“Great Place to Stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 April 2010

My wife and I spent 2 nights at the Aston and found it to be a great place to stay. We were well impressed with the friendly staff, nice layout, and great amenities the property had to offer. Very happy to recommend this property to anyone planning to stay on Maui!

After reading several reviews about this hotel months ago, my wife and our friends booked the Aston Kaanapali Shores. Overall, this is a decent hotel for a decent price.

Pulling up to the hotel, you get the feeling that this place will be a slice of heaven. Parts of it are, some not so much. Upon checking in, many of the staff seemed to be just going through the motions, barely looking up at you. The front desk is off to the side so you are really looking at some of the beautiful flowers and garden areas.

We were told that we were upgraded from a standard room to a studio. The only real difference is a small kitchen area with no lighting. The only light came from the range hood. If you were here with a family and looked to save a few dollars by eating in a little, this would be just fine. Our view was of a parking lot, a irrigation ditch and another property. The loud noises from trucks, and service people was a distraction.

The restaurant on site is nothing major to talk about. A bit overpriced in my opinion. As for the bar - I don't drink but my friends stated that the drinks were weak, overpriced and that the service was not friendly.

The oceanfront pool was nice and the view was great. The small beach was nice but the shoreline is very rocky. I would not recommend going out into the water from the beach. One nice thing is that you can walk along the beach down to other properties including Ka'anapali.

Other items about the hotel - Parking is a bit expensive but with in and out privileges, it's not that bad. The hotel is just a few minutes north of downtown Lahaina which makes dinner and shopping easy. I liked the fact that it is a Non-smoking property and didn't come across anyone smoking. There are shops on the property for almost anything you might want, from clothing to sundries. The free wi-fi is very spotty and can be a hassle at times. I think the idea of the weaker routers is that you should be enjoying the weather instead of being online.

Overall, if you are looking to sit by a nice pool and enjoy the sun, you are in the right place. If you are looking for great service and an amazing hotel experience you might want to look at Kaanapali or Wailea.

We were so sorry to learn of the impression our front desk team made on these visitors, as it is completely out of character for them. Quite often we receive very positive feedback regarding the "Aloha" they share with our arriving visitors.

Our studio units feature complete kitchens and are well lit. I'm puzzled by this "lighting" comment and will look into it further.

Our Beach Club restaurant is a favorite in the neighborhood, primarily because of great food and service, a beautiful view and prices that are lower than most other "resort" restaurants.

We hope to see these folks back again soon!

Aloha...

We stayed at the Kaanapali Shores over February break 2010. We were upgraded to the Aloha suite!! What an awesome room!! It had 2 bedrooms, 2 full baths, a full kitchen, a living room and a wrap around lanai!!

This is just an average place. The mattresses in all of our units were very uncomfortable; we had to buy foam pads to sleep on them.

We had to firmly request the allotted every-third-day cleaning and re-supplying of dishwashing detergent (no more laundry detergent allowed, no matter now long you stay - but hand soap works fine in washer). If we didn't remind them of the cleaning schedule, and insist, all the housekeeping staff would do was change the towels and sometimes sweep.

Contrary to the name and to what they tell you at booking, the Aston Kaanapali Shores IS NOT on Kaanapali Beach. You have to drive south to get to that beach.

There were no activities (except a mai-tai Wednesday - we don't drink and non-alcoholic drinks aren't free, so had to skip it) when we were there, so I'm not sure what other reviewers are referring to with references to lei-making, etc. Would have been fun.... Who doesn't love lei?

We were supposed to have a free upgrade, but that didn't happen. We were supposed to have an ocean view, but we weren't granted that, either.
The gardens are beautiful, however, so the view was lovely, regardless. There is waterfall, which is lovely and sounds peaceful; it's surrounded by brilliant flowers.

There is a lot of noise from delivery trucks very early in the mornings if you are facing the condo properties on either side of this Aston, so the middle section is best to avoid excess noise.

There is entirely too much smoking. All around the perimeter there will be clusters of smokers. There is no way to get to the beach without being assaulted by cigaretter smoke. A better system for the rabid smokers needs to be established and enforced.

Michael was great. He has detailed maps and lots of advice for sites to visit. He was the best asset the AKS has.
Some of the front desk staff were nice; some were not. (So, try again later if the first lady you speak with won't accomodate a simple request.)

The restaurant was so-so (both food and service) and rather expensive. Great views of the beautiful ocean, though.

The promised free in-room Wi-fi rarely worked. So beware. The pay-for-use Shaka net downstairs didn't work either. Staff refers you to an 800 number for both issues; no human ever answered.

The units were nice. Some were more updated than others. Basic kitchen equipment was provided.

Better, less rocky beaches are to be found elsewhere. This one has high surf and reefs, so it isn't ideal for kids.

The beach and mountains are beautiful. This is true no matter where you stay.
There are more brilliant shades of blue and green on Maui (and the rest of Hawaii) than we had ever seen.

You would want to have a car. The parking fees are annoying, as the condo owners already pay for that service. So renters are paying again.

You can opt out of the safe fee.

Expedia activities - shop around. Most things are available cheaper elsewhere.

Overall, I would guardedly recommend this property to friends, subject to notice of the above issues, if they could get it at a really good price. Otherwise, look farther south.

It's great to have the extra room a condo provides. Just do plenty of research to find the right one for you.

We appreciate the feedback provided by these visitors and wanted to clarify a couple of points.

Our housekeepers are assigned units automatically and have supervisors following up to ensure that proper service is delivered as scheduled. While these visitors may have decided to remind us of desired service, that service would have occurred anyway on a scheduled basis without a request/reminder. We supply our visitors with a starter kit that includes supplies like dishwasing and laundry soaps. Most find this supply adequate based upon the duration of their stays (in fact, often times we find leftover supply when guests depart).

The resort is located on north Kaanapali beach.

Like all other resorts, ours offers travel packages, some of which qualify for complimentary upgrades. If these folks didn't receive an upgrade, it is because the package they selected didn't include one. In the process of making travel plans, someone along the way may have misinformed them.

Ours is a non-smoking property. As a courtesy, we do have two designated smoking areas located away from the buildings. All beaches are public in Hawaii, so if people choose to smoke on them, while annoying to others at times, it is not against the law.

Our Beach Club restaurant continues to have a reputation for being one of the most enjoyable and affordable within the Kaanapali resort area. Our menu prices are below those of most resorts and the view, general ambiance, service levels and food quality are typically appreciated by all.

Finally, units are upgraded and beds replaced on a regular basis. While the comfort level of a bed is purely subjective, we were sorry to read of this guest's dissatisfaction with this one in particular and will look into it right away.

Mahalo.

Me, my to younger sisters, and parents went to Kaanapali for a week. It was so amazing, they redid the place with in two years and it is so modern and above average!! The two pools where the best pools in Maui, and the restaurant was great. The $9 parking was a little pricey, but other wise everything had a good price.

This was our first trip anywhere, basically, so I wasn't sure what I was expecting but what we got was terrific! Clean room, spactious and fully equipped. Hotel claimed it was on the beach and it was! Didn't spend much time in the room but we were well taken care of when we did! Would have preferred to be further down the shore, but once we got our bearings realized we weren't that far away from any attractions or restaurants we went to! Would recommend to anyone!

We stayed here for 9 nights in March 2010. The property is about 45 minutes from the airport. Once we arrived, we initially received probably the worst condo in the place, dark dingy and right off the parking lot. We were not happy and needless to say the night staff did not seem to concerned about it. In the morning we even thought about looking into moving to another place completely until we inquired at the font desk about an upgrade. They did have an ocean view unit available for a minimal upgrade price so we took it. We moved later that day and were very satisfied. The complex is large, very nice to have a restauarnat on the grounds that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food is ok, but not bad. We swam in both pools, the beach pool was heated and the garden pool was not. We did not use any of the amenities such as acitivities desk, etc but we did have great wait service at the beach side pool for lunch and drinks while laying around.

The rooms are ok, you have to ask for an updated unit and even though we did, the first place was clearly not updated, but our second condo was. The resort for the most part is quiet. The on site shops are nice and the grocery store across the street came in handy. Not too crazy about the $9 a night for parking but that seems pretty standard or the fact you had to pay to use the health club. The free high speed innternet was spotty. All in all a great place, we would return!!
