“sleep in your van down by the river”
Reviewed 18 July 2012

Seriously you would be better off to sleep in your rent car by the beach than waste time effort energy or resources to subject yourself to such filth possible exposue to black mold and disease that is founding this rundown neglected relic managed by Royal Lahaina. The management of the Royal Lahaina should refuse to manage the refuse called Kannapali Ocean Resort. It ski tarnish their reputation. No kidding stay in your car and if this is the only place in Maui to stay stay at home that will be better than to subject your body to somethings that can not be washed off or bad memories that can never be erased. I type this as I sit on the balcony of the place afraid to go in because of the condition and extreme heat in the unmaintained relic the Royal Lahaina chooses to call the Kannapali Ocean Resort. What a joke what a shame. The shame is yours should you choose to stay here

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights waiting for our timeshare check in. The room was just fine! Even a little Hawaiian atmoshere feel to it. The hallway to the room was quite worn out looking, but you get all of the resort features. I would go again!

We knew that this was going to be a budget hotel but when we got in our room there were only blankets on one of the two beds, the floor was sticky, the toilet was...full (seriously, I don't know how to say this in a politically correct way-someone else's bowel movement was in the toilet),there were ants on the counter, a cockroach in the shower, the shower was visibly dirty and the the ceiling in the shower was rotted away from water damage. We are by no means hotel snobs, but it was really gross.

The overall condition of the hotel is old and worn out, but it was the dirty part that got to us. There are no elevators which is inconvenient.

The hotel does sit in the corner of a nice resort and the beach is very nice. Its basically the dirty armpit of a nice report. The staff was friendly.

Room Tip: We stayed in an 'ocean view' room, which was a very loose description. We could see a sliver...

All of the reviews are accurate. Those who say it's a good budget value for Maui, as well as the ones who say it's a shame that it hasn't been improved. I only stayed here for 1 night on business. The room was adequate, but upon closer inspection it is on the rough side. This is Royal Lahaina's budget option, and they treat you like it as well. There are no elevators, so you will need to haul your stuff up the stairs. There does not seem to be bell service or any amenities offered for guests of the Ocean Inn. The beach however, is excellent. If your looking for a budget place to bring your kids to hang on the beach for a week, then this may be fine. If your booking your Maui honeymoon, look elsewhere! I honestly didn't like the other resorts here either. Lots of walking, and that's to pay resort prices in restaurants and bars. The only reason to stay here is for the beach. A previous reviewer posted that there was good snorkelling. I'm not sure what there experience is, but this was not a good snorkelling locale, it is all sand, no reef, so no fish. It is "easy" snorkelling due to calm and clear waters, but nothing to see, kind of like snorkelling in a pool.

We wanted to stay at the Royal Lahaina but it was booked the first night we wanted it so we decided to stay at the KOI for that one night. It is on the same property and is managed by the RL and allows you acces to the RH amenities. We knew the rooms wouldn't be as nice as the RH but we didn't know by how much. It is an old building. The carpets and walls look worn. The walls are thin so you can hear your neighbour. It is however on a beautiful stretch of beach and you get access to good amenities. If you are the type of person who doesn't care about the room but rather the location, this is a cheap way to on Kaanapali beach.

It is just a shame that the owners of this property have no regard for it. It is a disgrace to be in this condition in such a lovely area. Location is fabulous but the 'motel' is just pitiful. DH called it the 'bates motel'. Wish we had our $ back. No excuse for this property to not be on par with the surrounding hotels. Two stars is solely for the location. Motel is 40 years old and completely disappointing. Even had to get a refund for the $10 wifi fee because the signal is too weak! Spend a little more and get something decent. Also note, building is three stories and no elevator and walk from parking lot can be a trek.

Room Tip: go to another hotel

Warning pictures are nothing like the actual inn. Bathroom was falling apart there was no water pressure in the shower so it was useless to us. Bed was absolutely horrible you could feel the springs right through the mattress.this place needs to be condemned! On the good note we got the heck out of there the second night and upgraded to the royal lahaina resort....beautiful but much more expensive.
