“Amazing stay - will come back!”
Reviewed 16 August 2012 via mobile

Modern, fully equipped, nice pools and BBQ area , the grocery stone is just across the street...feels like home!

Beach chairs and umbrella should be included, but I guess this is how it works in Hawaii.

Overall, we did not want to leave and will come back for sure.

Fantastic resort with every amenity you'd want or need at your fingertips. Spacious accommodations (great for families with teens who need their own space), great beach facilities, the fabulous Duke's restaurant, and a staff that makes you feel welcome from the moment you drive up. My family has stayed at this resort twice and we are already making plans for our third visit. Having stayed all over the Islands and at other properties on Maui, I can say without hesitation that there is no finer place for a vacation than Honua Kai. We LOVE this resort!

This was our first trip to Maui with our family of 6 adults & 2 grandchildren. This resort offers valet parking for those that prefer it. Our 3 BR, 3 bath condo was on the ground level in the Hokulani tower, our location was perfect for our family. The condos are beautiful & well appointed with top of the line kitchen appliances. The washer & dryer was an asset with 2 - small children in our party. Honua Kai charges a $25 daily resort fee. Our first night, we ate on property at Duke's Beach House, during happy hour. Our meals & drinks were great & we used coupons from the front desk for free appetizer or dessert. We visited the Times Supermarket a few minutes drive from the resort to stock up on groceries. Honua Kai has a wonderful grill area, it was very close to our condo, so we cooked out 3 dinners. We used our lanai daily, it offered extremely comfortable patio furniture. We enjoyed most of our meals outside at the patio table that seated our entire family of 8. Our condo was steps from the pool & a very short walk to the beach. The pools were all a perfect temperature, always had lounge chairs available. You could have chairs & umbrellas set up for you at the beach, as well. Our children snorkeled off our beach & said they had better snorkeling on our beach, than on the tour they paid for elsewhere! It is a great beach for sunsets. Our grandchildren enjoyed feeding the fish in the koi ponds at 8:30 every morning. Our family all agreed, we loved this resort & hope to return again, preferably very soon!

My wife and I celebrated out 20th anniversary in Maui by staying at the Honua Kai. We enjoyed our 1 bedroom condo on the 6th floor that we rented through vrbo.com. The Condo had very nice finishes throughout and was perfect for our needs.

The Honua Kai Resort was very clean, it was all in good condition, and we enjoyed the pool area. The beach was very nice in front of the condo although the ocean there does have coral on the bottom a short distance into the water. It was great for snorkeling but you need to go down the beach for swimming.

We found the location to be great with quick trips to Lahaina for dinner as needed.

I would definitely stay here again if we were to visit Maui again.

Room Tip: Make sure and have a piece of Hula Pie at Duke's. It is delicious!

Scouring resorts online for a family trip to Maui can be a daunting task. I was so relieved when I walked into our 2 bd, 2 bath condo at Honua Kai. We had a beautiful partial view of the ocean and full view of the mountains. The resort was exactly as portrayed online. Staff and concierge were very courteous and helpful. Grounds were extremely well mainted and the onsite restaurant, Dukes, is fabulous. We rented the condo from a private owner through Harris Hawaiin Property Management. Top notch!

Room Tip: consider a higher floor with outside views. The garden view would be fine, but there is nothing lik...

My family and I spent 4 nights on the Big Island in a regular hotel room and then transferred to a Maui Honai Kai one bedroom condo. It was a huge improvement after staying in a regular hotel room and I planned it so that it would occur at the end of the trip instead of the beginning.

I concour with other posters comments about the excellent modern kitchen furnishings and large bathroom. We only brought clothing for 5 days on our 9 day trip because of the washer and dryer. We were upgraded from resort view to partial ocean view at check in without requesting it. Our room faced the south side towards the Westin Resort and the view was pretty good. There is a construction site next door that may be a failed project; they haven't gotten past the foundation and its been there a long time.

We only ate a Dukes one time but liked it. See my other review about "room service" from the Honai Kai store - they served us absolutely horrible food but the store itself is very nice. Just understand ahead of time that there is no real room service - we didn't know. After that we used the grocery store across the street and ate outside the resort for our other meals. After a few $12 drinks and $7 draft beers we brought in our own supply that we purchased from the grocery store. As long as plastic is used there is no problem bringing in your drink.

This is a condo, not a hotel, so we weren't expecting much from as far as cleaning, but we had to call or ask to get towels and toilet paper. At least you can always wash your own towels...

The area is crazy windy at times. I had my baseball cap blown off many times. My daughter had her inflatable raft blown out of her hands and I swear I swam half way across the ocean before I caught up with it.

The sewage plant smell sometimes gets past the wind and can be smelled at the pools but it doesn't last long because the wind changes. The smell was not an issue but it was amusing; it reminded me of Mexico. I never smelled it from our balcony.

The beach snorkeling was OK and our children had no issues with the rocks. Wear water shoes or swim fins, don't step on coral, and its fine. We all got a bit chilled after being in the water for 30 minutes at a time and the wind is always there...its not warm for people used to 100 degree Texas weather anywhere in Hawaii.

We were allowed to do late check out for an additional $150. Initially, we were told that we would be changing rooms before the normal check out time because our room was already booked but management called to let us know they were able to let us keep the room as long as we liked as long as we did not spend an additional night. That was a huge plus because our return flight was not until 10:30PM. The desk service was very good.

We stayed here for 4 nights in Late July in a 2 bedroom. We had a partial ocean view which also included an ugly view of unfinished construction between Honua Kai and the Westin, but as long as we didn't look down we could see the Ocean and Black Rock from our balcony. The rooms are great and beds wonderful, just as expected. We rented from resort and valet was included in the $25 resort fee. This was great as well! The pools are very nice and aloha hour at Dukes was great as well. One morning the wife and I rented a SUP right in front of property. She was good at it, but I did more falling than standing up. We also snorkeled from Honua Kai up to the Westin and the snorkeling was awesome. Some of the best I have ever scene in Hawaii within feet of the shore! Only negative is the wind. It is windy, not gentle breezes, but downright gusty windy and I found myself in the hot tub during the day a couple times to warm up. I had read about the wind in other reviews so wasn't surprised. One night we shared a sandwich from the market downstairs and it was awful. Bakery items/Cupcakes and Coffee are very good there though.
