“Can't wait to return to Maui”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 September 2006

We spent our honeymoon at the Westin in Maui - it was fantastic and we can't wait to go back.

Some highlights:
- The waves were great (and strong) in front of the Kaanapali Ali (next door to the Westin).
-Contrary to over reviews we've read, we liked the breakfast buffet. It was expensive at 25 per person, but there was SO much to eat (and it was great after the long flight). We didn't do this every day - there is a stand with pastries that we bought from the other days.
-The pools were awesome - and my husband loved the waterslide. I thought it would be kids-only using the waterslide, but there were a lot of adults using the bigger one.
-Our room was in the beach tower facing Whalers Village. We LOVED it. View was amazing (even though we were one of the farther rooms from the ocean). The room was bigger than the ones in the other tower, and had a full closet. It was clean and nicely maintained. And had plenty of room (bathroom was good sized too). DIdn't notice too much noise from Whalers Village.
-SO nice to be nice to Whalers Village. We enjoyed Leilani's and the Rusty Harpoon for meals. We did the food court a few times too - it's nothing special, but gives your credit cards a much-deserved break.
-Close to Lahaina - we loved going to Lahaina. Tons of neat shops, souvenir stores, drug stores for snacks, water, gatorade.
-The daily hotel fee (which I read a lot of people complain about) covers self-parking, 2 bottles of water daily, internet in the room (if you happen to have your laptop - we forgot it). We didn't think it was too unreasonable.

Things that we were not impressed with:
-Self parking - there is not very much of it. It is hard to get a spot unless you come back in the middle of the afternoon or before dinner as more people are gone during the days. It is impossible to find spots if you are coming back from dinner. Luckily, if the lot if full, they will valet your car for free.
-Housekeeping - they didn't come until late afternoon (like 5), and somedays did not come at all. We didn't want to remind them, as they did such a poor job anyways. They barely pulled the covers up on the bed (see picture attached). I am a frequent business traveler, and was appalled at the maid service. They forgot to take dirty towels on the ground by the sink, and didn't pick anything up.

Overall, the Westin was great - there were a few downfalls, but nothing that would prevent us from coming back. We definetly wished we would have stopped at Costco after arriving (its right by the airport) for water, gatorade and snacks. But there's always next time. :)

The good:

Westin Maui Resort And Spa is in a great location with a nice beach and very large multi-tiered pool. There are many activities that can be booked right off the beach in front of the hotel. It is also right next door to a fairly large outdoor mall called Whaler's Village, which has shops, three sit down restaurants, and a couple of fast food operations.

The bad:

The management and most service workers at the hotel have an "it's not my problem" mentality.

When you call at 4pm to ask why your room wasn't cleaned, don’t be surprised when you are informed by the person on the other end of the line that it is not their fault because their shift just started. There is no team mentality with the management or the service staff.

Expect to get a lot of attitude from the towel distribution staff and don't think you are getting a towel from them past five when they close, even though the pool shuts down at ten.

Don't be surprised when your a/c or balcony door do not function. Of course you will be informed that the hotel is planning renovations to "begin very soon."

Expect to contend with tons of kids.

This hotel is not up to Westin standards. I have stayed at Westins all over and this is the worst.

Go to Maui, you will have a great time, but stay at the Fairmont or the Hyatt next door, they are both superior.

We just got done with a 5 night stay at the Westin resort. As many of the reviews said, the resort could use some updating (carpet, paint, torn wallpaper), but it's not horrible. They brought us a roll-away bed which made it much easier to fit a family of four (or five) in the room since the double beds are pretty small.

The pool area is very nice but you better get up early if you want to make sure you can get a lounge chair, and you better get up really early if you want a chair under an umbrella. The last day, we got up at 6:30 and got the very last set of chairs under the umbrella. I think most people got towels the day before and just went out early and set the towels on the prime chairs, and then came back later in the day to use them. Also, they never checked our wristbands, so I'm not sure you need to even bother with those.

Having Whaler's Village shopping mall next door is great if you've got teenage kids. If/when they get bored, you can just send them next door to shop or get ice cream or pizza. Snorkeling at the Black Rock outside the Sheraton is great (although expect it to be crowded), and that's just a 1/2 mile walk down the beach.

So its a great resort to stay if you're not expecting pristine accomodations, and you don't mind the crowds that come with a large family oriented resort that's right on Kaanapali Beach.

The Westin was great in upgrading my Parents from Garden View to Ocean View for their 50th anniversary. Those of us in the Garden View really had a parking lot view. Pluses - great food and wait staff, excellent pools and super super beach location. Negatives - overpriced for dated rooms, this property shows its' age. On the positive side they say they will be refurbing the Hotel albeit slowly due to the high occupancy rate - almost always 100% full. Oceanview at $500 plus taxes and daily room fee is just not worth it for average rooms - you really do pay for the views here. They should at least through in breakfast for these prices.

Let’s see, where to begin:
- The housekeeping crews were awful. On most days we would return to the room around 4:00pm to find the room un-serviced. Inevitably they would arrive while we were getting ready to go to diner and we would tell them to come back in ½ hour. This was mistake since they go home at 4:30pm, they don’t bother to tell you this. I had to call the front desk a few time to get to room serviced

- The rooms were very small for the price. This was the opinion of most people we talked to by the pool.

- The “mountain view” rooms should have been called “parking lot/construction view” rooms. The mountain is being torn apart to build more timeshare properties.

- One of the two waterslides they mention in their literature is only about 10 feet long.

- The $25 breakfast buffet was a waste of money since almost all the food was overcooked.

- The parking lot was so small I could not find a place to park. And when I did, I would find my car parked-in by the valet service the next day.

- The quality of the TV signal was terrible. All the channels were snowy and on two occasions the entire system was down. I know you are not supposed to watch TV when on vacation in Hawaii but the kids still want their fix of Cartoon Network.

- The pools were so crowded that you could not find two chairs next to each other. I was watching people arrive at the pool at 7:30am to claim their spots.

  • Liked — Huge pool was great for kids.
  • Disliked — Small room and bad service from housekeeping.
  • Tips/Secrets — This is not a quiet place to relax as it is geared toward kids.

This is a nice hotel, but your level of satisfaction will depend greatly on how much you paid and your expectations upon arrival. My family (wife & 2 kids 7 and 4) received a special promotional invitation to stay for 5 nights for $750 (included rental car and $75 food credit) which was an offer too good to refuse. We also attended the timeshare presentation and got another $100 voucher. Because we paid so little, we had very low expectations (especially after reading some of the terrrible reviews on Tripadvisor) and didn't feel too bad when they stuck us in the worst possible room (2nd floor overlooking the valet parking stop). My sister-in-law's family, on the other hand, paid almost $400 per night through Costco and couldn't have been more disappointed. The first room they got was moldy and they got moved to a slightly better room.

The property is pretty old -- rooms look like they were built in the late 70's or early 80's -- and small. If you pay for an Ocean view room, the views will be amazing, but you will still have a small, outdated room. We noticed that the carpets had stains, the grounds were clean, but not immaculate, and the hotel overall feels a notch down from other Westin properties.

If you have kids, take a wetsuit because the pools are pretty cold and they won't be able to stay in there all day. Also, there is no kiddie-pool, so if you have any kids that can't swim, you'll have to stick by their side all day. The beach has a steep drop-off that creates a rip tide, so is not very safe for small children.

It was also very difficult to get a pool-side chair because they were all "reserved" with towels, newspapers, etc. by about 8:00am. Despite the stated hotel policy that you can't reserve the chairs for more than 30 minutes, everyone was doing it and getting away with it. We usually tried to go sight-seeing in the mornings and went to the pool after 3pm when some of the chairs started opening back up. Forget about getting a chair under the few umbrellas ... these were usually taken by 6:00am and occupied all day.

Sorry for all the negatives ... but I found that the "warnings" from other Tripadvisor reviewers helped set my expectations and therefore helped me enjoy the trip better.

On the plus side, the grounds are beautiful, with lots of waterfalls, flamingos, koi and lush landscaping. And the service was generally pleasant. Maui is a beatiful place (although crowded) and you can't really complain about being there!

I would go back if I was offered a good deal. I would NEVER pay over $250 per night to stay there.

If you end up going, have a great time ... you're in Maui!

The Westin was the second resort that we chose to stay at while we spent the first week of our honeymoon on Maui. We stayed for 3 nights and I was actually bummed when we opened the door to our room and saw how small and plain it was.

We had started our trip at the Napili Kai Resort further north, there the rooms were large, CLEAN and comfortable. The Westin's "ocean view" room was small and the bathroom was dirty with black hairs everywhere from the toilet to the tub, we actually wondered if they had even cleaned it. I thought the "heavenly" bed and shower was average. It's just unbelievable that we had to pay MORE than double of what we had paid at Napili Kai to stay at the Westin, it was sooooo not worth it.

Pros...
- adult pool
-Ka'anapali Beach
-proximity to Whaler's Village
-breakfast buffet
-Mojito's at the adult pool bar
-valet guys and parking were convenient
-boogie boarding in front of the Ka'anapali Ali'

Cons...
-couldn't find 2 lounge chairs together without walking around for at least 20 minutes.
-It's impossible to relax around the pool. Go to the beach to get away from the packed pool atmosphere.
-over-priced (I expect to pay more at a nice resort on Hawai'i, but this place is ridiculous)
-out-of-control children running, screaming and acting-up everywhere!
-numerous hidden costs, charges, taxes, fees, etc.

This is not a place for a couple to relax and especially not a place for honeymooners. Do not stay here if you do not have children. Trust me- I am a 2nd grade teacher, I deal with kids daily and I could not stand the children that acted like crazies all over this resort.

  • Liked — adult pool, beach, breakfast buffet
  • Disliked — over-priced, nearly impossible to get lounge chairs near the pool and kids being loud and crazy everywhere!
  • Tips/Secrets — Do not stay here! (unless you have young kids and can stand the prices and over-crowded pool area)
