“very nice place”
Reviewed 19 July 2014

We would like to thank Shelly Weakland and Tropical Travelers for finding the Honua Kai for our family to stay this July. The place was clean, well-maintained, beautiful scenery, and not all that crowded, which made lounging at the many pools enjoyable. We would definitely visit Maui and The Honua Kai again.

We just had the pleasure of staying 19 days at Honua Kai this June. We rented from the owner via VRBO and stayed in a 2 bedroom 7th floor unit in the Hokulani Tower. (The one closest to Lahaina.) We had a nice view of the pools, the ocean and Molokai in the distance. Being on the 7th floor, the top floor on the wings, was perfect because we had a good view and it kept pool noise to a minimum.

Our unit was roomy and had everything we could ask for. The full sized kitchen was a great asset and the washer and dryer got a workout. Yes, the dryer took forever, but I just reminded myself that I could be feeding quarters into a machine in a windowless laundry room instead of sipping a Maui brew on the lanai while the clothes tumbled. ;)

The beds were very comfortable and the furniture in the living room was comfy too. The 5 of us had plenty of room to stretch out. The bathrooms were large and well appointed. No complaints there. Since we rented direct from the owner, our closets were full of snorkel gear, umbrellas, beach chairs, water toys, coolers and more. Your mileage may vary.

The condo was beautiful as far as furniture and appliances go, but was looking a bit too "lived in" if you know what I mean. Carpet had a big wrinkle and was spotted here and there. Walls had some dents and dings. The dryer handle was close to breaking/broken and the door lock knob would pop off when the door closed automatically. Nothing major, but it needed some TLC.

Some reviews have questioned the luxury tag for this condo and I might agree. I'd call it high end homey. Granite and stainless are nice, but it doesn't feel like you're in the Sultan of Brunei's palace or anything. I'd say it was perfect for us; nice but not stuffy.

Regarding the air conditioning, some reviews have complained that it couldn't cool the condo below 78 degrees. The master bedroom AC controls do not shut off when the lanai doors are open, but the main AC does, as you probably knew. But! when we closed the lanai doors and wanted AC again, we had to tap the power button on the main control to turn it back on. Maybe this was because our's was faulty but it could be that the bedroom AC was the only thing cooling your condo after the first time your lanai was opened.

The resort has a lot to like. It's on a good beach, the pools are excellent, the grounds are beautiful and very well maintained. Dukes beach house is an excellent restaurant 10 feet from the pools. If you've been to Leilani's, Hula Grill or Kimo's you know what to expect at Dukes. We ate there 3 times and enjoyed each dinner.

The resort spa was given a thumbs up by my wife and sister in law. Not cheap, but enjoyable. (For a more budget friendly spa, go up the street to Zensations Spa.)

Aina Gourmet Market was in our building and was a convenient spot for a good latte. Prices are quite salty on food and goodies there.

We used the gym in the Konea Tower next door and thought it was fine, but it does get busy, so like many activities on Maui, it's better to get there early! The grounds and beach path provide plenty of walking opportunities, and you can always walk up the lower road if you want to get a better look at your neighborhood.

We really liked the location of HK. It's across the street from Times Supermarket, Pizza Paradiso, Java Jazz and our favorite breakfast spot: Slappy Cakes. Napili and Kapalua are a short drive north, and Whaler's Village and Lahaina are a short drive south.

Looked at as a whole, Honua Kai was a great resort for our family. When looking at a place to stay the next time we come to Maui, it's hard to beat. Other places might boast 1 or 2 factors that surpass HK, but for the price it's hard to find a total package that compares.

My family and I stayed here for a full week this month, and we had a great time. The room (we had a 2 bedroom) was very spacious, had a nice little kitchen, 2 really superb bathrooms (one a private bathroom from the main bedroom, the other had two entrances, one from the main room, one from the other bedroom), and a great view. We stayed on the 2nd floor, overlooking the main courtyard, and had a nice ocean view from the lanai. We have two kids (age 7 and 5), and they LOVED the pools. Ocean access is really nice (and gorgeous), though be forewarned that the beach has a pretty sudden dropoff, so probably not so great for really young kids. However, you can see sea turtles swimming just offshore, so there's a benefit to the dropoff.

All in all, a nice resort. Not particularly close to much, but there is a decent market across the street where you can buy just about any food item you need. Duke's, the restaurant at the resort, is decent, but expensive. A dinner for four will set you back $150 without even really trying. (Not that rare in Hawaii...so we wound up eating food from the grocery store for breakfast and lunch most days.)

HOWEVER, here is what I would say to people considering booking a room here. The view is everything! Not all rooms are created equal--what I mean by that is that two people could each book "partial ocean view" rooms on the same day, and wind up with wildly different views. We had paid what I thought was a good amount of money for a partial ocean view, and wound up with our room facing the mountains, and literally if we leaned out from the balcony we could sort of see the ocean. Look at the property on Google Maps--the layout of the building maximizes the number of rooms that can see the ocean, but it also makes seeing the ocean a technicality in lots of those rooms. I would urge you to try very hard to find out which room you'll be in, and to see if you can find a photo of it online--if the view matters to you. We asked them if they could move our room, and the woman working the front desk went to a superhuman effort to do it--she found four other rooms that were available, and let us go see each one. We wound up changing to a room overlooking the courtyard. Even though we thought the courtyard would be too noisy, it really was not--and we were on the 2nd floor. We loved the feel of it all--felt like we were in the middle of it all.

This place is best for families, there's no question about it. If my wife and I had come here as a young married couple without kids, or even without kids now, I don't think we would have liked it so much. The pools are all shallow, and geared towards kids. There is one quiet pool, but for the most part you'll be dealing with lots of kids here. That was great with us, but know this in advance if you're booking a room here. Oh, and rent a car. The hotel is not particularly close to much, and you'll need to drive to access much stuff on the island.

All in all, an exceptionally nice hotel, but do your research if you care about the view, and know in advance that families with kids make up most of the clientele. Have fun!

Room Tip: If you are getting a "partial ocean view" room, ask how partial the view is. Some can bare...

Stayed at the Honua Kai (Konea Tower) for a week in May and it was wonderful! We booked through VRBO.com and we were in a 3rd floor, mountain view, one bedroom unit. Beautiful Maui sunrises on the lanai...can't get much better! We are a family of four with two teenagers and were very comfortable here for our stay. The unit was very clean, had everything we needed right down to coolers, snorkel gear and a great washer & dryer. We used the pool many times and the beach access is wonderfully close! By evening the pool could get a little dirty with bugs but given the fact that it's a tropical location, bugs are hard to keep out of a pool. The grounds were gorgeous and very well maintained. We honestly did not encounter too many staff members but the guys at the lobby entrance were always very friendly. As for the "sewer smell" I've read about in other reviews, not once did we smell anything during our stay at the resort, only briefly out on the main highway. The location is a great homebase to do all the major Maui "must-do's". We loved Kapalua Bay beach which was a short drive away. Also, my husband is a runner and he absolutely loved the boardwalk that runs all along Kaanapali.

We booked this resort because our friends were staying here. We had a very nice ocean view studio room. Nice kitchen, although we did not cook at all. Nice size room with a king size bed and sitting area. If I had to do lit again, I would look for a place that was more adult oriented. We are retirees and although we enjoy children, they were a little overwhelming. We had to get up at 7 am and put towels on the chairs around the "quiet" pool area just to get a seat. The other pool areas were very crowded with little children and their parents. Also, make sure you get your pool towels the night before or there will be none left in the afternoon.
Duke's restaurant on the property was great, nice setting and good food. We found out too late there is a paved path behind the resort that takes you to other hotels along the beach with restaurants and shopping.

First I should start off by saying this review is not about Maui, rather the Honaua Kai Resort & Spa property and management. Maui is an absolutely incredible island. The Honua Kai though leaves much to be desired.

Honua Kai is a very, very large property (10+ floors) with a total of a hundred or more units. The time we stayed at the resort, finding neighboring chairs by the pool was always a problem. If you don't mind being nickeled and dimed, you can purchase a cabana for $100. At other resorts I visited in Maui finding chairs by a pool was never a problem. There are also no resort facilities on the beach (not entirely uncommon though)

The communal resources are poor at best, and the staff is fairly helpless. Whether the problem was getting in the garage or the gym, key cards were always a problem. Every time we experienced a problem of any sort we got a lecture about how the problem was tied to the fact we didn't rent directly through the resort. While it's true we did rent through a private lister (the resort itself did not have penthouse units available during our timeframe), the keys are controlled by the facility security office so the excuse makes no sense. Further, a non-descript alarm went off late at night. The resort staff was unreachable leaving many residents confused as to what to do. Was there a gas leak, a fire? All that was said was 'alert' along with a loud siren. This was at night and sounded for at least 10 minutes. Note that this is not a hotel and concierge service is not available 24/7, so if emergencies like this happen you are on your own.

On a previous trip I stayed over at the Westin Ocean Resort Villas and was impressed with the communal gas grills, patio tables, pools, etc. This place offers very little of what I experienced.

Room Tip: Expect to pay a premium for an ocean view room. The balconies are very nice though.
