“Good, affordable place north of Lahaina”
Reviewed 21 August 2014

The Kahana Villa is a "good" place to stay; I'd give it 3.5 stars; somewhere between average and very good. My mother and I stayed there and it was comfortable. She slept in the bedroom while I used the sofa-bed. It's a condo and has all the conveniences like kitchen, washer/dryer, dish-washer, and a large living room with dining room table (plus air-con and fans). The resort is very no-frills. There's no lobby, no guest amenities, no gym, no business center with computers; and the front desk has limited hours. If you need assistance and the front desk is closed, you have to talk to/see the property across the street.

Also, though the location says Lahaina, it's really not in Lahaina. It's in Napili-Honokowai, which is 10 miles north of Lahaina. Driving to Lahaina takes around 15 minutes as the highway is only 2 lanes (sometimes only 1 lane) and the speed is slow. So expect to be driving back and forth between the Villa and Lahaina for shopping and eating.

Also, request a room away from the highway if you're sensitive to noise.

Room Tip: Rooms closer to the beach are quieter.

Agree with other reviews.....it's easy to feel at home at Kahana Villas. The units are clean and well-maintained. They do not have the resort feel....they feel homey. It would be nice to have central air, but the window unit did alright. The parking was easy and close. The pool and jacuzzi were clean and not crowded. The beach across the street was accessible, and there is a board rental place at the Kahana sister resort on the beach, so very convenient. Very good beaches like Napili, Kapalua and DT Flemings are minutes away.

Only one issue: the front door to the unit is such that insects and lizards enter the unit easily. If one can acclimate to frequent "visitors" - then no worries.

Room Tip: The building farthest from the highway is probably best.

We stay in unit E-610 and rent it through VRBO online. Good unit. We've stayed twice and would again. To good size bedrooms. AC in both. Location is nice and quiet. Beach is across the street and nice. Lahaina, kaaanapali and Kapalua are all close. Would highly recommend.

I have stayed at the kahana villa before several times.
This time I was pleasantly surprised at the remodeled rooms.
I am a designer in LA . The cabinet design was point on. Before cabinet over sink
Was to low, had to move your head to open door. The cabinet designer made it more like home.
The color of the granite counter tops and cabinets make the kitchen and bathroom very warm and
Inviting. The tile flooring was ok. But very pleased. Cudos to management. Job well done

Room Tip: Make sure to get the remodeled rooms

Stayed here on a business trip and was pleasantly surprised at the size and location of the one bedroom suite considering the below average cost per night. The building is quiet, beach across the street, free parking for this suite and no extra charges for additional guests when my wife and daughter visited. It's no frills, could use a new couch, but lots of beach towels, a couple boogie boards and a patio out back and flat screen tv's in the living and bedrooms. Would definitely stay again.

We just returned from a week in Maui and stayed in unit F202 at Kahana Villa. This complex starts near the main Hwy on West Maui (Hwy 30_ and runs downhill to a lower, less traveled road that is near the beach and runs by the actual resorts. We had called one week in advance and requested unit F, as it is most distant unit from the busy, hwy 30, and based upon other reviews we had read on TA. We had hoped for a higher up unit with a better view of the ocean, but were pleased with the unit, overall. The unit appeared to have new furniture and a bed and was clean. The only issue we had with the unit was how the cooling works and this appeared to be more of a design issue. There is a large AC wall unit downstairs and no AC upstairs. The master bedroom is a loft overlooking the living area. The AC in the living room, although turned down to a low (63 degree setting), and with both downstairs and upstairs fans going full blast, did not push enough air upstairs to cool it sufficiently. We were fairly hot the first night. We subsequently requested a stand fan and placed it at the foot of the bed and that seemed to do the trick. The only downside was that it was constantly cold downstairs. I wondered if installation of one of the new-style wall air conditioners upstairs might easily resolve the imbalance between the two living areas. We could not open the patio door in the main door as our second floor unit was at ground level, so that would have created a security issue. Another minor issue was there seemed to be a disconnect between the front desk staff, who are not present all the time, and the resort across the street, that is the after hours contact for maintenance issues. We had stopped and talked the the desk clerk to request the stand fan and nothing happened. We were aware that a resort across the street was the contact point if the front desk was closed. They checked and said they had not gotten the request, so there appeared to be a disconnect. This happened a second time with a plugged toilet. Once the information was conveyed to the resort across the street, we got quick action. The grounds are nicely kept and the units are in a good area and not too far from Lahina, Napili, Kaanapali, etc.

Other thoughts: The beach across the road is not the greatest beach in the world. Not much beach to speak of when the tide is in. We found an ideal beach not to far south (towards Lahina) the locals told us about. They call it "Airport Beach" (used to be an airport there prior to the resorts being built). The Hawaiian name for the park is to long for me to remember, however there are three exits for Kaanapali and it is the northern most exit. It has a great restroom, shaded area for exercise, nice big and long sandy beach. Good swimming, lots of people snorkeling with fish just off the beach, paddle boarding, scuba people taking lessons. There is a grassy area, shade trees on the beach (you can get burned even in the shade). Little children should be with their parents as their is some wave-wash on the beach. There is a walk-way with a short walk to a restaurant. Good parking area, but would suggest you arrive no later than 10a.m., as you might have to wait for a spot to open.

There is a Costco right by the main airport. This is a good place to stop and purchase beach chairs. We checked at one resort behind Whaler's Village Mall and they want $50 per day to rent two chairs and a beach umbrella! We bought two beach chairs and re-sold them to a couple who were just arriving. We also bought chocolate macadamia nuts in a twelve pack with a carrying handle for just under $30 and hand carried it back on the plane as a personal item. Much cheaper than buying individual boxes in other stores. Lots of people were renting snorkeling gear from a place called, "Snorkel Bobs", but they also sell all kinds of beach stuff at Costco.

We found our "go to" breakfast place just off of the main shopping area in Lahaina (Front street) It is called "The Sunshine Cafe" and breakfast we very good and cheap. $5.50 to $8.00 average price. Tony is a wonderful host. Most would describe this as a "hole in the wall place", but one can't argue with good food and reasonable prices. Nearest cross street is Dickenson street. The shops open at 9a.m. in Lahaina. If you get into town by 8:15 you can normally find free parking right on Front Street near the restaurant.

Plan to pay for parking practically everywhere! $3-$5. There is public parking at the S end of the shopping district that is free and good for three hours. If you shop at Whaler's Village (also nice beaches behind Whalers Village Mall), get your parking validated by spending at least $20.

If you like authentic Hawaiian music, or want to learn about it, check out the "Slack Key Show" on Wednesday nights at a resort in the Napili area. These guys are great singers and can make a ukulele and guitar do things you would not believe. Very informal, more like a jam session with friends (which they are).

The Whale Foundation two hour whale trip was fun and we saw lots of whales. Check to make sure there are actual whales in the harbor area, as they leave Hawaiian waters sometime in March or April and head for Alaska to feed up with their babies.

Room Tip: Ask for unit F and try to get floor two or three.

Let me first say: This is NOT a hotel, it is a condo complex. If you are looking for weight room, daily service, hotel bar, active front desk, and whatever amenities people who gave poor reviews were hoping for, this is not the place for you. This is NOT in the mad rush of Kaanapali and Whaler's Village, but in a quiet section north of there. If you want crowds, water slides and umbrellas in your drinks, this is not the complex for you.

However, if you want a clean, fresh, updated condo in a mellow complex acros the street from a nice beach, quiet neighbors, a smallish but nice pool with BBQs, right on the bus line to take you EVERYWHERE, with easy access to Napili Bay, Kapalua, Lahaina, good smaller restaurants, and a "home away from home", this is an excellent choice. We loved it!

We lucked out with unit F-106, an updated, light and bright unit with a peek-a-boo ocean view. It was quiet, had plenty of towels, tissue, paper towels, cooking implements, dishes, laundry detergent and dish soap. The A/C unit worked very well, wifi was strong and free, and it felt like home each time we came back after a long day or evening of playing. The unit has a great breeze and we loved hearing the rain at night.

We have enjoyed Maui a fair number of times and stayed at a variety of properties. For us, this is a perfect little condo complex, where you quickly feel like you live there. It was great! Booked thru Expedia at the last minute, I suspect we could have gotten a better rate if we had planned ahead. But we felt so fortunate to stay here, without much knowledge of the place other than reviews.

Again, don't let your expectations of a big hotel on a busy resort beach get the best of you. The Kahana area is quiet, this property is a mid-rise condo complex, and many of the condos have owners who actually live there or are part time residents. Everyone seems to take pride in their unit and the complex, and although older, it it well maintained.

If you seek a quiet place for a week or two, want to feel like you are in your own condo at the beach, this is for you. My only issue is that I am trying to resolve a minor reservation issue in that my trip was cut a day short and my stay was pre-paid. I suspect that the manager will be getting back to me soon and I hope to get one day refunded. If not, I will still visit this nice little condo again.

Room Tip: Face the grass area and get a peek of the ocean. And end unit also would be quite nice for extra li...
