was very helpful from start to finish. We would recommend staying here to anyone and would stay here again.

Room Tip: One small caveat.......the room we rented had a Murphy Bed, some people with sensitive backs might w...

The kitchen in Maui Kai units are fully equipped with a refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, microwave, blender, coffee maker, plates, dishes, glasses, and eating and cooking utensils. The pool area has a jacuzzi, 2 gas barbecues and a cabana with a ping-pong table and a full kitchen. Maui Kai awaits your return! Mahalo nui loa, Donna Bender

We had a wonderful 6 nights at the Maui Kai, unit 1006 it was on the top floor and a really nice condo, we made the booking through Donna Bender who was so helpful and terrific in making the reservations and was full of great ideas and suggestions for our stay, she puts out a local girls guide to Maui which is really a great source of idea's and places to see and go well worth getting one.

The condo was really nicely set out, the big patio doors would open to give you a great open feeling inside the condo, I would have preferred an actually balcony but this was the next best thing. The condo was stocked and ready to go for us, the parking was free, free internet, maid service each day if you wished. It is in a good location and of course it is right on the beach, but it is the view which is great, we got to see a few whales going past. Overall it was a great stay and visit to Maui, I would go back to the Maui Kai again for the price and location.

Room Tip: Higher rooms and ask for a one with a balcony as many are enclosed

I'm happy you had a wonderful time in Maui Kai 1006 and enjoyed the extra indoor space from its enclosed lanai and opening its large sliding windows and screens to bring in the outdoors. Glad you enjoyed the great view and got to see a few whales before their return to Alaska. I'm also glad you appreciated the free daily maid service, free wired and Wi-Fi Internet and free parking that comes with every unit in the Maui Kai Rental Program. When you're ready to return, let me know and I'll be happy to help you. Mahalo nui loa, Donna Bender

Donna Bender, who owns Unit 807, helped us arrange our stay in a studio unit at Maui Kai. My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful stay at the Maui Kai to celebrate our one year anniversary and my birthday. The Maui Kai is a lovely and quaint building tucked away among other larger resorts. We had a beautiful ocean-front room with an enclosed porch and a fully-equipped kitchen. We loved being able to cook our own meals (grocery store is conveniently located across the street) and sit out on the balcony watching the turtles swim by. Tons of other beaches are within walking distance as well. We highly recommend the Maui Kai and can't wait to return again soon!

It was my pleasure helping you arrange your 1-year anniversary celebration at Maui Kai! I'm glad you had a wonderful stay exploring the mile-long stretch of beach next to Maui Kai and took advantage of the fully equipped kitchen to cook your own meals from the large supermarket across the street and enjoy them while drinking in the oceanfront view of sunsets, turtles and the islands of Lanai and Molokai. Please let me know when you're ready to return - I'll be happy to help you again! Mahalo nui loa, Donna Bender

We were here at the Maui Kai for the week of May 17th. The property is well-maintained: nicely-manicured lawns; lobby area; elevators; pool; clubhouse; gas grills, etc. Very clean. The management team was especially welcoming and helpful. And maid service was also excellent.

Staying here will be a very personal experience for you because, being a condo property, each unit is different, i.e., the size, decor, updating, condition, etc.

We stayed in Unit #808, which is a one-bedroom corner condo with an expanded-view of the ocean. This unit was advertised as "Best in Building" on Flipkey. It was pretty-much as advertised and served as our "home base."

Chances are that, if you take a trip all the way to Maui, you're going to be on-the-go most of the time. But we always like to have a comfortable, well-appointed place to collapse, after a busy day. To this point, Unit #808 fit the bill.

Note: on our last day there, my wife happened to speak with a couple checking-out, after a 3-week stay. They commented that their unit was older and not re-modeled. It was not what they expected, so they weren't that happy with their accommodations. Well, you can let this be a warning: You Get What You Pay For! So, if you're planning to book the Maui Kai, do your homework.

Other than that, my only other comment is that the pool area is a bit out-dated. Nice pool and Club House. But older lounge chairs; no cushions and no umbrellas. If you plan to spend serious pool time here, you better bring plenty of sun screen lotion, because any shady area is hard to find - almost non-existant. On the other hand, like I said above, chances are that you're going to be out and about on Maui, and the ocean and beach is literally steps away from the building. That said, we only spent about 3-hours total at the pool.

All things considered: the Maui Kai - given its great location on Kaanapali Beach and close proximity to shopping, restaurants and quality grocery stores - proved to be a very nice place to stay!

Room Tip: Do your homework before booking: each condo is very different!

Stayed at the Maui Kai for the last two days of our trip, after staying at the Westin Ocean Resort Villas for a week. Maybe that was our main mistake, as the differences in luxury, newness, and customer service was a stark contrast between the two. I felt like we had suddenly come down on our luck and now had to stay at a rundown building on the other side of the tracks, or should I say closer to the sewage treatment plant which we smelled quite strongly during both evenings. This condo was just not my cup of tea, and maybe it’s not yours either. I would recommend reading through each of the reviews carefully, particularly the average to below average reviews, because there is probably something there that will resonate with you and will help you decide on how much you want to compromise on during your blissful Maui getaway.

Pros: ocean front view.

Cons:
Old building and old condo (yes, this unit was part of the rental program), with rundown 80s furniture and an equally rundown 80s bathroom.

Our unit was 403 – right in front of the elevator and room where the shared washer/dryer and garbage chute is housed on each floor. So, in the evenings as we winding down for bed, we got to hear the clinking of someone’s bikini clasp (or maybe it was loose change) clanking in the dryer. Then, of course, there was the loud crashing of bottles being thrown down the trash chute.

Surly front desk person named Rowena – Unfortunately, we interrupted her meal, and got the distinct pleasure of watching her wolf down her meal, talk to us in mid-chew, and then wipe with lips and chin with her napkin before proceeding with checking us in. My boyfriend made the mistake of asking if we would get an ocean-front view, to which she gave him a smart-aleck look, waved her hand, and said, “Every view is ocean front” <insert the unspoken, “you idiot for asking”, part here> . I had to charm her a bit before she would no longer be snarky.

Housekeeping made the bed, changed the towels, and took out most of the trash (although they didn’t change out the bathroom trash, which was weird). Be aware that this is all they say they will do – as you will still come home to a sink full of dishes, crumbs on the counter, and the same bedsheets. Just want people to know that housekeeping is limited, so be prepared for it

They do not provide you with the basics, such as coffee or salt and pepper, so make sure you pick some of this stuff up in advance if you think you’ll need it.

You will be jealous of the amenities other resorts have.

Room Tip: Our unit was 403 – right in front of the elevator and room where the shared washer/dryer and garbage...
