Description: Enjoy the exciting, ancient art of teppanyaki cooking at the restaurant voted number 1 Japanese restaurant on Maui. Teppanyaki is derived from "teppan" which means iron plate and "yaki" which means grilled. At Kobe, it is delivered with the style and grace of a Japanese country inn. Blend in the gentle aloha of Hawaii, you will experience an evening where terrific food and entertainment are the perfect combination. After a delicious bowl of shabu-shabu soup, your teppan chef will begin to cook up an entrée of dishes, right in front of you, cooking it to tasty perfection, while watching him do the "flaming onion volcano", one of their many culinary tricks. Another favorite at Kobe is to sit in the sunken sushi bar and order one of uncle Oku's fabulous daily specials and enjoy watching the chefs masterfully create their delicious sushi. Oku prides himself on the high quality of fresh fish he chooses from local vendors. Approximately 95% of Oku's fish comes from Hawaii, and the balance of his menu consists of exotic items imported from Japan. The restaurant décor features many historical ornaments and artifacts to provide an authentic feel of Japan, the mother country. Kobe Japanese Steak House & Oku's Sushi Bar delights visiting guests and Island locals alike. Come and join us for a great meal today!

We have a Kobe steakhouse where we live so we were excited to stumble upon this place since we love sushi and teppan!
Unfortunately, it wasn't nearly as good in more ways then one :(
First, the hostess NEVER broke a smile...poker face maybe?!?! Anyway, we ordered sushi and it was ok, not great but not bad either. Our chef was good, funny but a little hard to understand. He cooked our entrees and they were for the most part good. My filet Mignon was tender but very plain. The best part of my meal was the fried rice...it was very good.
As I left for the restroom, my shoes stuck to the floor which kind of freaked me out that this place may not be very clean. We were the first table sat that evening so no excuse for dirty floors.
We've eaten at many Steak/teppan restaurants from Benihana to Mikado and this place unfortunately did not measure up!

We chose this place for dinner our 1st night in Maui just to provide some entertainment for the kids. The teppanyaki of course entertained but the food itself, mediocre! My issue is the ventilation system in the whole 2-story restaurant. The grills create so much smoke so the air is thick.

The service from the waiters, eh! He forgot to give us our miso soups, iced water or any iced drink came with little to no ice, and he had to be reminded that we get dessert too.

We went here because the kids wanted sushi and it was close to where we were staying. The sushi was good, a little on the expensive side, but the service was awful. If it hadn't been that we were hungry and had started to order I would have gotten up and left. It took forever for all of us to get our food, and when the kids ordered some more rolls it took 20 minutes to get them. Find another sushi restaurant if you are in the mood for sushi. Not worth the wait, no atmosphere and poor service.

My kids love the experience & food at this type of place (Benihana style) so we go. The food is tasty and the prices, for Maui, are reasonable. The hostess staff is terrible, however, and the building itself quite unappealing. During our recent trip to Maui we went here twice (for the kids). The first time we were seated relatively quickly but the seemingly clueless waitress brought us up a narrow staircase to the upper level, looked around and said, "uh...wait here." So we stood there for 10 minutes or so unsure what to do until she finally came back and told us to sit down. OK; awkward and weird at best. The upstairs is awful...dark, poor ventilation...we had a very old looking large white air conduit (think 1960's hairdryer tube) blowing air in our faces (designed to alleviate the smoke from the cooking table) for the entire meal. The 2nd visit was a disaster. Despite a confirmed reservation we sat waiting in the dingy lounge for almost 45 minutes. Repeated complaints to the hostess brought nothing but a rude 'go and and leave if you don't like it' attitude. Visitors from the mainland are dealing with a 3 hour (minimum) time change - when you add hungry kids to that situation a long wait past a supposed reservation slot is a nightmare. After numerous complaints we were finally seated...only to have another lengthy wait for a cook to arrive...this did not happen until they got other diners in the door to complete the 8 person table set up. So in my opinion, a reservation here is meaningless. It is first come first served, and no service until they have assembled a full party of 8 to occupy a table. If that is your M.O., fine - but do NOT offer and accept reservations so that people like us who cannot wait are not tricked into thinking we have a set dinner time. The food and the cooks and the other service staff are fine...the hostess gang is surly...the old, dark, poorly ventilated no view building is not exactly what you go to Maui for.

The food was very tasteless, burnt, everyone at our table felt the same and had to pack their food to go with them. They don't marinate their meat and all the food is burnt, my son left hungry because there was nothing for him to eat except rice. We waited for almost an hour too before we got food cooked. Entertainment from a chef was good, but we go to a restaurant for good food not for an entertainment!!
