“There for a night”

My wife and I were at the Westin for a night because Hyatt had overbooked. The Westin provides free internet access as well as free bottled water in your room. They gave us a ocean side view room and it was great. We hung out at the bar and played some pool. Honestly, it's the same as the Hyatt with the exception of free internet and bottled water.

We spent the week at the Westin in Maui during a very rainy spring break. Although it rained most all week, we had a great time, and the hotel was a lot of fun. Our kids loved the pools although they were very cold due to a propane shortage on the island. The entire staff was very friendly and accommodating. The concierge even sent a complimentary bottle of wine to our room when she found out it was our anniversary. The grounds and beach were beautiful! The tropical birds and fish were a nice touch outside the lobby. We loved the close proximity to Whaler's Village shopping center and restaurants since the weather was not always cooperating. The room was a little small, but always clean! It is a great place for family vacations.

We just returned from an 8 night stay at the Westin - the lobby & pools are FANTASTIC - but the elevators and rooms need updating - the elevators smelled horrible! We paid for a Deluxe Oceanfront and ended up overlooking a parking lot of Whalers Village, smelled like cheeseburgers & lots of noise in the AM with trucks - they nicely moved us to a new room overlooking the pool & ocean and gave us food vouchers - breakfast was fantastic as well as Tropica - very lovely! The staff is great - even Room Service was great - they came and picked up the table about an hour later without us calling. - They need to spend some big $ overhauling the rooms - OLD safe - closet door didnt close - we wouldnt go back unless they spent big $$$ to over haul - be sure to say you DO NOT want the rooms overlooking that parking lot!

Trip report from Maui, Hawaii and our stay at the Westin Maui Resort and Spa at Ka’anapali Beach March 24th – 31st. Excuse the rambling and detail but we need to get all this off our chests.

We are a family of 5, mom, dad and three girls ages 9, 4 and 21 months. We typically book a suite or get two connecting rooms to accommodate our family. After serious research we booked the Jr. Suite at the Westin. The Westin website states that the suite is 845 sq. ft. with separate bedroom and living rooms. The confirmation we received stated that the room had “dramatic” ocean views. The rate of $650/night was worth it considering the size of the room and the “dramatic” ocean views. After reading negative reviews here from people who I believe stayed in the Jr. Suites I was concerned about the views and size of the room and called the hotel directly. Both times they confirmed the sq. footage and “dramatic” views.

Upon arrival I asked Rebecca at the front desk about our room and she wasn’t overly thrilled. After I told her we were a family of 5 she thought we might be cramped. I was confused because the room was 845 sq. ft. She proceeded to show me a map of the room with sq. footage which showed the room is really less than 475sq. ft. Rebecca told me they were probably including the sq. footage of the lanai’s (balconies). I asked her about the views and she said it was on the 2nd floor overlooking Whaler’s Village and that it was not a great view, I was furious. She stated that she had nothing better available other than the luxury suite at $1100/night. She gave us the keys and told us to check out the Jr. Suite and come back if it was not acceptable. When I complained to Rebecca she went to talk to the manager. When she returned she said she was giving us the Luxury Suite for the same price as we had booked the Jr. Suite. It was right next door to the other room but even though it was on the 2nd floor this room did have dramatic ocean views (see pictures) and was approximately 1110 sq. ft large (not including balconies) and was amazing. The room had a treadmill, 3 lanai’s all with stunning views, dining table, huge master bath and a separate hallway half bath. We were truly satisfied at this point. It was large enough where our two older daughters did not have to sleep together. We ordered a cot for our 4 year old which by the way is more comfortable than the pull out sofa!

The Westin made this right, however, even Rebecca stated that she wished the booking agents at Westin would be more honest about the rooms and I agree whole heartedly. Had she not been able to fix this problem we would have been livid. As a matter of fact while I was down working this out I had my wife on the phone with the Hyatt next door where we have stayed in previous trips. They were ready to accommodate us. Even though Westin got this right in the end, I am extremely disappointed that it had to go that far to start with. I felt totally deceived!

The pools are great and were a little chilly like everyone on here states but I find that refreshing. We are very disappointed about the fact that this property only has one Jacuzzi and that you have to be 16 or older to go in it, come on. Twice our kids were asked to leave the Jacuzzi. Look, kids love Jacuzzi’s at least ours do and with all the rain and the chilly pool they wanted to warm up. It is ridiculous that they only have one Jacuzzi and they won’t let kids in it. This made my wife livid. We never had problems getting towels or seats by the pool but it was raining most of the time we were there so I am sure this may have been different had everyone been out by the pool. Only committed swimmers were out most days willing to swim in the rain or stormy conditions.

The elevators in the beach tower of this property had foul odors. Not sure what is up with that but we were overwhelmed by the foul odors in at least two of the elevators and this disgusted us each time we went to and from our rooms. Thank goodness we were only on the 2nd floor. We found the staff very friendly and accommodating. The food on the property was nothing special. There is no indoor restaurant so all the rain made it not fun to eat on property which we really only did for breakfast. The breakfast buffet is expensive $25/adult, kids eat free but it was very good.

Some people complain about the $18 daily resort fee but in my opinion it’s worth it. For this you get free internet, free parking, a couple bottles of water each day and some other stuff that made it worth it for me.

All in all the property is showing some wear and tear and needs some updating. The location is fabulous and the property is very keiki (kid) friendly with the exception of the Jacuzzi. The health spa is very nice with some great machines for working out. My wife and I both had massages and they were both good. The spa has great facilities. We absolutely wouldn’t stay here again based on the deception about the rooms and needed repairs to the property. Probably we will not consider another Westin property for quite a while because of the deception.

Some other highlights of the trip included road to Hana, Maui Ocean Center, Big Beach, Old Lahaina Luau, Kealani Kai Boat Excursion, Pa’ia Fish Market for Fish and Chips, Pacific O’, Nick’s Fish Market, Ruths Chris Steak House, Kimo’s, Hula Grill, Leilani’s and much more.

We decided on Westin Maui for our honeymoon. What a great choice! The staff was very nice from the get-go. Right off the bat they provided us an upgraded room which allowed us to see Ka'anapoli Beach.

Room - Our room was nice and spacious, no complaints, bed was heavenly.

Pool & Beach - A lot of kids present, meaning the pools were full. A perfect place for families. The beach was nice. I believe you have to pay extra to get beach furniture. Perfect sun sets.

Food - The restaurants located at Westin were good, but expensive. We highly recommend going into Lahaina. A nice drive south of the hotel for food and shops. Bubba Gump Shrimp and Cheeseburger in Paradise were awesome. Also, food & shops just north of the hotels. A Luau is another great idea. I believe we went to the Hyatt's.

Westin offered a nice workout facility & spa. We took part in both.

Sometime during your visit you will be asked about their timeshare villas. Our concierge advised us to go sit through the 1-1.5 hr sales pitch and just say no. Thats what we did and walked away with $100 credit towards any Westin Maui service(food, spa, or whatever) and they also provided us a 50% off coupon for any future Westin visit. We thought it was worth our time.

To end this review, I would recommend this Westin to anybody. Everyone is laid back. Weather was nice. Rent a car and tour the island. Don't forget about helicopter tours!

Well, it started with very unpleasant conversation with the front desk. We booked a full bath room but they told us it's not available so they gave us a room only with shower with same price. They did not accomodate us for this and the front desk was so rude about it. Next day, we got to move to another room after speaking with manager. But no appologies. The room was ok over all and the entire hotel was just ok. They don't have good restaurant but only casual one. This was totally not our taste. What happened to Westin. We usually like the hotel chain..

We just got home from our second trip to the Westin Maui (first time was 12/04). This time, we brought our 3 mo. daughter with us. We stayed in the cheapest room(mountain view) but it was actually more enjoyable than the pool/garden view room we stayed in last time. (The pool/garden view rooms are LOUD due to the thundering waterfalls, screeching parrots, and kids playing in the pools.) The room size was fine for the 3 of us. We reserved a crib but our baby slept so well in her stroller that we didn't need the crib after all which saved a lot of space. The biggest drawback is the lack of closet space. There is a TV armoir with 2 deep drawers and a narrow space to hang about 5 pieces of clothing, but nowhere to store luggage. We packed several small pieces of luggage that we stuffed UNDER THE BED so we didn't have to trip over them all the time. The bedside tables also have 2 drawers each- perfect for smaller items (diapers/wipes, socks + underwear, bathing suits, baby clothes etc).

We used the hotel's Nanny service (Nanny Connection) so we could go out by ourselves for dinner. We recommend Denise HIGHLY. She is FABULOUS! She has been taking care of kids on Maui for 12 years and is totally trustworthy and experienced. If you are travling with a baby, I suggest reserving Denise in advance so you can have some time for yourselves.

Between our two trips to Maui, we've tried many of the Island's top rated restuarants. Our favorite is actually the Westin's own Tropica. The food is GREAT! We had the crab and shrimp cake appetizer (absolutely fantastic) and the surfing goat cheese flat bread (fabulous) and the seafood paella (one of the best paella's I've had- no joke). And if you can grab a table at sunset, you'll have an unrivalled setting too.
