“The best of the best vacation wise.”

Everything about this vacation is Awesome. Location and beach front is the best. Westin vacation rentals accomodations and grounds are superb. Pools and grounds are great at both North and South villas. Can get a little crowded at times, but the is to be expected. These are really family orientated places and everyone wants to be around the pool to watch for their kids. The one thing I must say is that they are catering more and more towards people with 'money' with their many cabanas taking front row at the poolside, and for those that can not afford to rent these, we are stuck behind those and behind those that 'towel' save their spots under the few shade umbrellas (so harder pool view) and roastable in the sun! Shuttle buses to and from other Westin hotels and Lahaina are exceptional. We like the fact that the Westin Villas have things for kids to do that are relatively cheap, but as our girls are teenagers now, would appreciate a little more for that age group to do as they do not want to sit by the pool all the time. Although the Westin shuttle buses are there for them to get around to shopping areas etc., we do not like them the 'spend' all the time. Activities are very expensive i.e. surfing/paddle boarding etc/zip lining/horseback riding especially when you have to tip on top of already overpriced activity. When you have 4 people in a family who all want to do stuff it can end up being very costly indeed. Variety of dining out places within the Westin vacinity or Lahaina are plently and can vary greatly in price. Depends on kind of food you want to eat and what you want to pay, but I would say there is something for everyone. We mostly cook at the villas, either in the room or bbq. Price of food at grocery stores is generally expensive where ever you go but that it because it is Maui and most stuff is shipped in. We generally stop off at Costco when getting off the plane and stock up for our two weeks before making the drive out to Kaanapali. Can not rate Spa or any other kind of pampering (i.e. poolside service) as we generally can not afford to do this kind of stuff.

Room Tip: Basically you have an ocean view from all rooms in the North building. Might not be ocean front, bu...

Beach and location are great! Rooms are top shelf. Resort is beautiful. Pools are crowded. Restaurants have good food but are limited. You do have access to the Starwood Resorts nearby or you can wander next door to the Castaway.

Most of the staff are wonderful, some better than that. In particular Daisy at the Pool Bar, Ryan at the pool, Bengie in the Restaurant, and Jonah at Spa who saved us from one of the weakest room changing policies in any hotel.

Do not let them put you close to the loading dock. Some genius has installed a generator/compressor that violates all of the noise pollution laws of any resort. If they put you in an insufferable room and you need to change you must leave at 10 am and wait until 4:00 pm, in your car, or practicing your best homeless act. We did get an upgrade but lost a day.

Ok homeless in Hawaii, I can think of worse things! Good experience overall but expected better from Westin.

Room Tip: Stay away from that generator.

Maui was the 3rd leg of our 2 week journey. This was our second visit in 2 years to Maui. I was very pleased with the accommodations and grounds here. Staff was great and the unit was excellent. Our last trip was at the Marriott. I would give the Westin at least a 1/2 star better rating
only because it's a little quieter on this side of Black Rock. As far as it being windy on this side of the rock. It's Hawaii. The trade winds are going to blow.

I feel that I must include a disclaimer that we are not the type that seeks out or enjoys staying at large resorts. That said, the resort is quite nice, clean, and the staff is very helpful and polite. We had an island view, one bedroom villa for a 5 night stay in Building 4 (south complex). The one bedroom villa was spacious and very clean. It showed some wear and tear, but I would rate it overall a 9 out of 10.
Onto the resort itself. As I mentioned before, we are not the type that enjoys spending time with lots and lots of people around. Everything is crowded. If you enjoy interacting with lots of people, then this might be the place for you. We felt that the staff was very pleasant. We did not have a single bad experience (from check-in to check-out). The resort has lot of choices for on-site activities that are geared for families (scuba lessons, ukulele lessons, etc.). There seems to be something going on at all times. But, if you are a family that is looking for that type of experience, be prepared to shell out some serious dough. That is the part that kills me about these places, everything is so expensive. But, if you want to visit on the cheap, simply opt out of those activities, and buy your groceries at the Safeway (avoid Foodland) and prepare your own meals.
The Ka’anapali beach at the resort is nice, but expect to have lots of people around you. There is decent snorkeling right off the beach, but not as nice as say Honolua bay. Also, there was a lot of trash at the beach. We saw lots of cigarette butts (yup, expect a few folks to smoke at the beach), broken glass, and get this, a used condom (nasty)! Also, lots of folks on the cell phones! What is up with people that feel that they need to check in with the office and conduct 30 minutes of business at the beach? So, although we did go to the beach at the resort a handful of times out of convenience, we mostly drove to the north and to the south to less crowded beaches.
So, why did we go to the Westin if we dislike that type of resort? We went there because I received an invitation to experience the property for a reduced price without the obligation of attending a sales presentation. But, predictably upon checking-in with the concierge, we were lightly pressured to attend the 90 minute presentation. I tried to decline it many times. Finally, the concierge said that she could sign us up for the tour, and then we could decide whether or not to attend. To be polite, we agreed. After not showing up to the appointment, we received a call from the concierge who was quite upset over us missing the appointment and wanted us to reschedule! So, unless you are prepared to spend 90 minutes in a sales presentation (for an additional $100 resort credit), I suggest that you stick to your guns and decline the appointment altogether.
Overall Impressions: Price = Very pricey; Beach = crowded, dirty, but good nice snorkeling; Pool areas = sorry we skipped those; Cleanliness = both the grounds and the interiors were very well kept; Guest Types = lots of families with kids, lots of older couples, some newlyweds; Guest Behavior = Lots of happy families/kids/folks just simply enjoying the place…other than the cell phone users and few smokers, everyone was super polite.
So, although I would never purchase a timeshare, or book at full price, if we receive another invitation to this property, we would seriously consider returning to it. We did enjoy the accommodations (one room villa).

My husband and I just returned last night from 5 nights at this terrific resort. The grounds are beautiful, on Ka'anapali Beach, one of the most beautiful in the world, I'm sure. Snorkeling right off the shore is outstanding. Kayaking and paddle-boarding are both available, both very fun and safe. Cabanas are available to rent around the pool/beach area. We had every intention of leaving in the late afternoons to explore other areas, but would find that the resort is so inviting that it's hard to leave! Also, the $4 mai-tai special at happy hour is the best deal around! The restaurants we utilized are good, not great, service is usually good. The staff is very helpful and pleasant, for the most part. The rooms are large and kitchens are stocked nicely. We had an outstanding stay and would happily return.

Room Tip: We were positioned at the very end of a hallway, so very little foot traffic passing by our door. H...

We've stayed at the Villas now three times, all three booked through Naomi at Maui Hawaii Vacations (Google it). Naomi is a reseller of sorts and the benefits of going through her, I've found:

* great prices (equivalent or better to buying someone's timeshare directly)
* fully legit; the Westin crew all know Naomi
* daily maid service (not necessarily included)
* free parking
* a named contact when/if you need something -- which we did, and which Naomi really helped with (see below)

Three sections to this review:

(1) Why we stay at the villas (pros)

Note: we are a family of now five, with young kids. This resort is unmatched in all of Hawaii for that. I have desperately tried to find an equivalent resort in all of Hawaii (so we could go somewhere other than Maui), but keep coming up short. Here's why:

* It's on the beach. I want to see and hear the ocean when I'm in Hawaii. Many other condo resorts aren't.
* It has multiple pools.
* It has a slide in one of the pools -- HUGELY important for older kids.
* It has a great kiddie pool -- the "pirate ship" is awesome for young and old kids
* 2- or 3-room *condos* with kitchens and great bathrooms
* Daily maid service
* Despite all this it feels like a hotel -- which I want on vacation. It has restaurants on site. You can get drinks at the pool. There are on-site stores and activities. You can get room service. It has a spa. A concierge. Etc.

(2) Cons

Yes, the beach is rocky a few meters out. In fact I had a horrible experience in gashing my foot on the coral last trip. But the sand is fine and the waves are play-able. (And, frankly, even Kapalua Beach has tons of coral a few meters out.)

I dunno, every other con seems pretty minimal. Keep reading for a tip regarding 'ocean views.'

(3) Watch out for "Ocean View"

WATCH OUT for "ocean view" rooms. Our first two trips we booked a standard room and got (a) an inside room with no ocean view and then (b) an inside room that had a glimpse of the ocean. But in either case we could look out from our balcony over the inside of the resort, see the lights of the pool at night, hear the music at the resort. It still felt like vacation.

THIS trip we "upgraded" to an ocean view and were horrified to find that the ocean view, yes, gives you an ocean view, but almost certainly guarantees you a view to the outside of the resort. This means in addition to the ocean -- over the trees -- you will see the highway, the Dollar Rent-a-Car, etc. And you will HEAR the highway.

We complained to Naomi and the front desk about this room. With young kids we eat on our patio almost every night, and this destroyed that experience. Unfortunately it took two nights to move us, and the first front desk manager (Jasmine) was very unhelpful -- mostly in not clearly communicating with us and in offering us lesser rooms. (E.g., another "ocean view" literally could not see the ocean it was so far back and so blocked by trees; and another room that overlooked the parking lot.) Eventually thanks to the assistant front-desk manager (Mark) and help from Naomi -- who on a Saturday both emailed and called us numerous times to try and find something -- we were put in a great room that exceeded expectations. I would have been fine with our prior non-oceanview room (with a glimpse). But what really impressed me with Mark was how well he communicated with me. Where Jasmine made it so I had to nag and plead for every detail, Mark was effusive in letting me know what was going on.

So my tip would be to cautiously opt for the oceanview. If you can't guarantee you'll be on the inside, it's really not worth it. But: if you just want to see the ocean and not sit out on your patio, then the outside might be fine.

Overall this trip was 'okay' thanks to our false start. Not unpacking for two days and having to negotiate on the phone with Westin staff was pretty un-fun. But Mark and Naomi were able to help salvage our last five days, and both deserve thanks for that.

Room Tip: "Oceanfront" risks a view of the highway. North and South towers seem pretty equivalent. S...

Had a great time, staff was very friendly, weather was great and had a most enjoyable time. Westin Hotels do take good care of their guests and the accommodations are always wonderful. The location is right on the beach. Lots of lounge chairs at the pool. More than enough for all the guests. Enjoy.

Room Tip: We had a room with a mountain view, but really, how much time do you spend in your room when you are...
