“Amazing location”
Reviewed 9 August 2014

Chose this condo after reading all the reviews on trip advisor and so glad I did. Although the room we were allocated- 402 - had not been refurbished recently it was perfectly adequate, clean with comfortable bed and equipped with everything you could need, loads of utensils and kitchen equipment, boogie board, beach chairs, umberella, cool box, even snorkelling equipment. The main reason for staying here is the location,it is literally on the beach and we loved sitting on the lanai eating breakfast or sipping drinks listening to the waves crashing below. The pool is basic compared to a lot of the surrounding resorts but this was fine for us as we spent most of our time on many of the fabulous beaches on Maui.It was nice to have a fully equiped kitchen and BBQ at the pool area which was very clean and well stocked - although we do not normally eat in on holiday we used this facility a few times during our stay and then ate on the lanai.Overall the maui kai is fantastic value for money and we will definately return.I would advise anyone booking from the UK to book through a US website though where they can view the room they are booking as not all condos her are the same.

Room Tip: Book through a website that lets you view individual condos

We celebrated a very special event in our lives at the Maui Kai. Couldn't get any closer to the water! Great views up and down the beach. Sound of waves filling the unit. Great seat for coffee in the morning and wine in the evening. Donna Bender was very accommodating, made herself available whenever we had a question and even helped coordinate a special gift our family members sent us. Thank you, Donna!!! The unit itself had all the comforts of home and was plenty spacious for the two of us.

It was my honor and privilege arranging your special event at Maui Kai. I'm glad you enjoyed your unit's oceanfront view with your morning coffee and evening wine. Maui Kai is built out of concrete block so you can't hear your neighbors - all you hear is sound of the ocean waves! When you're ready to return, let me know and I'll be happy to help you again. Congratulations! Mahalo nui loa, Donna Bender

Loved the location, loved the unit. Staff super friendly. Nice pool, though you might get pool envy when looking at what is next door as you enter your unit. (we just went over for a dip one day though)

We celebrated our honeymoon at the Maui Kai and cannot say enough wonderful things about our visit. It truly is paradise. We booked through Maui Kai 806 owners Art and Sophie Nickel, and they could not have made the process more easier. 806 was unavailable at the dates we needed so they graciously worked with us to find another condo and we chose #403. They were really great and easy to work with, super responsive, and just good people. Everything was as stated: clean, updated, comfortable, and THE VIEW. I doubt you can find a condo closer to the ocean than what is offered at the Maui Kai. Listening to the waves at night and throughout the day is truly a magical experience. We saw several sea turtles from the lanai and even swam with one just a few minutes down the beach in front of Duke's. It was awesome. I can't imagine a better stay and for that matter a better value in all of Maui. All of the staff were genuinely nice and extremely polite. All of them. It was laid back but professional and warm. The pool and hut tub area was nice and relaxing. It even had a fridge for our cold beverages and a really nice grill. We will definitely be back.
Pro's:
-The view
-Clean, updated and comfortable
-Nice amenities (TV,DVD,great WIFI- a must nowadays)
-Easy parking
-Location (walking distance to restaurants (Dukes and Slappy's were our favorites) & grocery store (The Times a short walk away). A few minute drive down to Whaler's Village and Lahaina.
-Beautiful beach (albeit directly in front of the condo is a bit small in width it opens up as you walk down. We enjoyed laying out in front of Duke's the most and walking the entire beach.
-easy booking with Art and Sophie
Cons:
-The ocean directly in front is a tough swim, better off to walk a couple minutes down the beach.
-To get to Duke's via the road you have to walk around the parking lots. It would be nice if you could cut through the Mahana's parking lot but you need an access code to get through their gate. Easy access from the beach though.
-It can be a little windy.

Room Tip: I would avoid the first two floors if privacy on the lanai is a huge concern.

Aloha Mike,
I'm glad you enjoyed your honeymoon stay and that Sophie and I were able to make the booking process easy for you by getting you into one of our partner units at the Maui Kai. Thanks for also posting all the amazing pictures. Let either of us know when you are ready for a return visit and hopefully we can get you counting down to a perfect anniversary as well!

The Maui Kai has 80 units, mostly privately owned, although you can rent directly from the building. You can expect to find more dated furnishings in the units rented out by the building. Owners take more pride in their units which is why unit 1003 stood out – even in the photos. Unit was even better than described or photographed. Top floor – ocean front. This condo building was built before there were rules about how close to shoreline you can build. The result is this hotel sits right next to the sand and from your room you have the 180 degree ocean views and feel like you are on a cruise ship. The unit was updated with beautiful tile, granite and furnishings. The double bed is a murphy bed and the mattress was very comfortable. Our son slept on the pull out sofa. The room had every amenity you can think of – besides full sized appliances including a dishwasher, it had an in room safe, beach chairs, beach towels, snorkel gear, coolers to take the beach as well as spices and some items like tea, coffee, filters, ketchup, sunscreen as well as dishes and pots and pans better than what I own at home. Coin laundry across from the room (only 1.25 per load) and they even has detergent and dryer sheets for you! (You can get quarters from employee in lobby). Across from condo (a short walk) is a shopping center with a Times Grocery store – not as reasonably as Safeway in Lahaina (15 min drive) but it had great take out sushi and other necessities including beer & wine. I would definitely choose unit 1003 again when returning to Maui. We enjoyed eatting on the lanai, using the barbecue by the pool, using the pool hot tub and playing table tennis. The building was very clean and well maintained as well the actual unit. As a corporate meeting planner, I am used to staying in 4 and 5 star hotels but when I vacation, I want a place to plant myself and feel at home. This unit did that for me. Thank you Christine for making our stay so enjoyable!

I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. The Rental Program manages most of the units and all the units are
individually owned including those in the Rental Program. The Program has standards that the owners have to adhere to be a part of the on site management. Our owners take excellent care of their units as well.

My husband and I returned to Maui for our 25th anniversary and had a trip of a lifetime. We stayed at Maui Kai in a studio room #707 and were very happy. The place was kept very clean and we had the perfect view. Breakfast every morning on the lanai was a perfect way to start the day. Staff and workers were always there to make your stay enjoyable. Toni, Betty and Don always had great ideas to make the best of our outings. The location is the best on the beach. You have to walk a little to get a good beach spot but I wouldn't have changed a thing. We also packed up the car and visited many beaches in West Maui. This is a must. Our condo had a cooler, umbrellas and chairs to make our outings so much easier. On the grounds there is are 2 barbeques, a hot tub and a nice pool to relax. Also a nice pool house fully equipped with dishes, a computer, tv and so much more. Thank you very much to all the staff at Maui Kai for making our visit so wonderful!!!

Room Tip: Perfect for families and couples. All rooms have an ocean view.

We booked a condo at Maui Kai through owner Donna Bender. We were familiar with this property as we have stayed multiple times at the resort next door. It was everything we expected and more. Right on the water, beautiful views and all the extras (i.e. boggie boards, cooler, beach chairs, binoculars, etc.). It was perfect! The staff at Maui Kai were terrific. Always friendly and helpful. Before the trip, Donna gave us her Local Girl’s Guide to Maui to take with us to Maui. It provided us with tips on various activities to do, eating out, sights to see, where to have cocktails, to viewing the beautiful Maui sunsets. The guide is a must! Donna took care of everything...it was so easy. We would definitely stay here again!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room above the second floor for fabulous ocean views.

Thanks for trying Maui Kai - I'm glad you had a perfect time! I'm happy you enjoyed the beach gear in your unit. There are several places within walking distance of Maui Kai where you can rent beach gear inexpensively. Please let me know when you're ready to return - the friendly and helpful staff can't wait to see you again! Mahalo nui loa, Donna Bender
