“Fabulous resort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 December 2013

We stayed at Sheraton Maui for 6 days in connection with our wedding at the Ironwoods beach (15 minutes drive from the hotel) and honeymoon in Hawaii. It is a very nice hotel with spacious rooms and big balconies. We did not manage to swim in the ocean as the waves were quite big but did enjoy the large swimming pool area. There are a few clothes/souvenirs shops, an ABC drug store and a Food Court at the Whaler's village, which is 7-10 minutes walk from the hotel. For more choices of restaurants and shops every hour there is a free shuttle bus, going to the closest town, Lahaina, stopping at two more stops on the way. You will be told about the return collection times on the bus. We did not spend much time at the resort as we had different excursions booked to explore the island. Our breakfast was not included, so we had our meals at different places every day. We cannot comment on the hotel restaurants as we did not have any meals there. But we would definitely recommend Sheraton Maui to people considering hotels in the Kaanapali area.

We spent 6 days at Sheraton Maui. As SPG platinum, we received an upgrade to an oceanview room, but not in a great location in the hotel. The hotel is very big but felt very crowded in the pool, common areas, breakfast.
Given the platinum benefits, the $30/day resort charge was a waste of money.
Maui is very big, so it's difficult to be centrally located, but Kaanapali was a good choice, and the Black Rock is a great location for snorkeling and sunset viewing.
We were disappointed by the concierge/activities desk. First, there were only 2 people, definitely not enough for such a large hotel. Then, the recommendations were very limited to basic info and executing bookings. We expected more support to help planning activities in an island that has so much to offer.

Overall, we had a good time but expected more from a Sheraton.

I absolutely love this place. I have stayed here several times. The customer service is there to help you enjoy your stay at this beautiful location. From the front desk the pool attendant and everyone between was great and friendly. The location is great being next to Black Rock.

We went to Hawaii for our wedding anniversary. I chose this hotel on price and presumed quality of the Sheraton. Overall the property is a bit dated. Our deluxe ocean view room meant we were on top of Black Rock point and had a 15 min walk to the front desk, pool or any of the hotel restaurants. (down the hall, up an elevator, down another hall, down another elevator and then decide if you want to walk across the sprawling complex or take an interior walk. Really.) Despite being a "deluxe" room, it was small and had only one uncomfortable chair in the room and two very old chairs & table on the tiny patio. While sitting on the patio we could see the hedge that was planted to hide a fence to keep you falling onto the rocks. We asked for another room but none were available. The higher rooms had a nice view of the water and sunset I am sure.

The employees of the is hotel skipped the hospitality training that I am sure Sheraton provides. Maids and maintenance people rolled their carts right at us as we walked back and forth several times a day. We were asked at 9:00 p.m. if we had reservations for the only restaurant open and the had to wait 15 mins in the bar while we overlooked the 1/2 empty restaurant. My wife and I both commented that it seemed like we had checked into the hotel California. The place was dead at night and the "fun" restaurant for Japanese food was closed two nights of the week - which coincided with our stay. We tried to book dinner there one night but 30 mins on hold and 2 transfers they finally told me I should hike down to the restaurant to make a reservation. I stupidly did that only to be told they were already fully booked that night. Good grief.

The waiters, front desk clerks, etc all seemed to go through the motions but zero real service. We got the same rude greeting from the two empty-headed receptionists at the buffet breakfast. How hard is it to smile and be polite at 8:30 in the morning? You live in Maui for crying out loud. I finally got so frustrated I called the manager like the card in the room said. I was told he was busy but I could leave a message. Despite two messages, I never got a call back.

We discovered the Whaler's Village a short walk down from the hotel and ate all of our meals there the next 3 days including breakfast. Wonderful options, actual service and ocean views.

On the plus side, our ground level room was quiet as most of the families were in buildings overlooking the pool and lawn area 2 miles away. The pool was spotlessly clean and the beachside massage was very good. I suggest you look elsewhere for a better quality hotel. This one will be sold soon or turned into a Motel 6 to better match people's expectations. For a family on a budget, this may be a good choice. It was not a good choice for a well traveled couple celebrating their wedding anniversary.

Room Tip: Be sure and ask for a layout map of the property and where your room is located. If you get Buildin...

What an amazing resort! Located in a prime spot for accessing shopping areas, stores, and fine beaches, the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa of Kaanapali delighted the senses. The hotel is nestled along a strip of higher end accommodations with a paved pathway that allows you to walk to other hotels and a higher price point shopping mall called Whalers Village. The Sheraton offers a free shuttle service into the more affordable main shopping section of town where you can purchase sundry groceries, souvenirs, visit art galleries and eat at local restaurants. As a matter of fact, the shuttle stops at two shopping plazas each containing a major, multi-aisled grocery store (one of which is a Safeway grocers.) This is helpful if you want to save money through the purchase of food items to take back to your hotel room for preparation. Also helpful about having a hotel shuttle is the fact that a car rental may not be necessary depending on your itinerary. But, if you need a car, there is an Enterprise Rental Car office located right inside the hotel grounds.

Maui can be expensive for the budget conscious if you don't apply the economical tips in this review. Be sure to pick up and use a coupon booklet (sometimes contained within an island guide brochure) at the airport upon arrival to help save money.

Eating at the hotel will be delicious but here is a more affordable idea. Alternatives to keep on-budget would be either buying microwavable food which can be prepared in your room using the microwave they provide or visiting local eateries that are easily accessible by the hotel’s free shuttle. By the way, we are big fans of the U.S. television show “Top Chef.” On one excursion to try local cuisine, we stumbled upon a fantastic restaurant we did not know was owned by a Top Chef semi-finalist – Sheldon Simeon of Star Noodle in the Lahaina section of Maui. We’ll share more about the amazing cuisine and service of Star Noodle in another review.

Hotel rooms facing the island of Molokai (the rooms are located to the right of Black Rock) offer amazing views along with added quiet (no beach or pool frolickers) and, surprisingly, added privacy. The configuration of room balconies, with a privacy wall on each end, makes you feel secluded from even your next door neighbor.

Our rooms were marble- tiled and spacious. The staff were fantastically friendly. Maids gave us the mornings to sleep-in before they entered to clean. How annoying other hotels are which wake you early, while on vacation/holiday, to clean your room! Obviously Sheraton’s staff recognized that paradise and the rest it engenders should not be disturbed at early hours.

Old Lahaina Lua – a local attraction – was entertaining, food scrumptious, and staff quite friendly. Sheraton’s spa was top notch in its massage services. As a newbie to Hawaii, we availed ourselves of the excursion desk of the hotel. The full-day tour of the island—Road to Hana – was worth more than the price of admission (to use a familiar expression.) The tour company picked us up and delivered us back to the hotel lobby with no extra costs. Of course, we gave a generous gratuity for our tour guide’s kindness. We felt secure booking the excursion through the hotel because of built-in guarantees which unaffiliated sightseeing operators could not offer.

To sum up, we were not disappointed by Sheraton Maui. We highly recommend this place.

TIPS:
-- Get a coupon booklet (sometimes contained within an island guide brochure) at the airport upon arrival to help save money with discounted souvenirs, restaurants, etc.
-- Use the hotel shuttle bus to get into the main town for shopping, galleries, restaurants.
-- Buy microwavable groceries in the main town, accessed by the hotel’s shuttle, to save on your food expenses. They can be prepared in your room.
-- Arrive early to Old Lahaina Lua to get the best seats for seeing the floor show.

Room Tip: Choose the highest floor in the building farthest to the right of Black Rock. You will get unobstruc...

In the 19th century, Lahaina was the center of the global whaling industry. and some pics at Sheraton Maui, the romantic Kaanapali beach I love most. The water is crystal clear and it's relatively calm compared to the rest of the island.
Property is really nice and of a great location. The bellman is nice and of hospitality.
There is a notice in the bathroom that Sheraton Maui joined in the water conservation programs and sorry for the low pressure, however their shower water pressure is the most satisfying one among Shereton Waikiki and Hilton Waikiki. Such a great thing!
If you're going to have dinner, it'll take you 10 minutes to the Whaler's Village by walk. There are some cafe, restaurants along the beach, shops,,,and also a ABS store.
I would go there again.

Room Tip: my room number is 2515# buiding 2, 5th floor~ ocean view

I have stayed at this property twice and loved it both times. The last time we went we stayed on points and were trying to decide whether to stay at the Sheraton or the Westin down the street. I poured through reviews on both properties and couldn't decide. People said the Westin is more fun and active for people with kids (we have three young ones), and of course Westins are typically a step up from Sheratons. But we'd stayed at the Sheraton years before and loved it. So what to do? (I wish all of my dilemmas were of this nature :-).

We opted to split our trip between the two properties. I can now say with confidence that there really is no comparison -- the Sheraton Maui is MUCH better.

The Westin feels cramped and busy while the Sheraton feels spacious and relaxed. This wasn't surprising once we learned that the Sheraton has half as many rooms on twice as much property as the Westin. But don't get me wrong - there's plenty to do at the Sheraton and it's a short walk to the hustle and bustle of Whaler's Village.

We upgraded our room at the Sheraton to one right on the water which was amazing, but we looked at some of the other rooms and I'm sure we would have been happy at any of them.

If you are trying to decide between the two properties then take it from me: go for the Sheraton!
