“Very relaxing vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2014 via mobile

We stayed in the Konea tower in a VRBO. Our unit was supplied with everything we needed for our 9 day stay. The beds were extremely comfortable! We rented a 2 bedroom unit with friends; each bedroom had its own bathroom and air conditioning. The kitchen was equipped nicely. The swimming pools are beautiful. The pool staff are very friendly, Anthony was great! The fitness room is great. We walked on the boardwalk to Black Rock almost everyday and then relaxed on the beach. Duke's Beach House is very convenient for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I would highly recommend Honua Kai.

I have really hard time to decide the rating for Honua Kai. I would probably give 3.5*, if I could.

I first start with positive things:
* Very nice, big condo. We have no objections regarding the apartment - it was clean, nicely equipped, comfortable. It was quiet inside during night, we slept well (after reprogramming AC, which was set too low by default). The kitchen is big enough for vacation purposes and all appliances are up to date. Big bathroom, with both shower and bath tub (which was great for kids).
* 24/7 gym, with modern devices and weights. One of the best we have seen in resorts, we visited so far.
* Very close (walking distance) to supermarket and other small stores with fresh local food.
* Good snorkeling right next to the hotel. Almost every day I was able to see and swim with big turtles. Plenty of fish, especially further away from the shore. If you like snorkeling, bring your own equipment!

Negative things:
* Ridiculous resort fee. I am a big enemy of hidden fees of all kinds and therefore I hated to realize after arrival that we have to add additional $25 per day to our final bill!
* Virtually no "resort" services. Despite the fact we paid quite high price, plus additionally $25 per day resort fee, there were no services we could have enjoyed for this price - no snorkeling rentals, no toys or swim aid for kids, no beach umbrellas or beach chairs, no crib etc. For everything, we had to pay extra fees.
* Only one, overpriced restaurant on the property.
* Pathetic pools. Actually I can write that there are no pools: there are swim "bowls" for kids (with max depth 3.5') and that's it. So if you are a swimmer, you either go to ocean or you are out of luck.
* Absolutely no entertainment after sunset. After 9pm outside of the resort resembles a ghost town. The only thing you can enjoy there in the evening is hot tub, there is not much else to do.

I would recommend this resort for families with small kids. The pools are great for kids, they are nicely organized, with a lot of shade. Bring your own kids' toys, as there is no rental at pools, only stores to buy things...
IMHO the resort is less suitable for active couples.

This condo complex was chosen by family for our Maui stay and we were not disappointed. We rented 713 in the Hokulani tower through Steve Gatchell at VRBO who was very attentive to our requests. The condos are quite spacious with a great kitchen and washer, dryer. The best aspect is the large lanai with doors that open completely. We enjoyed many an hour sitting there and watching the weather, Molokai in the distance and boats cruising on the ocean. There is a nice restaurant, Duke's, on the grounds with pretty good food. I wish we had tried the snorkeling in the front of the hotel - apparently there are sea turtles visible.

Keep in mind that parking and maid service are at additional cost.

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms are a must.

Just returned from 6 nights in a 1 bedroom apartment (family of 4 with a 9 & 13 yr old). Kids slept in the lounge on sofa bed and roll-away bed. Beautiful apartments with everything you need - full kitchen and laundry. Supermarket just across the road (5-10 min walk) Pools were great, slide for the kids and a few different pools to keep everyone happy. Cafe for takeaway coffees in the complex and Dukes restaurant also on site. Nice beach with great snorkeling right off the beach - we went to a few snorkeling spots and this was the best by far, and only 1 of 2 places we saw turtles (which was such a highlight). About a 10-15 min drive to the Whalers Village (a 45-60 min walk apparently but we didn't do it). Would definitely recommend having a car on Maui, to explore the island.

Rented through Kaanapali Beach Rentals (across the street from Honua Kai). Experience with all at Kaanapali Beach Rentals was great. Thank you Jeanette for greeting us and showing us around.

Rented unit #432 - unit was up to date and beautiful. Washer and dryer worked fine (not sure what other reviews were complaining about?) All in unit worked fine. Clean and ready for us when we arrived at 4pm.

Cons - carpet should be replaced as it is starting to show some wear. Unit needs more blankets and would be better if there were more places to put your clothes. We were a family of three and two of us had to live out of our suit case.

Pros - great Bosch appliances, fully equipped kitchen. Just bring your food. Viking gas grills down near the pools were a nice plus (restaurants in Maui are costly and food is so so). Lots of pools, adult only pool was a great thing. Wish parents would abide by the rule of "no one under 12 in the hot tubs" - it really is not healthy for the kids. Common areas and grounds were very nice.

I would definitely recommend staying at Honua Kai.

Room Tip: If you book with a rental agency or owner the room you see online is the room you get so don't w...

Stayed in Konea Tower. Great place to remove yourself from commercialism. Front desk is not 24/7, no business office with computers/printers, no catamarans, surf board rentals on beach. Rooms are cleaned well and arranged in almost original manner. Sometimes bed throw pillows are in place, sometimes not. Our friends did find dirty dishes in cupboard so they just ran dishes through dishwasher upon arrival.

Easy walk across grassy field to Times Supermarket and small strip retail center.

Hotel staff is very friendly. Duke's Restaurant is great location for lunch after being in pool or on beach with children.

This was my first time to Maui and my first time to this hotel. My daughter and I had a studio w/ an ocean and a full kitchen. I'd never wanted a kitchen at a hotel but this one changed my mind! It was fully loaded w/ top end appliances and stocked w/ all of the kitchen tools I needed. The room had a king size bed and a pull out couch. Both were super comfy. The washer and dryer came in super handy for sand and salt removal from swimsuits and various towels. The lanai ("patio" to us mainlanders) was roomy and equipped w/ a good sized table and 5 chairs and an ottoman. So great to sit outside at dinner time or read in the morning (midday was too hot for sitting in the direct sun). The one drawback was certain Front Desk staff. The room I paid for was an ocean view and there was a palm tree smack dab in the middle of my view. After looking at several different rooms we decided to stay put. Valets and concierge were helpful and cheerful. This hotel was expensive but we enjoyed it and its location and amenities.

Room Tip: Make sure that if you pay for ocean view you get ocean view not a partial view. I also preferred to...
