““A very old building with the only plus of being right on the ocean - Maui Sands #5F””
Reviewed 25 January 2015 for a stay in December 2014

So I know that this is a very long review, but it is 100% honest and FULL of useful info for you. Take the time to read this and you won't be disappointed.

We booked the Maui Sands #5F for our stay in Maui. We wanted to keep the cost lower than a hotel stay so we decided to go with a VRBO rental for the first time. We were very sceptical about doing this but we know many people who have had a great and less expensive holiday using VRBOs. We are a family of 4 – 2 adults, 2 children (age 15 boy & 12 yr old girl) so we needed enough beds and space as well. Our daughter loves the ocean and the beach so we wanted something close to both of those.

We found Maui Sands #5F and checked it out on Tripadvisor. Many people who had reviewed it were happy with their stay there so after much thought we all decided to book at the Maui Sands #5F.

When we arrived at the condo we were shocked! It was certainly a complex and building built in the 1960’s and it was showing its age. The building we stayed in was a 2-storey very sad looking place. The paint and wood were rotting away in places, the windows were louvre windows from the 1960’s, the stairs were bare cement and the balcony to our condo had carpet that was constantly wet, stained and pulling away from the foundation of the balcony. We were not impressed at all and very sceptical of what the inside would look like. My husband was already thinking about where else we could go and stay during the busy holiday season on Maui.
We all held our breath when we opened the door and were pleased/surprised at what we saw. It certainly looked like it had been remodelled fairly recently and did not look like the outside of the building but it did actually look like the pictures on Tripadvisor. The tile throughout the apartment was very nice. The furniture was fairly new and in the tropical décor. We used what we are sure was a double bed and then a single bed. Both beds were comfy with what we thought was memory foam on them. Our son opted for the fold out couch. This did not have the memory foam and he could easily feel the bar below his back. Thankfully he is a very sound sleeper and he did sleep thru the discomfort. The kitchen was small with a full sized fridge, sink, dishwasher and an older style oven that had no info on the dials but someone had used a label maker to tape the info above the dials. The paint was old-style pink to match the tropical theme. Our teen was thrilled to see the large older model large TV (that we never used) and that we had access to the wi-fi in the room. The ad had mentioned beach towels and chairs & boogie boards. We only ever found the chairs – no towels or boards to be seen.

The lanai was THE best part of the 2 bedroom/1 bath apartment. It was furnished with 1 chaise, 1 table and 4 chairs. We spent time every morning watching the resident turtles fight the waves and were treated to many whale sighting in the distance. We were also treated to many beautiful sunsets and gorgeous starry nights. The ocean was literally right off of the balcony. There were steps down to the ocean and my daughter and I spent time down there shell searching. My hubby tried to swim near one of the turtles but the surf there was fairly rough and he was concerned with getting caught and smacked into the reef. We knew that there was no beach at the complex but that there was one a short walk away. We found a beach on the other side of the island that we fell in love with so we never did take the walk to the nearby beach.

A few reviews we read mentioned thin walls and being woken up by loud noises and crying babies etc. We found this apartment to be VERY noisy! I am not sure if it is from the louvre windows or thin walls but we could clearly heard road traffic, people chatting outside and people walking past our windows. Ok people walking by we get but with the age of the building their footsteps sounded more like they were stomping by! Of course this was always at the early hour of 7am! I am the type of person who needs a window open while sleeping. My hubby is a very light sleeper and can easily have the window open in our Calgary home but here the noises were so loud and amplified that he had a hard time sleeping even with the louvre widows closed. We loved the sound of the ocean whooshing but for our 15 yr old who decided to stay in the living room it did get very loud even with the windows and thin linen drapes closed.

We were given a parking space. It was located in a small area right in front of the building. To get to it we had to pass thru a fairly narrow space between 2 spots and the garbage space as well. During the height of the holiday, someone decided it was ok to double park on the one side of the garbage space. Thankfully the car on the other side of the narrow opening was not there or we would have been blocked in. Our space was very narrow and we were glad we had a small car as the motorcycle parking was right across from the space and we had to maneuver around that every time we backed into the space. We tried to park the car in front first and narrowly missed the poles protecting the motorcycle parking area.

We are sure that the maintenance man lives right next door to 5F. He would leave bright and early in the am with a very full belt of keys jingling away and return later at night. This is when we were treated to his daily smoking marijuana in his apartment – we could clearly smell it in our room!

We found the condo to be clean. There were a few ant traps in the kitchen but we were never treated to an ant sighting inside the condo. However, the people below us were treated to cockroaches! They had to leave their condo for a day to fumigate. We never saw the family after that so I don’t know if they returned to the condo or found another place to stay.

The condo is located in Honokowai. The area is an older area of Maui and we found the nearby grocery store was THE busiest grocery store I have ever been in. It did not matter what time of day or which day we stopped in the place was packed!

We booked thru Chase’N Rainbows and did not have an issue with them at all. We booked the condo about 8 months in advance because we knew that we needed to book early for the busy Christmas season.

Would we return here? No. We would try other places before returning to the Maui Sands.
Was it worth the $255/night plus taxes, cleaning fee & security deposit? Good question. Yes it was cheaper than going to a resort and all we really did was use the condo as a place to sleep and eat breakfast.

Would I recommend this place to you? No. I would recommend staying on a different part of the island altogether. We spent some time at a friend’s place in Kihei and MUCH preferred that area of town. It had many different restaurants to walk to (which Maui Sands did not have). Kihei was more a low key place where Honokowai was surrounded by older condo buildings and huge lovely resorts.

“Excellent oceanfront location, wish swimming & snorkeling were more convenient”
Reviewed 27 March 2014 for a stay in March 2014

We enjoyed our stay at this condo, primarily for its beautiful oceanfront location on West Maui. The second-floor lanai was spacious and private, and the waves were loud! The condo also is within walking distance of two grocery stores and many small restaurants for eat-in and take-out meals. The condo was clean and the kitchen was well-supplied with dishes and small appliances. This condo was rented through the property management company Chas'n Rainbows and it was easy to work with them. Wireless access worked fine. On the less positive side, this location is not great for swimming and snorkeling. There is a sea wall in front of the condo and no beach. There were two rock shelves that became visible at low-tide, when you could venture out into the water a bit. However I was reluctant to climb over the second rock shelf further out to get to water that was more that waist-deep, although a few intrepid people did. Snorkeliing was limited for the same reasons. There was a small sandy beach a couple of buildings down, but there were lots of rocks in the water and not many people swimming there. I have been spoiled by previous stays on Kauai where snorkeling and swimming are within a short walk, so that part of the location was disappointing. There are two small bedrooms, with the largest bed a double-size and that was uncomfortable for us. The condo itself is in a building that is a bit older and worn on the outside. The floors were all ceramic tile, which is easy to clean but very slippery when wet. The TV in the living room was an old-fashioned solid state TV that took about 10 minutes to warm up with a clear picture, and there was no remote control. We didn't come to Maui to watch TV, but this is a basic part of any rental unit that should have been working. Other condos we have rented had a variety of beach gear that you could borrow, but this place had no gear and no beach towels so remember to bring your own. Lastly, the bedroom walls were a little thin and we were awakened by a fussy baby in the unit next door several times during the night. This was our first time on Maui, and if we return I think we will try a different location but would recommend this condo for those who love a great ocean view and nonstop crashing waves, and prefer to be within a more populated area with easy access to food.
