“Worked out great for our family!”
Reviewed 23 July 2010

Our family stayed at the Makani Sands from June 10-June 20, 2010. We stayed on the third floor since it had 3 bedrooms and we had 6 people. The building is a little dated but the location, layout and the facilities worked out great for us.
We had everything we needed in the room, WiFi, full kitchen, cable, washer dryer, etc.
We were right on the beach. While there was not a lot of beach, our chairs were on the concrete just above the beach. The best of both worlds. The pool is by the parking lot which was a bummer. Although we were only in it a couple of times.
It was close to Lahaina and Kaanapali so we drove into those places a lot.
It is not a Taj Majal, but it was economical and worked out great for us.

We had a wonderful time at Makani Sands. There were 7 of us in our party and everyone was comfortable. The property was very clean and the other guests were polite and enjoyed talking with them.

We stayed in unit 310, which we later found out from other guests, was the "Penthouse Suite" of the condos.

The views were spectacular, lots of whales and turtles to watch.

I would highly recomend staying here!

Ants

This is an older small condo complex right on the ocean. No beach, but ocean front. Pool behind the units, so it was very quiet the entire time. We were in a corner unit, Unit 210, which had a huge lanai, which was the best thing about the accommodation. The other units have much smaller lanai’s. There was also complimentary high-speed internet.

Our unit was badly in need of updating. Old green carpeting in both bedrooms, tacky furniture throughout. However, the bed was very comfortable! There is so much stuff in the unit, furniture, fake plants, pillows in the dresser drawers, knick-knacks, and a large telescope, that you have no space. It is a 2 bedroom unit, but there was only 2 of us and it felt cramped. Luckily, we had the extra bedroom to put things in. But the biggest problem was ants. We couldn’t get rid of the ants. All the food had to be kept in the refrigerator. We sprayed and put out ant traps, but we still had ants in the kitchen and bathrooms. We also found a huge dead cockroach when we arrived, but nothing until a week later. Then we had 2 of the biggest roaches I’ve ever seen running around the living room and another dead roach in the bathroom. There is no maid service provided until you have stayed for 14 days. We have been coming to Maui for many years and have stayed at Maui Kai, Hololani (our favorite), Napili Sunset, Hale Napili, Napili Surf and a few others, and this is by far the worst place we stayed. We never had ants or roaches at any of these places. We won’t be staying at Makani Sands again.

We booked our trip through More Hawaii For Less . You can book directly through them though, so google their website: Makani Sands. Their photos and video don't do the property justice. The unit we stayed in was 209. This was the 2nd from the corner unit on the 2nd floor. It was not the most modern unit, but it was clean and right on the water. The Staff and Grounds people were kind and helpful. When one of the people staying next to us, locked themselves on the balcony, John the onsite night manager was there in a jiffy and got them unlocked from the inside. Every morning they are cleaning up the grounds, which were kept perfectly clean and watered. The unit came fully furnished with everything you would need in a kitchen, bathroom and beach chairs etc. There is also 2 BBQ's to use, which I did with BBQ Oysters that I got from Star Market just south of us on the left side in the Maui Dive Shopping center. There is also a wonderful stretch of beach you can walk down which is really romantic. They have up to 3b, 2b units that are town house style on the upper 3rd and 4th floors. Plus they have a pool. But who needs a pool in Hawaii???

The sound of the ocean crashing (1-2 foot small waves) is a very relaxing sound. Be sure to rent snorkel gear from Boss Frog’s or Maui Diving just a few blocks down the street as you can snorkel right in front of the Condo. Also, just south of us on the left hand side in the Maui Dive shop center is Java Jazz which is a little funky cafe that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The coffee is great, staff is pleasant and the food was terrific! Also in the same shopping center is a Pizza, sandwich place (can't remember the name) which has good cheap food for quick bites to eat. Within this shopping center is Star Market and other tourist shops, etc. There is also a Mexican restaurant which has a bar that is open until 2 a.m.

ABC market (like a super 7-11) has a gas station and all the tourist stuff you need to buy and take home to the family and also has a Taco Truck that shows up at night till about 10-11 pm that has some of the best Salsa and Tacos I have ever had (and I am from California!), that is just down the street as well on the right hand side. Just north is Dolly's Pub and Grill. They have some of the best Pub food that you can eat. This is a local hang out and was recommended to me by a local. They have 17 TV's so if you want to catch your local Football team playing, this is the spot. Get there early and your $10 dollar entrance fee on the Sunday gets you two drinks or a custom made omelet with anything you could want. Great local crowd too!

Three must try 'Good Eats' places:
1) Jonny's Burger Joint in Kaanapali (lower level of an Italian restaurant). One of the best burgers I ever had!
2) Kobe Japanese Steak House in Lahaina off of Dickenson Street. This was a great experience, our chef was really funny and made some really good food. Reservations recommended.
3) Kimo's (on Front Street in downtown Lahaina). This was recommended to me by a friend. Outstanding steak and seafood. Make your reservation around sunset about 45 minutes early and then ask for preferred seating on the water. This was a very romantic evening. Afterwards, walk across the street just north and get some Hawaiian Shaved ice.

Save your money from staying at a fancy resort for $300 a night as there are many, many good places to eat in this area. Use that money like we did to Scuba, Snorkel and get a very nice 90 minute massage that totally relaxes your senses.

Make sure to drive down highway 30 on Honoapillini highway and go to Papalua Wayside Park. You can park your Jeep (make sure to rent a Jeep - it will come in handy more than you know plus you can take of the top) right on the sandy beaches and be all alone as we were. There was some great snorkeling too!

We also did the road to Hana. If have never done it before, it sure is a site to see (bring camera). The drive is about 2-3 hours each way if you go all the way to the seven pools so make sure to leave early. Plan this as an All Day trip because it really is a 'Day' trip. Then on your way back Stop at Mama's Fish house for dinner. Good Food. Make sure to get the Trip to Hana CD for the drive. You can get it just about any tourist stop.

We will surely come back to the Makani Sands as it was centrally located to close everything.

The photos are taken with my camera from our balcony. Again, don't waste your money at the big resorts. Save your money and come back again sooner!!!

My husband and I enjoyed the makani sands. The condos are alittle old but the condos are so close to the water old is ok. The condos have everything one needs for a vacation even a boogie board and chairs and cooler. The water was rough when we were there so swimming was out of the question. The ocean was rough because of the earth quake of the coast of Tongo. We will stay at the Makani Sands again.

We had a great time at the Makani Sands Condos. Great location, clean, and right on the water. We actually fell asleep every night to crashing waves. We stayed in condo 309, and noticed it wasn't the most updated condo, we are very contemporary in our tastes, but it was a perfect fit for 5 of us. Two couples and a bachelor! We were very close to everything we wanted to do, just a Jeep trip away. The people there were nice too. Easy going. However, don't jump in the pool after 10:00. they are serious about that as two of us found out. Not a big deal though. I would stay here again, but maybe in room 310-I peaked in and it was much more modern. But either way, a great location, clean, and had many amenities provided for us....laundry detergent, snorkels, boogie board, etc...stayed 5 nights jan.17-22

First time at this condo but many times to Maui. The view and grounds were very beautiful. Stayed in unit 310 which is the largest in the complex in March 2005. The ocean did not disappoint and the pounding of the surf lulled us to sleep nightly. The condo is large and roomy and does have A/C which we did not need to use as the trade winds cooled things off nicely. The condo was not as clean as expected with lots of stains on the furniture and carpets. So many guests have taken its toll! We are very happy that the owners still continue to rent out their paradise home to share with all of us. Do not think I could do it? For the price, view and memories this condo was worth it!
