We stayed for a week in January 2014 and booked a 3 bedroom apartment. Note that apartments seem to be all privately owned and you can book through local agents as well as the resort and it is much cheaper through the agents. We booked through Kaanapali Beach Rentals - someone from that company met us at the property at check in time rather than going through the reception. I probably wouldn't describe the site as a resort - only because as the units are owned privately the facility doesn't have say room service or an actual restaurant but there is a Dukes bar/restaurant located on the property. Our units was fantastic - the bedrooms are all suitable for separate couples as everyone has their own bathroom and TV - also a very good kitchen and deck. The property has a great pool set up with a series of pools that are linked. We used the concierge to arrange a few activities and they were very good. Being from Australia, we are used to very good, white sandy beaches with good waves and the only negative I can find is that for us the beach was pretty average, with brown sand and the water had a few rocks/reefs just off shore so we didn't really swim there. However, snorkling is OK straight off the resort and as a general comment none of the beaches in Maui are that great. We also visited the golf and followed Adam Scott for the day. Suggest that you need to rent a car at the airport when staying in Maui - we used ours every day to go to activities or shopping.

Room Tip: We were in 503 - hence at the end and had a good view from the balcony. Rooms in the 20's seemed...

RUN don't walk to making your reservation at Honua Kai. It is absolutely perfect in every way.

Tip: VRBO a room from one of the owners. There are tons of options available and it is actually less money than reserving straight through the hotel. The Owner we booked through was amazing. This way you also don't have to deal with a front desk, etc, for anything other than parking!

Three years in a row my family spent a fortnight here, and heaps of our friends have been too. We booked through the owners of the apartment rather than the hotel, much cheaper. Great walks to Black Rock for swimming with turtles. Easy bus to Lahaina for meals out and shopping. Rent a car across the road to get to remote beaches. Supermarket opposite for groceries. It is perfect! Great beach, great paddle boarding.

Room Tip: Chose the new tower

As a preface I'll point out that we were there for a week and somebody else paid for us – so pretty much everything seemed great to us. Notwithstanding that…
The courtyard was absolutely great – the swimming pool and the bar was terrific as well. The staff was really nice. The room we had was amazing and the location was really great too. It's not too far from Lahaina Town, (it's about a 20 minute drive) and the drive up to the north part of the island is really cool. We rented some scooters and drove up the coast side past the blowhole and almost up to where the road starts to turn to gravel. I highly recommend doing that – booting around on those scooters is a great way to see Maui. Just north of the hotel is a local microbrewery – definitely check that place out also. We weren't there to golf, but I hear the golf course just south of the hotel is absolutely amazing – and the number of times we drove past it it certainly looked amazing.
Our friends had rented one of the top most suites – and those places where absolutely amazing. I have no idea how much they cost – I'm glad I got a chance to party in one of those suites!

Definitely also get yourself into Lahaina Town for a dinner or two – and do check out the microbrewery. We rented boogie boards and snorkeling stuff from the local store just across the street from the hotel – and that was a good deal and I definitely recommend you do that too. The locals there will give you good advice as to where you should snorkel and for the most part it seemed like it was pretty good advice.

For our Christmas vacation, our family of four stayed in the Hokulani tower room 215. The 2bdr suite was very spacious and looked out over the gardens, pools and distant view of the ocean. Although we had a very spacious patio, we shared it with about 5 other units. The resort tried to create some privacy with large planters, but we didn't feel comfortable leaving the windows open during the evening. The pool area was awesome and the beach area was great with plenty of room to find a spot on the soft beach. It was nice having a condo unit with good cooking utensils, since we cooked breakfast every morning and cooked dinner twice with our fresh caught fish from our excursion on the Reel Luckey - couldn't get any fresher fish.

If we were to stay here again, we would opt for a room a little closer to the beach so it had a balcony with more privacy. Otherwise we would highly recommend this resort.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a private balcony.

We had our extended family here for Christmas. Our two 2bdrm units were on the 8th floor of the Konea tower over looking the courtyard, pools and ocean. Stunning. Condo units were spacious and well appointed as was the hotel itself. Pool area(s) is equally nice. I would recommend staying here BUT make sure you get the Konea tower as the bad odors other reviewers have complained about are definitely true in the other tower as some friends of ours were staying there and had that problem. Also, be aware of the overly "type A" travellers who insist on placing towels on pool chairs at 7am so they can reserve them for when they come back in the afternoon - the pool staff does not enforce their own rules regarding this! Can be hard to find chairs between 11am-3pm.

We spent a family Christmas away from the cold and snow of New England and this place turned out to be and excellent choice of where to stay. Our 5th floor 2 bedroom suite was more than comforable for our family of 4. Our balcony looked over the pools, grounds and straight out to open ocean. I read several of the negative reviews just to get a full "objective" review of Hanua Kai, and to those people who wrote nothing but complaints need to get over what ever ails them in lfe. If you are unhappy here, then you are unhappy no matter where or what you do. Most likely most of them were looking to get something for free, so they complained. Those of you who don't like hearing kids, we only wish your parents should have decided to not have any. Anyway, the grounds were beautiful, the pools were nice and very active. The wind was a very welcomed free amenity as it cooled us off from the heat. The beach was nice and waves were plenty. There is also have a very nice beach walk that is parallel to the ocean which I used every morning to exercise. I can't comment of some of the services, due to renting from private ownership, but the staff I met in the hallways were freindly and always greeted us with a smile and an aloha. There is a supermarket and eateries within minutes, so were able to eat in for breakfast, and a nice christmas eve dinner by using the grills on the grounds. It is our 3rd time to Maui, 1st at Honua Kai, and I can say it wont be the last. If I lived on the west coast, we would make it an annual trip. Aloha and Mahalo!!
