Garden Gate Bed and Breakfast
Ranked #8 of 11 Lahaina B&B and Inns
Reviewed 22 June 2014

I'm going to start this review by saying that the game plan for my vacation with my wife was to save money on the flight and lodging to spend on activities. I would say that staying at Garden Gate allowed us to successfully accomplish our game plan. It offers basic accommodations in a popular area of the island. The following are strengths and opportunities.

Strengths:
It is a simple inn located in Lahaina, which is central to many of Maui's best beaches and activities. The breakfasts were simple continental meals with breads/pastries, hard boiled eggs, juice and yogurt - enough to get you on a good start to the day. The rooms with Ocean views do indeed have nice views. The Inn has beach towels and other beach gear (i.e. chairs/umbrellas) for you to borrow free of charge. Lastly, Jeri was very helpful with her suggestions on beaches and other activities like the luaus. Also, the hosts prepared breakfasts for us to take with us on our early morning excursions, which was really nice.

Opportunity Areas:
This is more of an Inn vs. other true B&B's my wife and I have stayed (see Marjorie's Inn Kauai). Rooms are basic (a bit dated) but comfortable and fairly clean. This is not the type of place where you will stay to be in the room all day. This is a nice "crash pad" to enable you to go on your way and enjoy the island's many activities.

There are a few other things that took Garden Gate down from a "very good" to "average" for us. The main host leaves after a certain hour, leaving her in-laws in charge. They are not as welcoming or as helpful as the main host. The little details are often unclear/missing (i.e. where to park when you arrive, where to put towels if you want them to be changed out in your room, how far in advance to request an early morning breakfast).

You will save money on the room, parking and breakfast vs. a resort. However, if you want more of a traditional B&B or resort-like experience, I would specifically seek that out elsewhere.

Room Tip: Stay in the island or ocean view room if you decide to stay here.

Upon arrival we were lucky enough to be upgraded to the "Ocean View" room (if it isn't booked I HIGHLY recommend it) and our experience at the Garden Gate B&B only improved from there.

One tip I would say is breakfast is not served on Sundays. Everyone definitely deserves a day off, we just weren't fully aware of that until we arrived.

The hosts and owners are incredibly helpful and approachable. They were willing to consider our desired itinerary when it came to the check - out time and proved to be extremely accommodating despite the fact that they were fully booked.

Overall we had a very peaceful and enjoyable stay here. For anyone looking to unwind within walking distance of the touristy areas...this is the perfect place!

Hawaiian music starts to play inviting guests to come grab a bite to eat. Steve is visiting with guests providing insightful information on best of Maui. Coco, a sweet little dog wonders around looking for hand outs and inviting pets. You settle into your chair and take in the quiet and cozy, lush green patio. You chat with lovely folks from all over the world, if you feel like chatting. After finishing your fresh fruit and Jerry's homemade banana bread, you grab your belongings and select your beach gear that the B & B graciously supplies. You pick out your beach chair, umbrella, snorkel gear and cooler. Steve is likely around in the yard wishing you a great day. On your way to the beach you discuss how great it would be to have Steve as a relative so you could be rest assured you would see him in the future.

We stayed in the Lanai room and think it was the best room of all at the B & B.

If we go back to Maui, hands down were staying here!

We stayed 2 nights at the Garden Gate Bed & Breakfast.
Steve and his dad were VERY accommodating.
Steve was a wealth of good information on good beaches to visit, places to eat, etc.
Nice continental breakfast with local fruits for breakfast.
They have beach items (towels, chairs, snorkel gear, Boggie boards, etc.) you can borrow to make your beach visits more enjoyable.
Definitely would stay there again.

My wife and I stayed at the Garden Gate for 5 days in April 2014. Both Steve and Jeri were wonderful hosts and the accommodation was excellent. Great location and Steve provided lots of local insight that made our first trip to Maui so memorable.

Thank You Steve and Jeri.

Garden gate is a few blocks from the coast of Maui in the charming port of Lahaina. From here we could easily travel to every part of the island. The house has many room selections..some with a view, all attached bath. The house is painted a cheerful tropical coral color. The breakfast was plentiful with fruits, yogurt, granola, eggs, and pastries or bagels. Of course coffee too. It was served in a lush private patio area away from the neighborhood. A great way to meet others staying as well.
Our hostess Jeri, was welcoming and helpful providing an early packed breakfast the day we drove the Road to Hana. She also provided a map and CD with instructions for a great experience. Also lots of parking, one spot for each room, and complimentary beach chairs and blog is board's. We would visit again.

Room Tip: Our standard room did not have much visit we knew that when we booked. Don't be afraid of the st...

My husband and I stayed with Steve and Jeri for 3 nights in November 2013. Our stay was lovely, despite the bad weather. Even Steve commented on how bad the weather was, and how unusual. Steve gave us wonderful recommendations for beaches, hikes and restaurants (check out Hanu-fabulous). We had the downstairs studio, with a private deck (couldn't use because of the rain) and a covered porch (thankfully!) as well as a huge apartment like room; full kitchen, huge bathroom, full sized living room, all of which was clean and well decorated. The breakfasts were wonderful, taking place outside on the covered lanai. The location is a bit odd-it's smack dab in the middle of a development and not within walking distance to town. But no biggie. We enjoyed our stay very much.

Room Tip: although it does not have an ocean view, the king suite on the first floor is huge with every amenit...
