My wife and I with two teenagers went to the Westin Villa Resorts during Spring Break (March 28th thru April 4th) we are Starwood Vacation owners and had booked the Maui resort over 8 months ago during this time frame.

We live in NJ and our flight was out of JFK (TIP – Smart Park was great for parking!) on Saturday and we stayed at the LA Westin that night and took an early flight out of LAX the next morning arriving at OGG by 11am on Sunday.

We rented a car (Dodge Journey, very nice) and were at the resort by 1pm. Our room was ready when we arrived, we had gotten the one bedroom premium villa, having stayed at other Westin Vacation properties we knew exactly what we were getting, separate bedroom, large bathroom, full size kitchen, washer/dryer, (TIP – bring ½ the clothes you think you need and do some laundry) dining area and large balcony. Upon arrival we were told that we were upgraded to an Ocean View room, however the Ocean View was a bit of a stretch, had to stay on one side of the balcony to get the view, straight across you were looking into the North building. We tried for another room but the resort was booked for spring break and made the best of the view, after all it was located on the fourth floor not 1st facing the pirate pool.

The first thing we noticed while we were there was the wind. Very windy with gusts to 60mph and light rain showers on and off the entire week. The wind whipped the sand on the beach into your face and the rain was whipped around also. You can not do anything about the weather but it detracted from our experience of Maui. The wife and daughter went to the spa for pedicures and the employees there told her that this type of wind was very unusual for Hawaii. When the sun did come out and the wind died down a bit (Thursday) our Maui adventure truly began.

The resort was full of families with smaller children (spring break) which really didn’t bother us much. As parents of four older children we knew exactly what some of the other parents were going through, good and bad. Not sure about other weeks but if you are looking for a romantic getaway for two, I would think twice about going here or check posts that are not during spring break time.

We stocked up at the Safeway down the street in Lahaina, grilling foods, produce, water, cereal, beer & wine etc…. (TIP - print out the Safeway club application from the website before you go, fill it out, at check out hand them the application you get a club card on the spot and the discounts, saved over a $100.00 on our weeks order)

The grounds are beautiful and centered perfectly along the Maui coast with spectacular sunsets and great location among other resorts. It was very crowded here and challenging to get a pool chair (Spring Break) - started at 7am and still only got second tier seating, which was fine. When the chairs are all taken, go the beach, put your towel down and enjoy the Ocean and beach (a little on the small side) if you want you can take the shuttle to the other Westin down the road by Whalers Village and use the beach there, more sand and resort like. The pools themselves we were a little disappointing, no swim up bar and small.
(TIP – Go to the Welcome to your Vacation activity and find out about what Spa, Yoga and Bar specials that they will be running that week)

If you enjoy jogging/walking, the Beach walk is perfect, jogging early in the morning watching rainbows over the Pacific – Wonderful. There are two gyms on the property with treadmills, elliptical, etc... The equipment was sufficient but get there early if you want an early morning workout, place was packed by 6am.

There are plenty of grills, but they were always packed and if you wanted to use them, you had to wait your turn and bring the food back to your room; all the outdoor tables were taken most of the time we were there. Still everyone was polite and courteous, stories, recipes and beers were swapped while waiting.

Here is a brief description of what we did outside of the resort booked through the concierge service which was exceptional:
• Cruiser Phil’s Sunrise Volcano Bike Ride – A must – family had a great Experience, thank you Thomas and Jonathan
• Teralani Sunset Whale Watch Cruise – Pay the little bit extra, worth every penny, clean sturdy catamaran, food and drink – crew was FANTASTIC
• Westin Luau – Good for your first Luau – had fun, we were able to upgrade and was not disappointed with the show or food – Open Bar
Our own Adventures:
• Hana Highway – This is something to check off that I did it in life – doubt I would want to again. When we were able to park somewhere the sites were pretty amazing.
• Town of Paia – If you go to Hana you will pass through this town, find the public parking and enjoy this quaint town. Check out Café Mambo (Khula Pork fajitas) and Moana Café (Anything for breakfast!)

We can’t wait to get back to Hawaii, absolutely fantastic; the Westin Ocean Villas were very nice; just missing something; maybe it was the lack of an Entertainment Staff pool side, swim up bar w/larger pool- something. Would definitely would stay here again, but next trip we will try another Westin Hawaii property.

Everything was the best! The 2 bd suite was perfect for us (could sleep 8). The separate one bedroom "lock off" was just right for the 'kids' with their 2 kids, while gran & gramps got the luxury of the huge bedroom/bath. Living & dining are in the middle. Plus, after our stop at Costco by the airport, we needed the two full size refrigerators, as each side has a kitchen/kitchenette. The dining table was big enough, too.

We did eat out, but with a 2 & a 3 yr old, eating in with the full kitchen was great. The grill area by the Pirate Pool was wonderful and, of maybe 6 grills, two of them had their own table with overhead covering. Had a party out there one evening. On most nights it's a gathering place to talk & swap easy grill recipies with the other travelers. Besides, the guys cooked!!

Our first assigned unit was ground level with a path to a pool. If we had teenagers, nice. But ours are not. So we asked for an upper unit (came with 2 balconies) and the ocean view was amazing from there. Thank you Westin...

My husband tells everyone he spent his vacation in 16 inches of water...and he did. At least part of every day. The little ones loved the Pirate pool. We tried all of them, tho. Walked across the street to the Sugar Cane Train. And the whales were popping! Our son-in-law snorkled way out (great snorkeling & beach) and came near a baby whale - wondered where momma was, and (where's the orchestra?) up she came from the deep....til the baby straddled her back. Awesome!

The new restaurant in walking distance on the boardwalk is open. Dukes has the best views! Right on the boardwalk by the beach. Mostly open air, ate there 3 times. Great food. Bar, too.

I am getting sooo homesick for Maui now. This was a truely great place for a family vacation. Altho, most of the people we talked to were couples. Don't hesitate to go. Loved these villas... the only downside is - we are not there now.

We spent a week from March 20 to March 27 2010 in building number 6. Our room was a time share trade for our unit in Florida with Starwood Resorts.

This room was nothing compared to our Florida resort in many ways.

Here is the good part:
Location of the resort is ideal. Right on a nice beach, nicely maintained public areas. Family friendly in the sense that there were kids all over the place.

Here are the bad parts:
Our room was a studio directly above the lobby. We had a view of the grounds and if you stood on top of a ladder in your room maybe you would catch a bit of the ocean. The balcony was tiny with 2 chairs and a small table. Barely enough room to sit on for one never mind two.

The room had a kitchenette where you can cook breakfast but no real space to even put the coffee maker on a flat surface and the toaster to make bread at the same time. The dishes were in cabinets too high to reach and again you needed a ladder to reach most glassware, etc. The knives were relatively dull that could cut bread at the best.

The design of the room was such that it had a small table for 2 to sit on near the balcony. If you made use of the pull out couch then there is no room at all for anyone to move around. The closet in the room is barely big enough to put one bag into it.

The bathrooms is interesting since all doors are glass and when you wake up the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, unless you do not want to wake anyone up you are all seeing the light come through.

The shower area had a door that opened directly towards the wall and the door therefore getting in and out of the shower was a challenge.

I guess the designer who created the space did not think of functionality of the space when they created this room design.

The walls are thin and you can hear the people above you and next door. Since we were the last unit before the elevators you could hear the elevators open and close all night, plus there was a constant sound of water running from some piping in the staff elevator area piping.

When the door to the balcony is open at night you hear the waterfall in front of the lobby and that sounds like a faucet running and not the pleasant sounds of a waterfall to help ease you to sleep. Outside on the entry area is the delivery docks and you can hear the trucks coming and going delivering supplies to the complex. In the morning you can hear the kids screaming early as they go about the complex with their parents who woke up early and making sure the rest of us cannot sleep.

The food is mediocre at best. At the bar by the pool the service is slow. The main restaurant is open only Thursday-Sunday night. So you are basically stuck with bar food the rest of the time.

The small grocery in the building is overpriced beyond belief. A hard boiled egg is 99 cents and a small box of cereal is $1.99 per box when outside is a dozed of the same boxes for $6.00. Sandwiches are $9.00 while outside the same can be had for $5.00. Other then emergencies, do not waste your money here.

Staffing is only friendly here if you start speaking to them otherwise they ignore you completely. Other places on the islands have staff saying hello to you just as they pass you.

Overall the only reason I would return is the location of the complex, and I would certainly demand a better unit for my exchange.

By the way they do take guests here who pay by the night, but I would tell you to go to the Sheraton down the road which has better service and same if not better units all ocean view unlike here where most units do not have a view of anything but the other building across the lawns.

Stayed for a week as a guest of an owner March 13-20. We had adjoining rooms. We had studio and it was comfortable for 2, nice layout and great view on balcony of mountains and beach. We could watch whales morning and evening from balcony. Used the swimming pools and hottubs and were both enjoyable not overly crowded obn any occasion. Beach area was very enjoyable and clean. I liked the towel cards that were issued - just traded cards for towels with towel stand on arrival and throughout stay trade out towel for towel as needed and on last day - traded towels for towel card to be turned back in to front desk upon checkout. Worked very well for us. Also enjoyed the local arts and crafts that were set up under the tent between the north and south villas. Very unique items from art -jewely -soap - dishes, etc. and of very good quality. Checkin and checkout without a big hassle - it appeared there was extra staff available during the rush hours of 10 am and 4 pm and it was certainly appreciated. Also the interhotel shuttles and the Lahaina shuttle worked out great for us also. A definite plus and we used it the entire time we were there. Since it was March Madness the guys really enjoyed the TV's at the poolside bars so that they could watch their games and spend time with wives and chidren. Something for everyone.
