“Great old Hawaii choice on Maui”
Reviewed 19 July 2014

I have stayed at many locations on Maui over the last 10 years. I like the Sheraton Maui over many other resorts in Kanapali or Wailea. It has an old Hawaii feel like the Mauna Kea on the Big Island. The grounds are beautiful, and the staff is wonderful. The staff makes up for the rooms, which need an update to compete with those in the Wailea area. Signs say that an update is coming. The food at the main restaurant does fall short, very average. However you are very close to Whaler's Village and Lahaina that both have fantastic restaurants. The only staff that was not pleasant was the beach towel group. I am not sure they even work for the Sheraton, which is a mistake if true.

We stayed here in October 2013 and came back July 2014 and stayed for a couple of days before going to the Hyatt Regency Kanapali on the other side of the beach. Again the front desk person was wonderful. I had booked a package deal from Expedia with air and car and 2 days at the Sheraton. I told her we had stayed at the Black Rock rooms back in October and loved the location. She upgraded us (for a charge) to that part of the hotel. She also included the club room where they serve a continental breakfast and wine and appetizers in the evening free of charge.

The Sheraton is known for being on the part of Kanapali Beach where the snorkeling is great. My boyfriend saw the big turtle again and lots of colorful fish. This time we were in here in July so there were more children and families then in October. We also went to the Luau again at the Sheraton.....the food and entertainment were excellent once again.

If you are in Maui for a special occasion, spend the extra money for a room or suite at the Black Rock part of the resort....it is worth it.

Room Tip: ask for ocean front Black Rock

The resort itself was faultless, absolutely stunning and an eye for detail. The activities were never ending and my only regret was not booking longer. I am a coeliac though, and I found it quite difficult and pricey to eat there. There are options, but it takes a lot of effort to figure out a safe meal, and only certain restaurants in the resort and near by Whalers Village had anything to offer. I found though that the staff (particularly at the Black Rock) were always helpful in any way possible and gave me a good meal the three times I visited. It can also be confusing to know where you will be picked up on tours, there are two lobby areas so I suggest you always ring to confirm where you will be picked up from. I found the staff and the resort breathtakingly perfect, and would highly recommend this resort. I stayed in a deluxe ocean front room and regret nothing. The room was great and spacious and the view was great too. My mum and I traveled together and we both found endless activities to do that suited us both. Also be aware of the strong currents on the beach. My mum and I are both strong surf swimmers but we saw many people struggle, also the beaches didn't seem to be patrolled. Remember if you do the road to Hana- take motion sickness tablets with you! I have never been motion sick in my life, but this drive was sickening to the stomach. But it is beautiful to do. Overall, a great trip, I will absolutely come back there again, not overly busy (even on July 4th), simply an incredible resort.

Room Tip: Go for the Ocean Front ! it is worth it, and where they are placed it is nice and quiet.

We visited the Sheraton Maui in 2011 and LOVED it. I told my daughter then that we found where she would get married. :-) So, when she actually got engaged at Christmas, we contacted the Sheraton. Shelly Bright was fantastic - she handled every detail of the wedding perfectly, and we couldn't be happier with how things turned out.

My husband and I upgraded to an ocean front room in building 6, which was spectacular - great views, a beautiful, big room with everything (fridge, microwave, balcony, comfy bed) that we needed. Building 6 is quiet and private AND you have to take three elevators to get to the pool, beach or lobby. It was fine for us, but not so great for my 74 year old uncle and aunt, who ended up getting lost every time they tried to go anywhere! They would have been much better off in an ocean view closer to the lobby.

The Breakfast Buffet was awesome, and for 5 days we had really outstanding service from Jessie, our server. When Jessie wasn't there, the service was really slow, and had to be flagged down just to touch up the coffee.

We had the wedding dinner in the Black Rock Steak and Seafood Restaurant, and the food was delicious. We both recommend the NY Strip - Yummy!! The service was slow though, and it took me 20 minutes to get a refill on my ice tea.

Service in the Cliff Dive Bar was terrible every time we went there. Very slow or non-existent. My son and his girlfriend stood there waiting to order hamburgers (cooked right there) for nearly 20 minutes, and then were told that since they closed in 10 minutes, they wouldn't take their order. My son complained that they could not get anyone to wait on them, so they finally relented and threw two burgers on the grill. By now, the bar was closed (9pm) and so they got their burgers in a to go box. When they sat down to eat them, the burgers were RAW in the middle. Not rare - RAW. They took them to the front desk, and the food service manager called the next morning to apologize and credited them for the food. It was really great of the manager to do that, but the experience at the bar was just terrible.

We love this hotel, in spite of the uneven service. Some of their people are superstars (Shelly and Jessie) and some of them can't be bothered.

The location is perfect. Black Rock is great for snorkeling, Whaler's Village is close and the beach is beautiful. My daughter and her new husband moved to another part of the island for their honeymoon and ended up driving back up to Kaanapali because they liked it so much.

We will go back. :-)

Room Tip: Building 6 is quiet and the views are beautiful (we saw a pod of dolphins from our lanai), but it is...

Dana Brandon at the pool towel kiosk is the friendliest and nicest person so far. Many of the staff members we've met are also. Great hotel, great staff! The views are amazing from our room. Building 3. Near the spa. We can watch the Black Rock jumpers and swim with turtles. Sit on the balcony with a great view of Lanai and the beach.

After two trips to Maui, we finally found our favorite hotel. The setting is beautiful, the grounds well manicured, perfect for families with the wonderful lazy river pool. Highly recommended for anyone.
