“Best birthday EVER!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 March 2014

I spent my 34th birthday snorkelling alongside two giant green sea turtles who just happened to be hanging out in the waters of Kaanapali Beach directly in front of the Sheraton Maui Resort. What a perfect gift!! They are regular visitors to the area and swimmers/snorkellers are permitted to share the water with the turtles, as long as they keep a respectable distance. This alone made it well worth staying at the resort. But the resort has heaps of other great offerings - the pool is AMAZING (and huge) and perfect if you're looking to spend a few days chilling out. Easy walk to Whalers Village for shopping. Delicious buffet breakfast. Our junior suite was luxurious - modern, nicely furnished and spacious (bathrooms are ENORMOUS!) with a great ocean view. We easily had enough space for the three of us (all adults - one couple, one single). We hired a car which made exploring the rest of the island easy (and made it cheaper/easier to get to/from the airport). But there was plenty to do at the resort - I could easily have spent a week lounging by the pool. Great day spa too. Hubby enjoyed learning snuba. And jumping off Black Rock. The sunset ceremony was well worth watching. And as for the snorkelling, well, it was truly amazing to be sharing a space with such beautiful creatures, straight off the beach. Lots of colourful fish too. Just make sure you take your own mask and snorkel or hire gear from one of the discount dive shops rather than paying exorbitant resort hire fees.

Room Tip: Junior suite is modern and luxurious and offers plenty of space for couples or families.

We took the option to upgrade on check in at the Sheraton Maui to the a room overlooking Black Rock & the Pacific Ocean. An expensive option, but the experience we had was truly amazing.

We were able to have an uninterrupted view of Whales & Turtles from our balcony every day, with more than 1 Whale experience being 10 metres away from us, surfacing just off our balcony.

The part we enjoyed the most was waking up to the sound of Whales every morning. :)

A must do when staying here during Whale season.

Room Tip: On top of Black Rock & overlooking the Pacific Ocean - Try for a room off of the ground floor fo...

We stayed here for four nights in February 2014. We received a complimentary upgrade on check-in, and ended up with an ocean view room on the first floor. The room was quite good - spacious and well presented - although the bathroom was small and in need of a re-fresh.
The hotel is on the best part of Ka'anapali beach just by Black Rock and the grounds are very well maintained, although there is very little shade on the beach or by the pool area so it is very easy to get sunburnt. The resort was very busy when we were there and most days it was very hard to find a chair by the beach or the pool. We ended up walking around to North Ka'anapali beach a couple of times, where it is quieter and has a bit of shade.
Most of the hotel restaurants and bars close quite early. Whaler's Village is nearby, however, and has some good places to eat (especially the restaurant at Hula's Grill).
We found the staff at the resort to be a bit unhelpful and uninterested. The room service staff were quite rude one morning - they knocked on our door at 8:30 am wanting to clean the room. We asked for them to come back later in the day. They knocked again just 20 minutes later and when I said we still needed more time, the attendant started mouthing off and said 'well don't blame us if your room doesn't get cleaned today' and walked off muttering something under her breath. Not the kind of thing you expect. We also felt that the staff at the resort's restaurants and bars weren't all that interested in serving us and, towards the end of the day in particular, seemed more interested in closing everything up and preparing to shut down than in serving customers. We waited one night for about 20 minutes before going up to the bar to ask for our check after being ignored by several staff who were busy putting chairs away, closing windows and cleaning the bar.
Overall, we felt the resort was good but not great. The experiences we had with some of the staff left a bad taste in our mouths, but we did have a good time at the resort.

We did not have a terrible experience. But it was NOT a good one. Beds are uncomfortable, room was small (building 4), pool is a bit awkward, confusing property layout. Beach is wonderful and service was fine. Didn't eat on site due to high prices.

Perhaps most disappointing was the absence of the relaxed, quiet atmosphere we were expecting. Having stayed at the Westin last year, we heard the Sheraton was more in line with a quiet "honeymoon" type vibe. But it was LOUD. Perhaps louder and more rowdy than the Westin, which I thought would be hard to beat. Lots of kids, LOTS of people on or near black rock, both tourists and locals, many of them very loud (I'm talking screaming at the top of your lungs for hours). It actually was bad enough some days that we decided not to use our balcony. And we're not old farts... Really it was just that annoying.

I was debating between 2 and 3 stars here... But many if the negatives were outside hotel control- so I settled on the higher of the two. That being said, hotel or control or not- it was not the experience we planned on.

I went with my lady and the experience was awesome. The scenery was incredible and they upgraded us to an ocean view room. The facilities were a little older (older bathroom fixtures, worn doors etc) but the staff was super friendly and accommodating.

We were on a budget so it was nice to be in walking distance to numerous other restaurants and shops. Free shuttle into town was also great.

Best location on the beach at black rock. Will probably return with the rest of the clan.

We booked on points but paid the extra $150/night to get a deluxe ocean front room in building 6 on 1st floor. (There is a big push at check in to push people to upgrade....seemed pricey but it was worth it as we booked on points) It was a great room as the whales were going by and it was a great view. It was a quiet area but a little bit of a walk to get to the beach/pool. We also had access to Na Hoku for breakfast and evening cocktails (as part of the upgrade). It was nice to enjoy the sunset with a view from this beautiful area. Our room was big but the beds were small (doubles) and very firm. We thought with the deluxe ocean front we would get queens and they would be more comfortable (they didn't seem like Heavenly beds....but maybe that is Westin). There was a refrig and microwave in the room. We loved Kaanapali beach and being able to swim with the turtles and snorkel with the fish every morning very close to our room. We had lunch at the pool bar. The burgers were good but for the price the chips should be included with the burgers. Housekeeping was great, we actually needed them a few times and they were very good. We definitely enjoyed our stay and would stay here again.

The hotel was fully booked and 99 percent occupancy was code for lack of service. We have stayed here many times before, it has the best beach in Kaanapali, with easy access and snorkeling. Pool side restaurant was great. Breakfast and dinner at Tepanyaki Dan, were not worth the money or the calories. I would eat all my meals outside of the hotel. Our room had AC and TV remote problems. The pool ran out of towels at 1230 PM. Some of the staff were great, too many just had an attitude and did not care. I will skip staying here next year and go back to the Westin.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on black rock itself.
