My wife and I did not plan to go to this show, but we went to an activities meeting at the resort we were staying at and we won a free ticket. So we decided to go and had a great time. If you decide to go, you need to read the play description before and after the play to understand what all that happened. It was very enjoyable and would not discourage anyone from going.

The history of Hawaii in music, dance. and dress. How the Portuguese, Chinese and Japanese moved to Hawaii and started working in the sugar cane fields.

This was the 5th time we have seen this show and still love every minute of it. Each time we have gone there have been subtle changes, but the overall performance remains unforgettibly constant. Take the time to see the show, you will not regret it.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Ulalena performance during our recent Maui vacation. It is what I’d describe as a “touchy feely” experience that tantalizes the senses. The show portrays the history and culture of the Hawaiian people, combining mythology, symbolism and historical events as told in creative song and dance. The music, singing and dancing, and acrobatics are all exceptional. The scene where they “make it rain” involves clever audience participation. It is very definitely an “out of the box” type of production that makes this performance very special. You can tell that the performers put their hearts and souls into the production. It is very moving at times.

As part of the performance the performers would go through the aisles several times, interacting with the audience. We had aisle seats which made the experience that much more enjoyable. The auditorium is relatively small, so there are no bad seats, but if you book early enough you can get a seat near the front, on the aisle. They have a seating chart online, but we called to book and confirm our seating arrangements. We opted for the show without the dinner. We didn’t like the timing for the combination show and dinner, and then we weren’t limited on our restaurant or menu choices.

Although they recommend this show for all ages, this is very definitely an adult performance. Some children were in the audience, and even though there is plenty to hear and see, it would be difficult for a small child to follow the story line, and they could quickly lose interest. It is also interesting that there are pictures posted for this show, since cameras and any video equipment are supposed to be prohibited.

The reviews are definitely mixed on this show. It seems you either loved it or hated it. It is definitely on the “artsy’ level as performances go. If you enjoy interpretive song and dance, Ulalena is a complete delight. It is not entirely a “Cirque de Soleil” performance as some have described; they have a couple acrobatic scenes during the performance, but that is not the majority of the show. If you like more of a main stream type of production, then I would recommend the Polynesian Cultural Center’s “HA, Breath of Life” show in Oahu. We thoroughly enjoyed that show as well. They both tell the Hawaiian story, just expressing it in different ways.
