“Maui Birthday”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

My wife and I stayed a week in unit 109 for my 62nd birthday and loved every minute we were there!! It was set up for us by our friend Candace Horton, who manages some of the units for the owners. She is an excellent source of info for the whole island!
Our unit was in superior condition and right above the beach where the sea turtles swim. Even snorkeling gear was provided! The views of Molakai and Lanai were mesmerizing. We had a great time there, one week was not long enough.

We stayed for 30 days in condo 302. Debbie, the manager, is great to work with when booking and when staying there. The pros were of course the location and views which cannot be beat. The condo was well equipped in the kitchen and there was plenty of room for storing suitcases and clothes. The furniture on the patio was really comfortable and we spent lots of time there reading and watching the ocean. The bathrooms were upgraded which was great. The chief complaints we had was that the bed was terribly uncomfortable. It was like laying on a piece of cardboard over a bunch of springs. We could hardly wait to get out of it in the morning. My husband ended up with his back spasming for the week before we came home which meant he was not able to do anything so he spent the last week of our vacation in the chair on the lanai because the couch was not real comfortable either. We would also suggest getting a decent-sized lamp for the bedroom. Were it not for the bed we would have really enjoyed staying in this condo.

Mahalo for staying with us! We hear from many guests just how special the views are from our units. We also appreciate the feedback on specific units. Since this review was posted, the owner of this unit has replaced the mattress in 2015. Guests report that the new mattress is quite comfortable!

Aloha and we hope to see you back with us soon!

We stayed in condo 310 for 11 nights .. It was great.. Outstanding view of water, whales and turtles!! We saw more whale activity from our lanai than our paid whale watching trip !! Very well maintained building and unit. Attended the pupu party on Friday night, lots of fun. Other than the lack of space for groceries, it was perfect. Close to amenities and nearby boardwalk .. Would go back again !!

My husband and I and another couple stayed here in February for 5 nights in unit 306. This unit was well equipped and all the furnishings were very comfortable. The only problem was the street noise. As the unit does not have air conditioning and only fans, we needed to sleep with the windows open. Both bedrooms face the street so the 5 am wake up call from the rooster with a sore throat as well as the traffic was not perfect. I did put in my ear plugs after the first night and that helped. Other than the traffic we really enjoyed this location for snorkeling, beaches, farmers market and groceries. The street does make things busy so if you are wanting peace and quiet, this is not the place. The view from the lanai was breathtaking and that is where we spent a lot of time whale watching and turtle watching. The beach was not swimable for most of the time due to wave conditions but fun to be at none the less. The condo has everything you need for a day at the beach which is really appreciated. We did not participate in the Friday Pupus potluck as it was our last night but it looked like it would have been tons of fun.

Room Tip: With no air conditioning the higher the better to catch some breeze.

Mahalo for staying with us!! We are glad you had a wonderful time. The Kulakane and its neighboring properties are in an area of the island that has a small town feel, complete with the sounds of everyday Hawaiian living. Yes that sometimes includes a rooster nearby, and the noise of cars going by. Most of our guests appreciate the neighbohood feel that is more in the spirit of ohana (family) than you will find at the typical resort property.

Most properties on the West side of Maui do not have air conditioning, as the ocean breezes cool the homes. This is a matter of personal preference, butmost of our guests find it pleasant witout the a/c. First floor units are actually cooler on the warmer days since heat rises.

Again Mahalo for staying with us and we hope to see you again soon!!

Came to the hotel greeted with my name which i thought was nice and personal. Apartments directly in front of sea and very relaxing.

Bedroom lights were not working and had cheap lamps instead. The bedrooms were horrible, old, uncomfortable beds, dark cold room.

No air conditioning in rooms

i used the laundry facilities which i paid for and staff kept turning off my machine to dry my clothes and runners.

Terrible place , would not stay here again

Mahalo (thank you) for staying with us at the Kulakane. We are sorry to hear that your unit at the Kulakane did not meet your expectations. We followed up with our rental manager, Debbie, but she was not told of any concerns regarding the unit. Each unit is individually owned and uniquely furnished, and if Debbie is made aware of maintenance concerns they are remedied immediately. We also were not aware of the issue with the dryers, but that has not occured previously. We are following up to investigate.

We respect your opinion but note that this is the only one-star review we have EVER received. As one of the owners on property, I can tell you that my friends and family have always LOVED staying at the Kulakane and have returned again and again. In fact, most of our guests are return guests and our property enjoys an occupancy rate of nearly 90%.

Thank you again for your honest feedback. While we believe we have a great vacation property, we always welcome the opportunity to improve.

We actually own a place across the street from Kulakane but we are having plumbing issues so we we're put up here for five days. What luck!!! Unit 205 is beautiful, comfy and full of the aloha spirit. The turtle viewing is incredible as well as the whales watching . Do be aware that the beach in front is not Sandy but you can snorkel, just watch out for the coral. I wouldn't recommend this for families because of that but for adults it is excellent. No restaurant or bar but enough of this close by.

Room Tip: All rooms are ocean front, no elevator.

The view from this resort is amazing and breathtaking. Love the fact that it is walking distances to small local market and shops. Any issue with my room they sent out someone right away. Very friendly staff and it's family own. Highly recommend..

P.S. the bed is very conformable.
