We traveled to Maui 25 years after our honeymoon with our teenage daughters, and wanted to make sure to get all the details right. Researched hotels and condos for about a month before booking the Kaanapali Alii. Could not have been a better choice for us. View from balcony was so beautiful, even I was speechless. From the moment we arrived at the front desk, to the time we checked out, we found the staff to be helpful and friendly, the facilities to be immaculately maintained, and even the weather was perfect! (Truth be told, we have pretty high expectations of things, and this property was amazing!) When we arrived, the front desk had accommodated all my requests in our condo. Our balcony looked over the pool and out to the ocean. The first night, after the time change, I was up at 3:30am, went out to the lanai and watched the millions of stars. There were a few lights still on around the pool-even in the middle of the night it was beautiful. They light the pool with blue lights, so you can see, but it does not detract from the view. Each evening they light tiki torches all along the beach so you can walk after dinner. There are 6 or 8 barbcue grills near the pool area for the residents to use. We picked up some burgers and grilled them, and onions and some pineapple (we bought at a roadside stand). The grills were VERY clean and used propane for a nice, fast and even heat. Our kitchen had grill tools, and at the pool area they had a big box with foil, paper plates, paper napkins, plastic silverware, cups, and they were able to bring us some ketchup and mustard packets. I think that was the best meal-grilling on the beach as the sun went down. The pool loans you towels, so we picked up 8 of them. When we snorkeled (Use Snorkel Bob's to rent gear) had a couple for the sand, a few to dry off, and one over the steering wheel to keep it from getting too hot. When we came back, just dropped off those towels and got new ones for the next day's adventure. (Make sure and do the zipline at Maui Tropical Plantation-safety is very important to them, and the zipline is over the beautiful plantation!) One smart thing I did, we packed up a cardboard box with breakfast cereal, our snorkel gear-only two of us needed to rent gear-snack foods, and sunscreen-checked it thru the airline just like a suitcase. Saved a ton of money over Maui prices for those items. Then went to the Safeway for blueberries, bananas and milk for breakfast, and bought sandwich stuff for our snorkel days. Snorkel Bob's rents softside coolers-make an ice pack by freezing a water bottle (drink some before freezing!). Note: if you are looking for a property just for sleeping, this is not for you. If you want to have a beautiful beach, couple pools, wonderful facilities (they loan you tennis rackets and balls for their courts-but we didn't have time), friendly and helpful staff, then you should stay here. The level of detail...they even have towels right at the entrance to the buildings that you can use to wipe the sand off your feet before going in, and have a number of elevators, so we never waited more than 1 minute or two for one. All the windows have screens, so you can let the island breeze in to almost any room. Just a wonderful property!
