A friend recomded this resort for our honeymoon. But since there is no a/c you must have all windows & doors open for air flow. Which does not allow any privacy. You can hear everyone walking & talking. And starting at 6:00a.m-9:00a.m. EVERY morning the maids & grounds keepers start pushing thier carts on the rocky side walks, which is impossiable to sleep late though. Not to mention having to listen to the conversations between them too! All room doors slam loudly with windows open. They need to have some plastic bumpers added to make them quieter.
The bed was supposed to be a kingsize, but was 2-twin beds pushed together. That we kept falling thur the two of them. The ghosts ants only came out when we turned on the microwave. Kept everything in the ice box.
The hot tub was great! The views are great! Swimming & sun was great too!
Just get a room with a/c.

For someone traveling in their early 20's was great! I woke up to a beautiful sunrise and fell asleep to a spectacular sunset. Rooms are big enough for 1-2 people. The beach is okay, I went there when it was windy, but I got a good tan! Food was delicious and cheap and the staff was very friendly.

We had traveled up from Kaanapalli on our last trip to Maui and wanted to get away from the high rises on this trip and boy did we make the right decision. In Napili, no building can be taller than the palm trees. We came to Napili Kai mostly because when we were here on the last trip and saw how well it blended into its surrounding enviroment and its proximity to great snorkeling beaches. We hoped it would live up to our expectations, well it not only lived up to our expectations by the accomodations, the friendly staff, other guests and the grounds, it surpassed it. We came to spend our 30th wedding anniversary in paradise and to relax and snorkel. We are fairly low keyed people and the Napili Kai was the perfect pick for us.
When we booked with Cheap Hawaii Tickets we were not sure what condo we would get but asked for a ocean front and second floor and would highly recommend that for anyone. We were lucky and got a preferred condo in the Puna II building (room 221).
The view when we walked in and opened the lanai doors just blew us away, ocean everywhere and could be seen from just about anywhere in the room. We spent many hours on the lanai watching whales, turtles and people, great fun. The Puna buildings are out on the rocky point and more quiet than the beach front units which worked out fine for us, no beach, but a short walk on the path gets you to the beach. I have read where some have complained about the accomodations being dated and the ghost ants. The Puna rooms are to be updated this summer but seemed fine for us (we live in house over 100ys. old). The ghost ants were not an issue because we kept everything in the fridge or oven, plus they don't eat much anyway.
The snorkeling in Napili Bay is very good and we saw turtles many times and Kapalua Bay is just a short across the parking lot and the snorkeling is also great there.
Check out Honolua Store in Kapalua and Maui Tacos in Napili for good inexpensive eating options. We had a great time and hope to return to Napili Kai Beach Resort as soon as we can afford it.

I love the Napili Kai. My family started going there over 30 years ago when my mother was a travel consultant with an agency that specialized in Hawaii. Since then, although everything around the hotel has changed dramatically (and horribly in many cases), the Napili Kai has remained virtually the same (not in a bad way). It isn't quite as family-run as it used to be, but when you arrive there is still a warm and friendly feeling--they offer you fruit juice (and they are also very happy to help you get your luggage to your room, in case you are worried about climbing the stairs).

What I love most about the Napili Kai is its location: it's one of the few places on Maui (or on many of the islands) where highrises, speedboats, etc., are not permitted. (In fact the hotel's original management was also responsible for pushing for the anti-development laws that have kept the bay frozen in time.) So, if you really want a real beach vacation--i.e., sunbathing, reading books, swimming, etc.--it is perfect. But if you want night life, sensation, and easy access to other activities, it may not be the best for you. Since all I want from a Hawaiian vacation is relaxation and a little daily exercise, it is just right for me. There are other hotels along the beach, but the Napili Kai was there first and has the best situation. The bay has gentle tides and is perfectly sized for swimming laps (I think that 4 times back and forth roughly equals a mile of open water). The water is almost always beautifully clear at this end and offers plenty of interesting fish and coral reef to examine.

The other reason I love the Napili Kai is that it has the feeling of an old beach club. Every time I go, I meet people who have been coming back there for years (just like my family). This year we went at Xmas, something we've always wanted to do, and the hotel was filled with big family groups and tons of kids. It was really fun to watch their antics every day. At other times, the hotel has seemed quieter and more romantic. Once we saw a couple getting married on the rocks, just a few yards from our room. Everyone on the beach broke into applause. I can't imagine this happening at a big high-rise hotel. I also think it would be a great place for a honeymoon.

Re: amenities: the restaurant has never been all that great--in the past you just had to give in and accept that it was going to be kind of hokey. But on this trip, it seemed greatly improved and we really enjoyed the two dinners and one lunch we had there (order the papaya with crab salad). There is now a Costco by the airport and a local farmer's market where you can get fruit and vegetables quite cheaply. Snorkel equipment and fresh towels are available at the snack bar and I got fins from Snorkel Bob's for $8 for the week. Units can be variable, but this time we had a great one, with newly renovated kitchen and bathrooms. Everything was spotless and well-stocked and the staff is very friendly. I can't wait to go back!

Dreamy place for a perfect honeymoon. Stayed in a beachfront studio 1st floor. If you are looking for a place with the old Hawaii atmosphere and the true aloha spirit this is it. However, no a/c in the beachfront bldg. so you must be able to have doors open for air flow which does not allow for any privacy, next time I will pick a 2nd floor room. (It was afterall our honeymoon.) The place is quiet and relaxed so if you are looking to have your cell phones ringing or a party environment this is not your place. It is a comfortable relaxed casual atmosphere so if you like a 5 star stuffy environment then you should probably book the Grand or Fairmont. Wonderful beach and The Seahouse restaurant with it's perfect sunset views, good food and even better drinks on the property make for an easy dining choice. The only problem we had was leaving! Thanks for the perfect honeymoon Napili Kai!

We stayed at the Napili Kai for a week (Oct 8 - 15) in a ground floor beachfront studio. The room was wonderful, bed comfy and the maid kept it very tidy. Yes there were a few ants but a quick spray by maintenance and we never saw them the rest of the week. The kitchen came in handy for the few meals we cooked while there and the grills on the grounds worked great.

We stayed in room 5. Upon checking in the lady in room 6 (Sandy) popped over and invited us to the building's nightly get together in the pavilion by the beach. We accepted and enjoyed everyone's company each evening as the sun set (I am attaching a picture of one of the best sunsets).

We attended the Wednesday night slack key concert and it was really great. Each day there is a different activity like lei making or putt putt golf (with 50 cent drinks!) or the managers Mai Tai night.

All in all this was a wonderful place to spend a week. The snorkeling in the bay was good, lots of fish and turtles and generally pretty calm.

This may not make a very good base if you plan on doing a lot of venturing out. It is an hour from the OGG airport but the drive is nice. We did go to the Iao needle, Makena beach and the road to Hana as far as the Maui Grown Market (between mile marker 14 and 15). I am attaching a couple of pictures of that. It is the last stop before the long drive to Hana that you can get a picnic lunch put together and they make great sandwiches. You can also get a dog to ride along with you if you miss yours back home!

We will stay at the Napili Kai on any future visits to Maui and highly recommend it to anyone going.
